One of the reasons that, during the last couple of years, I have retaken a keen interest in contemporary guitar-based music is that so many bands are ransacking the very early eighties for influences, riffs, production style, etc. It remains my favourite epoch, musically, though I suppose for most people what they enjoy when they are 16-18 remains their favourite. However, some classic LPs from that time don't get nearly enough mentions; which of the following LPs do you have (downloaded from Soulless)?
The Sound - eponymous debut
Comsat Angels - 'Waiting For A Miracle', 'Sleep No More' and 'Fiction'
Section 25 - 'Always Now'
Girls At Our Best - 'Pleasure'
Young Marble Giants - 'Colossal Youth'
If you haven't listened to them then I suggest you do.
Sadly I have none of those
I recently read Rip It Up by Simon Reynolds which is inspiring me to go out and buy more albums like that though.
I would also add The Cure's Seventeen Seconds to that list.
'Seventeen Seconds' is generally well-known.
i don't have the whole of colossal youth
but i've loved everything i've heard by young marble giants. i know next to nothing about the band but i really like the way they sound so quiet and restrained but really compelling
It's awonderful wonderful LP
And it has been a huge influence.
Also
'Life In The Gladhouse' single by Modern English
i have YMG's Salad Days
it is great. but who is currently ripping it off?
The Sound
From The Lions Mouth is a classic indeed.
You may want to add "Au Pairs - Playing With A Different Sex" to your list as well (I know you're a fan anyway).
For years I used to have copies of both on crappy C90 cassette, but I have recently invested in a mint vinyl copy of each. Comsat Angels is next on my list of potential LP investments.
The Comsat Angels' LPs have recently be reissued, with extra tracks.
I have one Comsat Angels
Never really get into The Sound or Young Marble Giants.
Can't remember girls at your best or section 25.
Girls At Our Best
I can't believe that you don't know 'Getting Nowhere Fast'
I might have listen to it
on tapes people made me...
This Heat - Deceit
