The absurdity of a band gorged in such anti-American zeal singing in such an affirmably faux American accent, is matched only by how much Chichester’s Hope Of The States seek to raise the bar. Aided by their sheer number and armed with Sigur Ros producer, Ken Thomas, the untimely death of guitarist, Jimmi Lawrence during mixing, immediately verified them, bringing The Lost Riots into the realms of Joy Division’s Closer for the pure tragic-factor. Giving credence to every lonely lyric, it’s needless to say that Lawrence’s war-torn guitar work creases dimensions with the weight of its emotion.

Tragedy aside, the record itself is no different to how it would be if Jimmi were still here. It remains a massively orchestrated kickback against self-pity. Rooted around guitars but brought to the fore with an otherworldly combination of strings and lush production, it’s a politically sensitive album that rests more alongside the studied observation of Radiohead than the reactionary impudence of Kinesis. It would perhaps like to be more of a true step forward musically - more of a Morricone-come-Godspeed evolution that truly brings post-rock to the charts than it is, however, despite countless moments where this becomes possible, they have a particular pop sensibility anchoring them down. The only spoiler is Sam Herlihy’s lack of vocal abilities.

For a band that centre so much around melody and their polemic, often quite beautiful lyricism, it’s a great shame that Herlihy’s fractured and wavering vocals often sound like a cross between Ian Brown and Embrace’s Danny McNamara. His warbling greatly detracts from the plush Mogwai style soundscapes that flirt between twinkling, bright marching beats and harrowing, forcefully decadent guitars. If you can get over this, then there’s a great album to behold around it, but those used to the pitch-perfectness of Muse or Sigur Ros may have difficulty.

The magical centrepiece is indubitably the pairing of singles ‘The Red, The White, The Black, The Blue’ and ‘Black Dollar Bills’. The former is a furious blast of classic British rock. Recalling the original gusto of ‘Design For Life’ and repainting it in combat green feedback, it’s a whirring indulgence of the mightiest proportions. ‘Black Dollar Bills’ is a burning, eternally dour epic that reveals the group’s full musical majesty. The searing contrast of bleak piano-led verses tearing into their full on; industrial funeral march chorus is magically tragic. Few bands have the power to move in such a beautiful fashion.

Although song-wise, the last quarter of the album trails off after the stonking, ‘Sadness On My Desk’, ultimately, the phantasms created even by their instrumental (opener, ‘The Black Amnesias’), put Hope of the States in a different league to most of their peers. The Lost Riots is unlikely to trouble Coldplay in the worldwide airplay stakes, but there’s no doubting that it’s a monumental effort.

What is surprising is that amid the jeers of ‘post-rock’ encircling from all breaches, The Smashing Pumpkins and their bloated poetic rock, seem to be overlooked as one of Hope of the States’ nearest contemporaries. It’s there in everything from the referencing to the dazzling density of orchestration. The Lost Riots though, is very much 'present'-rock. And with the bar now considerably raised, it's a record to look back on with more smiles than sadness. It’s a fine debut of which Jimmi would be fucking proud.

Hope of the States - Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Am I the only person on the planet who doesn't have a problem with the vocals?

Hope of the States - Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

I have no problem whatsoever with the vocals. Furthermore, I think they're central to the band. And this is my album of the year until the Futureheads record arrives. (I nearly said '...record drops' but I don't want to sound like Zane Lowe)

Hope of the States - Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

i think the vocals have some really great moments, and all in all i don't have a problem with them...having said that, their various instrumentals and instrumental b-sides are pretty much all really, really good.

is it strange how post-rock is becoming present-rock isnt it?

I have no problem with the vocals whatsoever....great record

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Great band...

But them wierd adverts promoting the album has put me off a bit...dont know why....but in the end..i might end up buying it this saturday....lol

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

I also am quite surprised by the complaints on his vocals, they work well

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

awesome, an arrowhead struck in the marrow of my bones, ice in my entrails, dripping with and submerged in the liqour of love. the whole thing just works.buy this and listen

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Good review, hard to disagree with a lot of points made. Totally agree with the vocals, on some of the songs it's pretty bad almost nail and blackboard material but at the same time it works well on some parts of other songs. When I saw them in Glasgow Sam came across as a moaning, moody little sh*t which has maybe clouded my view of him somewhat.

Decent album with some excellent songs 66 Sleepers to summer, George Washington and Nehemiah are excellent tracks.

Wouldn't go anywhere near saying it was an album of the year contender.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

I saw them at Glasgow as well and Sam was most definitely not a moaning little shit. Some idiot was heckling and I sure as hell would not have stayed on stage after being told to 'SHUT THE FUCK UP AND PLAY' and 'FUCK OFF'.

Great review though, informative and literary without being unreadable. Personally I don't see the Smashin gPumpkins there at all mind you.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Its irrelevant whether he is a "good" singer

Their music is sang sensitively, paranoid, sad and HOPEFUL

The vocal delivery completely matches their art/lyrical content and meaning.

Why should it be sang differently, he wrote the lyrics didn't he?

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Bought it, Bored by it, Took it back. The Vocals are a touch on the weak side, not always noticable, my main complaint is the lack of any tunes other than the two first singles. Still, I can see the appeal to others.

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Hopeful is the word i'd best use to describe this album.

I like his voice but it's the epic-like musical parts that are just so beautiful that give you such a rewarding feeling of Hope.

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

I agree, and I don't get what all this fuss is about with his voice, yes he doesn't have the greatest range or strength, but it fits the songs and is quite pleasant and gentle. Plus you can hear every word he sings.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

I feel a bit let down by this record. I understand all the tragedy, etc. that 'helped' birth it, but there aren't actually any tunes - and I don't mean that in a conventional sense. It sounds like an aged debut; overworked in parts and wholly lacking something yet over-dressed nonetheless...

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

the album was finished before the tragedy...

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

i like his voice. takes some getting used to and i can easily see why some people don't like it. but it's my favourite album in a long time. don't agree that it gets poor after sadness on my back - whichever song it is that goes "if you're happy in the world tonight..." is brilliant. can't remember what it's called. but it's possibly the best song on the album. oh wait! me ves y sufres is best. or is it black amnesias. or 66 sleepers to summer... i just don't know :(

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

yeh it's my fav album in a long time too, and that song is 'goodhorsehymn', i love it where it all cuts out and then storms back in again. loverly.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

as do i. i think it gives the music great texture...

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

afraid i dont see the appeal with this band whatsoever. I agree with the person above, they cant write songs for shit.

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

and i guess the foo fighters, nivarna, at the drive in, biffy clyro, idlewild are the pinnicle of amazing songwritting.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

Okay I haven't heard the album, but I really don't like the singles. The Red, White, The Black, Blue has droning guitars and whining vocals and yet they are seen as this great, wonderful band because they over-reach themselves. Completely overrated. It's just too steeped in production for the actual soul of the record to come out.

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

It is a good record in places, Black Dollar Bills is a clever song, and Enemies Friends is pure pop. Sometimes the stuff gets a little overdone, and sometimes his voice just doesn't quite fit.

Re: Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

At first I thought it was overrated but all of us who think this is because we are comparing them to much, understand them standing alone.

You need to listen to the whole album to understand where they are coming from. Watch the videos to the singles, read all the lyrics, repeat listening to the album.

If you like epic rock like radiohead, coldplay, sigur ros you shouldn't have a problem in loving this album.

There is definitely a soul in this record.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

I've got no problem with the vocals, the album doesn't "trail off " at all and HOTS have to be some of the best song writers around in my opinion. They deserver all the hyp they get.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

I think it's pretty weak. They never topped 'Black Dollar Bills' and 'The Red The White...' is utterly horrid. Not bad, just disappointing and not as good as Mew.

The Music bang stuff; make 'epic' soundtrack

if you don't like it don't listen to it, and what is this nonsence about 'no tunes'? every other song is a tune, you retards. all the positive posts are spot on though..i think we've covered how stupid the criticim of his voice is: its rock music not pop idol. lost riots is post rock climbactic brilliance with pop tunes sweetening the mix. i don't know how you couldn't like it. oh well, off to another indie clique i go..

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

How the fuck did these guys manage to secure a record deal?!
Did the anonymous frontman save the life of Sony's Managing Director?
It would be all to easy for me to slag off the 'singers' total unability to live up to his role, but I'll do it anyway:

THE LITTLE BASTARD CAN'T SING!

And the arrangements are abysmal; The same structure in every song, the same dull use of piling on the orchestration to fill in the gaping holes in the music.
Where's the inventiveness?
Where's the innovation?
Where's my receipt?

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots

this record is gorgeous. you can just get lost in the music especially on opener the black amensias. plus the red, the white, the blue and the black rocks like a motherf****r. i won a rare CD of HOTS b-sides from NME last week - turns out theyre good for something after all...
