Wading through a sea of distortion comes one of the finer alt.metalheads of this generation. Amplifier take the classic rock mantra and feed it through reams of electronics until it reaches the thunderous realms of a rhythm section so massive only this waterway could envelop it sufficiently. This début album will wrap its vast wings around your ears and you will suffocate.
This has the mark of Chris Sheldon all over it. Previously twiddling the knobs for other space-rockers such as My Vitriol and Oceansize, Amplifier have brought Sheldon to the fore once more and have utilised his qualities revealing the cosmic possibilities for their colossal sound. Often a first release lets down a band so renowned on the quality of their live show. Here, this is not the case and Amplifier seem to be set up for a big future.

Re: Amplifier - Amplifier
And yet, I have seen nothing but raving hyperbolic praise for this band - has a certain record company been pulling in a few favours from the music press by any chance?
My main motivation for getting the CD was the band's association with Oceansize (who I rate highly) and maybe a love of stupid amounts of FX and progressive music. Yet all this means nothing in the absence of good songs. Does nobody else see this?
Re: Amplifier - Amplifier
"Raz, if you give Amplifier a grand review we'll give you unlimited InMe and Bowling for Soup gear"
I said...
"WOWZERS!! SURE THING!!!"
and that
was that
the thing about good songs, as any Tool fan should know, is that it takes more than 5 or 6 listens
no?
Re: Amplifier - Amplifier
As a major fan of Tool and a range of prog/post rock music, I believe that the best music, in particular, complex and obscure music requires the listen repeatedly.
However, Amplifier's music is not particularly complex or abstract. It takes elements of Tool, QRyche, Dredg, classic rock and muchos FX and tries to mould these influences into gargantuan stadium rock anthems.
If such songs do not start hitting any catchy sensors by 5 or 6 listens then something is missing. Or am I missing something?

1) Motorhead
2) The Consultancy
3) Airborne
4) Panzer
5) Post Acid Youth
6) Old Movies
7) Glory Electricity (B side of The Consultancy CD single)
8) On/Off
9) Neon (album version but from The Consultancy single)

Personal opinion of course, but I reckon that improves the dynamics of the album a hell of a lot!

I have to admit to being very very disappointed. As Surfpunk said, it's extremely flat.
A real shame as I expected great things.
I'm hoping it'll be a grower but I think I'm at the stage now where I know how much I'll end up liking an album from the initial listen. I can't see this ever elevating itself above the disappointing tag.
