Various: How Soon Is Now?
You're a fan of The Smiths: Mozza is God, right? Anyone attempting to emulate his genius is obviously a fool out of their depth, right? Your argument holds some water - the likes of The Beautiful Mistake, My Awesome Compilation and Instruction really don't add anything to the original versions of the songs they've chosen to cover: 'Cemetary Gates', 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' and 'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me' respectively. Then again they're hardly terrible, but from your perspective, these tracks are awful. Don't, however, overlook this album completely, or else you'll miss out on thoroughly decent interpretations of 'Panic' and 'Frankly, Mr Shankly' by Garrison and Cursive. And you wouldn't want to do that, really; Tim Kasher's trembling voice is perfectly suited to the words of Moz'.
You're a fan of punk and hardcore: Ignore what's written above; you'll admire all these bands' attempts. Standouts are obvious: Million Dead's 'Girlfriend In A Coma' is a fuzz-filled delight that would enrage Mr Smiths above, but should thrill you. Hundred Reasons have a stab at that intro ('How Soon Is Now?') and succeed; it's just a shame that Colin Doran deadpans the rest of it to death. Read Yellow also bring the noise with a storming 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'.
You're a total newcomer to these bands and The Smiths: What are you doing even reading this? Sorry... I guess that you'll either find a handful of bands worth further investigation (I'd lump for Read Yellow, the now rather defunct Garrison and Cursive, personally), or dash out and pick up The Smiths' greatest hits in the HMV sale. Whichever you choose, this record will have served a purpose; whether you'll ever return to it is another matter entirely.
A good record then, but one that's not sure of its own audience.

Various - How Soon Is Now?
That was a very nicely structured article. 9/10 for structure. Well done! -
Various - How Soon Is Now?
the teletext review for this cd was hilarious, saying they all had missed the point, covering these smiths songs, and they should be hung on the cemetery gates!hehe -
Various - How Soon Is Now?
Or Michael hows abouts..."You have no need to pidgeonhole yourself as a fan of indie only and have a broad enough musical taste to like BOTH styles and recognise that the entire reason a load of hardcore type bands are covering The Smiths is because they had a profound effect on the music they make"
Why youd give the thumbs up to Read Yellow is a total mystery to me however youa re spot on with Cursive. Wonderful version..-
Re: Various - How Soon Is Now?
Round of applause to you, Sir *manic clapping*
thehardcoreandthegentle bangs the nail on the head; good review BUT unnecessary pidgeonholing. Nice idea, but doesn't quite work....
Btw, Read Yellow aren't that bad. Their album is very hotchpotch and their Smiths cover version isn't..erm..great, but I can think of far worse bands.

Various - How Soon Is Now?
Why is it when emo bands cover the Smiths, there's always a kind of....loss of humour and life. There's something about this album that just seems...kind of to miss the point. I guess being a Smiths fan rather than into emo/hardcore I'm not possibly most likely to get it. But The Smiths aren't 'untouchable'. No band is. But...where's the soul? -
Various - How Soon Is Now?
This album made me angry! I really like the smiths, and a lot of the bands that are on this album, but I was left dissapointed, really dissapointed. It just doesn't quite work. Million Dead are a good example. I like Million Dead, but they absolutly ruined Girlfrind in a Coma, but in their favour, they did do it in their own style and if it wasn't for the lyrics could have been a totaly different song. Wheras Hundred Reasons tried to emulate How Soon Is Now and play it EXACTLY as the Smiths did. Whcih made me ask, "What's the point?"
Firstly, it will never be as good and secondly why is it needed? We already have the original. My Awesome Compilation played "There Is A Light..." well, but just sound like a young pub covers band. If anything, just download the Garison, WalterWalter (with an exellent Cure reference at the end to listen out for) and The Beautiful Mistake tracks and you have the best parts of this pointless album.
My Awsome Compilation? More like One Awful Complilation.
I'm taking it back and getting the new Cure album! -
Various - How Soon Is Now?
isnt anyone else sick of shaven headed emo kids pretending that they have always loved the smiths, despite the fact that their bands have clearly just aknowleged Morrisey as the legend he is. Next Frank Black will be hailed as a lyrical god, despite the fact that the breeders far outweighed the Catholics. A fad is a fad, let it lie. -
Various - How Soon Is Now?
These bands may not 'get' The Smiths, but I really don't 'get' these bands.
Seriously now, does anyone over the age of 16 actually like it? The only people I know who listen to "emo" are the younger siblings of those people who were Linkin fucking Park fans 3 years ago. It's soulless, derivative pop music: pop for the mainstream outsider, with the skate shoes and the band's hoody and the ultra baggy jeans and the wooden fucking choker and the sodding hair gel.
How Morrissey inspired them I'll never know, it's like how Marx "inspired" Pol Pot.-
Re: Various - How Soon Is Now?
What are you calling "emo" though? If you're talking about what is being called emo these days, (Holiday Plan, My Awesome Compliation, Hell Is For Heros...pretty much any band that came out in the last two years) then yeah, it's for kids. And is not "emo". Emo goes back to the mid-late eighties with bands like Rites of Spring and Husker Du, who influenced bands like Quicksand and Far, who in turn either influenced bands (Thursday, Movielife, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday) or actually stemmed from these bands (Glassjaw, Rival Schools). Incedently, this all was pretty much based in the New York and Washington areas. And the considered themselves melodic, emotional or post-hardcore. Emo was (and still is) considered an insult to any proper post hardcore band. Incedently none of those bands have studded belts, black slick side partings or come from Leicster! What is being called "emo" these days has fuck all to do with that. It's just pop-punk with solos and screaming...revolutionary!-
