The Libertines: The Libertines
It’s been a year since Don’t Look Back Into The Sun, the iconic last release from The Libertines proper, but of course they do have an excuse. Singer/guitarist Pete Doherty’s much catalogued drug abuse has led him all over the world, from London to Paris and Thailand and back again, trying to get clean. Oddly enough, with all his troubles he did manage to release two singles (one, the aching ballad For Lovers was incredibly good; the other, a self-titled EP with his side project Babyshambles was not so good). The rest of the band, however, took some much needed time off and recorded this album with Doherty earlier in the year. With former Clash guitarist Mick Jones at the producer’s helm once again, can the album live up to the promise of their first album, or is The Libertines going to be their Cut The Crap?
Initial signs look pleasing – opener and first single Can’t Stand Me Now is an obviously self-referential ode to the faltering relationship between Doherty and fellow front man Carl Barât. Over some of the finest Jam impressions since Weller and co hung up their suits all those years ago, the volatile pair sing to each other their own personal problems, while the harmonica-led outro… well… you’ll either love it or hate it. Last Post On The Bugle (originally mooted as the album’s first single) follows suit – pounding drums (courtesy of Gary Powell, an oft-overlooked talent) and a chiming 3-note riff compete with Pete’s innocent plea – “I got carried away”. Too true.
The Sixties seem to play a great influence on this album, both for the better and the worse: What Katie Did, a fan favourite since it first turned up as a demo on the band’s Babyshambles demos site, is great. Carl’s vocals give the track some welly, while the “Shoop de lang-a-lang” backing vocals add to the charm. Meanwhile, the Barât-led Narcissist sounds like Chas and Dave on amphetamines. Conversely, Don’t Be Shy is one of the worst things the band has committed to tape. Doherty wails, completely out of tune, over some loose funk that sounds like a bad Beatles b-side.
Thankfully, the good moments are here in abundance, and the album’s highlights come in quick succession. The Man Who Would Be King starts off with a bit of self-plagiarism, stealing their own intro from Tell The King, before spinning it into words of advice for any newcomers to their already growing scene. “I’ve been told if you want to make it in this game, you’ve gotta have the luck, you’ve gotta have the look”, Pete croons over a prodding bass-line and a crescendo of guitars, until everything stops, leaving Doherty sneering a nonchalant “la la la la la la” until the band come crashing back in. It’s totally invigorating stuff, guaranteed to send shivers up, down, left and right of your spine, and shows a much more mature side to The Libertines. Meanwhile, Music When The Lights Go Out, a track dating back to about 2000, is almost folky, coming on like a modern Kinks, until about halfway through when everything gets cranked up to 10 only to disappear again.
This being The Libertines, you know there are going to be some high octane punk rockers as well, and there are certainly a couple here that you can go fucking mental to. Arbeit Macht Frei is a one-minute thrash, in which Barât and Doherty seem to shout the first things that come into their head. Something tells me drugs may have been involved. Meanwhile, The Saga is unquestionably one of the finest tracks on here; stop start rhythms clash with trebly guitars, while Pete tells us that “I ain’t got a problem… it’s you with the problem”. And they say the 12-step program doesn’t work?
The album ends in a fit of complete and utter joy. What Became Of The Likely Lads is one of the album’s more straightforward punk tracks, and doesn’t suffer for it. Another track about the frontmen’s faltering relationship (“What became of the dreams we had?”), as well as looking to the future, albeit pessimistically, Likely Lads is a brilliant way to end a brilliant album. While the future looks uncertain for the band (Barât is leading the rest of the band without Pete for the time being), if this is to be their final album, and some say it will be, it’s the end of a beautiful career.
“What became of forever?” There are only four people on the planet who can tell us the answer. The legacy continues…

The Libertines - The Libertines
Gotta say, I really think this review is a little pedestrian. It lacks imagination, articulation and inspiration. It's more like a journalism by numbers tabloid music section review than a DiS one.
I really don't like criticising DiS reviewers/writers. Mainly because they're so often sensitive souls who get enough messageboard flames from an abundance of irate journo wannabees who're sure they could do better. I just felt I had to make light of this particular review cos it ain't up to scratch.
Ne'er mind though, sure your next 'un'll be better
-
The Libertines - The Libertines
'cause it is, he's only 15, bless.
-
The Libertines - The Libertines
what the review fails miserably to convey is:
the album is shit. really shit.
bless 'em.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
While I usually like to reserve judgement until I've heard an album, on the strength of their first CD and hearing some of these songs live, I can only agree.
I really fail to see the appeal of the band - least of all self-made tragedy Pete Doherty. Reading yesterday's piece on his addiction in the Sunday papers made me pity the lad for all the wrong reasons.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
i actually really like the band, watching them live is usually very entertaining and while the first album isn't exactly classic, it's not bad either.
this one is, unfortunately. i'm holding onto the hope that the version i've got isn't finished, but judging by the 'production' on the first one, i'm not holding my breath for an improvement!

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
i'm prepared to forgive you for that comment, because you like carter usm.-

It'll grow on me anyway, things always do. I don't want to not like it, really.

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
"one, the aching ballad For Lovers was incredibly good; the other, a self-titled EP with his side project Babyshambles was not so good)"
That's no excuse, a 5 year old know's better than to overuse the word 'good'!
Don't patronise the fella, their are other DiS writers in their teens that can do better reviews, age isn't the deciding factor, talent is. And on the basis of this review alone, the writer ain't up to scratch.
Sure he'll prove me wrong next time though...

The Libertines - The Libertines
When was the last DiS really slagged someone off? Everything seems to be getting 4+ these days-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
This isn't Q, where every journalist is given a load of albums and told to get on with it. So (in the most part) people write about what enthuses them. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
How can a 15 year old have heard enough music to intelligently review anything.
Regardless of whether he can write or not.
This album is not 4.5/5. It's a 2 or a 3.
-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
>How can a 15 year old have heard enough music to intelligently review anything.
How can a 17 year old win a Grand Slam tennis tournament?
Don't be patronising.-

what does age matter people? He's giving his review which is a 4.5. If you think it's only worthy of a 2 or 3 then keep that nice little thaught to yourself. (I'm sure the person to post the next comment will pick up on the fact that I'm only 16 and can't possibly know anything about music)-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Since when do you have to have listened to a certain amount of music before you can be deemed worthy enough to write reviews?
Do you have to own a copy of Chas and Dave's greatest hits, supplemented by a warehouse full of Latvian techno records released circa 93-95?
At the end of the day, a review is someone's opinion on whether they like or dislike a record.
It is not a brief history of popular music.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
You're only 16 and can't possibly know anything about music.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
age doesn't mean a lot surely.
mr harrison was 15 when he went to hamburg.
age brings cynicism to those who cant take it.
the fact you're on this site means you like (reasonably) good music no?
why are you not interested in the Libertines?
have YOU written a song as good as what a waster?
thought not. lol -

I thought the album is run of the mill, with a few songs that catch your attention along the way. It's probably a grower, so i wont say its shit.
'Music When The Lights Go Out' is a good un tho, i enjoyed that one. -

when you say the album is poor, how is it poor? compartivily to their first or compared to "london calling". hate it when people say, just shit. pointless. and the review wasnt that bad - if you were paying a sub of £40 p/year then yeah moan - but dont blast the kid for trying, specially as you aint parting with ur student loan.
and age does mean a lot. "experience" is subjective, just 'cause you're 22 don't mean you're any more intellectual or emotionally aware of whatever than a 32 year old that still lives at home with his mum. age means shit. rooney vs henry/sharpova vs william (s)/howard vs blair.-

I'm 31 and think Dire Straits should be featured more on DiS. And Cliff Richard.

I dunno, it's probably me but if i read a review i like it to access a broad musical knowledge and place the analysis within that context.
Like anybody can review the new Basement Jaxx record for instance. But it would be great if they reviewed it and referenced Disco (salsoul), early house and hybridised ethinic culture as well as telling us what they thought. -

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
You're right in a sense. The review wasn't that bad, it just wasn't up to the usual DiS standard.
Personally speaking I come on here for the truly great writing as much as for the music news (people like Matthew Gregory, Nadine McBay and Andrew Future are eloquence personified, to name but a few). IMHO, this review is barely sixth form standard, it doesn't come anywhere near to the lofty heights of DiS writing.
Yes, none of us pay subscription fees, but when this site allegedly gets "thousands" of responses to its call for new writers, you expect them to pick the creme of the crop, not the run of the mill (I say this based on this review alone, I await an astounding follow up from the same reviewer to prove me wrong).-
The Libertines - The Libertines
15 year old kids shouldn't be reviewing music then should be out getting drunk, fucking strangers and learning how to play the guitar.

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
i wish i started writing when i was 15. have you seen almost famous? i wish i was that guy at 15.
i say good luck to him.

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
and i don't even like the libertines, or consequently this album. it sounds stupid when the only legacy someone has - the only stab they have at an ego - is the fact that they're older than someone. ageism in music never got anyone anywhere - beethoven was making music at 3 or something. -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines

The Libertines - The Libertines
I think people are trying to point out that the review isn't written as gracefully because of the lads age. Though many generalisation's are annoying, it would be naive to ignore this one. Its common knowledge that you learn more as you grow older and writing is definately a skill that takes time. It has to be a pretty small perecentage of youngsters being better writers than adults...
Personally, he did a better job than i could and i do wish to hear the new Libertines album...not really as a result of reading this unfortunately. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
I'm really looking forward to this album. Rock'n'roll legends already!
Oh and I can't see what's wrong with this review. There's quite alot of writing on DIS that isn't quite upto scratch, but surely that's not the point. Surely the point is that it's real music fans writing with passion and conviction.
I was really surprised to learn the writer was only 15. Good luck to him! -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines

wizzy alex lad - we look forward to your review of the new shazny lewis lp.....

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Ah, now I see where you're coming from - bitter that your DiS application was turned down.
When did this become a 'review my review' site?
Leave off, bully.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
who are you talking too?
-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
I assume you're talking to me, being as though I mentioned the 'call for new writers' thingimajig.
Yes, I hold me hands up, I did apply- no surprises there.
Yes, I never got a reply (not strictly getting turned down, but as good as). That was because- I'll fully admit- my application was run of the mill (much like this review), had a factual innacuracy or three in it and just generally wasn't very good. I just wasn't worthy of a place on their staff.
I'm big enough to admit that I'm sure there were oodles of better music journos than me that applied (despite the fact I have I have a 1st class degree in journalism- god, aren't I arrogant to drop that one in? Yes). Heck, maybe 'Alex the kid' is one of them. But the fact still remains that this review was mediocrely average, and doesn't adhere to DiS usual high standards.
It's not 'reviewing a review', it's called having an opinion. Something most of our grandparents fought for.
And I fail to see how your use of the term 'bully' applies, I have been polite throughout.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
I refer to the AMOUNT of times you've felt the need to state this opinion.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Yes, you're entirely right. I have reiterated the same opinion more times than neccessary. I apologise profusely.
Although I still don't think that's bullying. I'm hardly calling the writer 'snot face' and pulling their hair, am I?
-
-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
he's rightly actually. my follow-up post was full of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes - yet no pisstake was made!! seen a million peeps on this board big up one another's reviews - so why not be negative too. it's fair enough - as long as it's not every single post eh!
really cannot wait to hear the new LIBS album. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
I think age does play a massive factor on your opinion, I certainly don't like the same bands I liked when I was 15. However, I might not like the same bands I do now when I'm 50, so is there ever a stage when your listening taste stops evolving?
That said, how anyone can listen to this album and give it anything about 2 stars must be mad. I was a loyal supporter of the libertines for a long time, but this is truly sh*t. Terrible production didn't effect the first album because the songs were still there, but it really sounds as if they couldn't give a flying f*ck about anything on this one. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
I really used to like this website.
It's become full of dreadful pretentious wankers.
I won't be coming back.
Tally-Ho.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
..nothing like a little constructive criticism to spur on a young man to write about his love of music is there?!
fucking pricks

The Libertines - The Libertines
I'd just like to see the actual author defend himself a bit here. Anyway I think that one of the better writers (calling Michael Diver or Adie) should maybe have written this review.
And the bloke who said he had a 1st class in journalism: if you got a 1st class in journalism, and you're not good enough to write for DiS, what does that say about you? That you're an arrogant little twat, to pardon my German.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
I bet most of you guys have written some fairly crap reviews in your time as we all have. I would also guess you were all 15 at some stage and I'm sure you all loved getting slagged off in public, (before internet) not. Did it really help you? no. This is a decent review and the first I've read on the new libs album. I can't wait to hear it.
The Libs are awesome live, have produced some cracking tracks and could go on to produce some trully great music. So lets all hope Pete sorts his sorry ass out and gets back on track.
Al keep up the good work.
Oh yeah, a very high proportion of successful journalists don't have a degree in the subject so Jared...DO ONE!
You obviously didn't have enough fun at uni if you got a first.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
When I wrote here at around the same age I would have loved to have got that kind of criticism rather than being told to fuck off.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
i agree.
So this Jared has a first degree, eh? Big fucking deal!
He comes across as a tad bitter. And he has, dare i say, made himself look a bit silly.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Guilty as charged m'lord ;) -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Nah, I'm not bitter fella. I like the site and would have liked to have written for it, but then some things aren't meant to be. Obla dee obla dah, n' all that jazz...

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
"Oh yeah, a very high proportion of successful journalists don't have a degree in the subject"
That was exactly my point. Most truly great journalists don't have degrees in the subject. I do and I'm not a journalist and probably couldn't hack it if I was (hack! geddit? Puntastic eh? No- that's why I'm not gun enuff to be a journo!).
There's some fantastic writing on this site that constantly leaves me awestruck, but I still think my original point about this particular review is right.
Oh, by the way. I had plenty of fun at uni and have the lice and warts to prove it.
(I know, crap joke. I'll 'do one' now....)-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
that last comment was probably the most astute i've ever read on this website.
less of the ageism. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
Hahaha this is so harsh. The fact of the matter is this: the review wouldnt have been put on the DiS site if it was illegible, didnt read well or didnt successfully convey the writers' opinion. Whether you agree, disagree or feel you have the right to make cutting remarks whilst waving your second rate degree as a form of argument, the fact is that The Libertines are unmistakably one of the most talked about bands on here - the Ed wouldnt have let any old shit review slip through the net.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
The fact is that The Libertines are utter cack, really one of the worst British bands ever. I've come across more talent at White Hart Lane.
Merely TALKING about them this much is embarrasing...-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
How the fuck did this post appear here?
This site is tripping it's face off....

The Libertines - The Libertines
Considering the amount of drugs he's taken and his apparent "genius", you'd think Pete Libertine would have progressed beyond writing wanky three chord pub rock songs. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
shit. i actually like the new single.
*seriously fucking fearing for my sanity right now* -
The Libertines - The Libertines
I've read worse reviews, and heard shittier albums.
How old was Julie Burchill when she started writing for NME?
"The man who would be king" is pretty corking though, right? -

Well said! :) -
The Libertines - The Libertines
I've had the new album on non-stop for about a week
& it's most definitely not getting old anytime soon
Likewise with Up the Bracket! -
The Libertines - The Libertines
The writing is only half the deal. You also need to be grown up enough to read with intelligence. I got a lot from the review. I now know for definite that I do not need to listen to the album. It will be atrocious bollocks that any dysfunctional local band could top in an afternoon of twiddling. Thanks to Alex. Job done. -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
well, thats the issue. theyre saying that its proof that the editorial angle isnt as strong as usual, taking the writing as evidence, whilst youre saying to ignore the writing and believe blindly in the editor, like an oasis fan deciding taht because they once had some quality control, thats actual *proof* that their recent shit is actually gold.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
If someone thinks a band is utter cack, why do they post oh-so much on said band?
Please don't try to force your opinions on other people.
Also, many people are saying the album's shit or they're picking it up soon...Is it just me, or am I confused with an end of August release? -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
you dont have to be a libertines fan to see that the above review isnt particularly badly written, even if the songs are shit, and certainly isnt worthy of being pulled apart by some guy who thinks he could do better and didnt actually mention the editing at any point. like i said before, if it was as big a pile of toss as he was trying to make out, it wouldnt have got onto the site so one of two things has happened: as you say, the editorial angle has weakened or judging by the amount of positive comments it's received, the review is not shit.
-
-
-
The Libertines - The Libertines
"Please don't try to force your opinions on other people." force force force ... can you feel it yet? no. we're all just writing. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
I think people should lay off of little Alex.
I imagine that the reason he has written such a dire review is because he is a typical Libertines fan, so therefore possesses very little in the way of brains. We should pity him.

“Have we enough to keep it together?”
Humans are remarkable optimists. God knows why.
There’s a line near the end of Annie Hall where Woody Allen watches the rehearsal for a play based on his own collapsed relationship. At the end, he admits; “you're always trying to get things to come out perfect in art because it's real difficult in life.” That statement never seemed truer than with The Libertines.
For the past year you’ve been chasing an ambulance. Pete Doherty’s demise is reported with gruesome, stained-syringe precision; music critics turn philosophers theorising over rock ‘n roll’s descent into self-destruction; a new band’s coverage gets cut in order to cover (mis)quotes from Doherty/Barat giving hope/despair that the band will survive/split. The world rolls over and yawns...
So why have so many of us been willing to watch this miserable affair unfold for so long? In the faint, feeble hope that out of the ashes of their sanity, from the ruins of their relationship, these two scrawny songsmiths could fashion something remarkable. Something that could tower above the break-ins and break-ups, the tabloid tales and the heroin hits. Something that could stand as a perfect artistic testament to a damaged, derailed and fucked-up life. It’s like a kid on a council estate praying she gets a pony for Christmas.
From the very start, The Libertines is the sound of the band at its most muzzled; paralysed by poor production, underdeveloped songs and private lives that have become more sensational and noteworthy than the music. With guitar lines that don’t seem to know what to do with themselves, What Katie Did is a dawdled mid-tempo affair that never raises itself above sounding like a lost session track; Don’t Be Shy decides after about two minutes that it doesn’t want to be a pop song anymore and trails off into some kind of sub-Stone Roses jam session that they just don’t have the musical competence to pull off; and if they thought that speeding up the bass-heavy, tin-pan chords towards the end of Campaign of Hate would’ve added an ounce of energy to a tune that was dead on arrival, then they’re seriously deluded.
Which raises questions as to what exactly The Clash’s Mick Jones did to this record. If his aim was to fashion the album into the same kind of masterpiece of passion and melody as London Calling, then he has failed - the album is as poorly-recorded, as shabby and hollow-sounding as a set of demos. And if his aim was to reign-in Doherty’s attention-deficit songwriting and set the bar as high as the finest moments on their debut, then he has failed again - tracks such as Tomblands, The Saga and Arbeit Macht Frei showcase all the band’s vein-burstingly brilliant energy, but are no-where near the perfectly-formed anthems found in the likes of Time For Heroes and Boys In The Band.
Still, we have to make some concessions. While Can’t Stand Me Now would’ve merely sounded okay on the last record, here it shines as one of the few admirable moments, and Music When The Lights Go Out begins as a bruised acoustic strum that rocks the same tender lilt that sounded so touching on Wolfman’s For Lovers. Then finally, after thirty-five minutes of painful misfires, comes a shot of brilliance. On the closing What Became Of The Likely Lads, melodies drop off Barat & Doherty’s tongues like diamonds that have fallen off the back of a truck, complete with a breakneck backing that features the same soul, fire, romance and nostalgia they always promised us.
This review started from the belief that The Libertines should be an exceptional, era-defining rock ‘n roll band. Some will say they never were. Some will say they still are. But the excitement that exploded around them was because many people saw a goose-pimpling promise that they’d only just started to fulfil. But while it’s still too early to start writing the band’s obituary, we have to face the even more uncomfortable truth that the group may be nothing more than another band of false messiahs. A band that grew out of the hype they helped feed; that gave you glimpses of greatness, but never anything substantial to hold onto; that self-mythologized The Albion as though they sailed some spiritual graceland, and even more deceptively, that they were gonna take you with them.
“What became of the likely lads? We’ll never know.” As imperfect in art as they are in life, The Libertines have set their own detonator. And the fuse is rapidly running out.

The Libertines - The Libertines
very well written, but didn't DiS already review the album?-
The Libertines - The Libertines
With so many heroically talented artists lying unattended in small towns all over Britian, why even pause for the seconds it take to write this message to worry over the possibility that some dysfuntional half-arsed wannabes might one day make good? DiS has already gone the way of NME, distracted by its own "success" and unconsciously acting to exactly the same agenda as the Sun. It's bollocks. I wll not visit the site again.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
*confused*
Didn't you already write this review? And I swear there were a splurge of comments here as well (i.e "Libertines rock, how dare you give them 2 stars" and "yes, the Libertines suck lemons").
Oh well. If you actually care, I heard this album last week and it's DREADFUL. Really, really bad; so bad that they shouldn't have actually bothered with it. Nothing redeeming to say about it whatsoever, I'm afraid. And Pete's voice is a whimpering mess. In fact, Pete IS a mess and doesn't get even a shred of sympathy from me.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
we already submitted this review a few weeks back and it sparked a massive wave of debate. yet we go away to reading and someones taking it down and put it up again, removing all the comments.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
without some coverage of the more mainstream acts dis would just be a site about those heroic talents you speak of, read by a handful of people. with balance and compromise, we can divert folks from one agenda to another. nothing ever happens overnight. you can't blindly be intolerant without being ignorant and only covering half the picture. all or nothing? -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
i posted this on the last reviews so again: cant stand me now is supposed to be one of highlights of this album, thus I certainly will not buy it or even waste my time downloading it as that song is crap. -

I think they did it the other way round.

If you take a moment to look to the left, at previous libertines articles, you'll see we've reviewed it twice, once by a fan, once more above. dis is written by individuals, not by some singular homogenised point of view. this is a rudderless sea of ships, with the same flag, intended to reflect those who read the site/buy records/goto gigs... rather than imposing some arogant monolithic shadow from atop a haggered old horse.
this site is nearly 4years old and people STILL don't get it. i hope i'm making myself clear.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
by "left" i actually meant right. sorry.
-
-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Maybe they gave it a lower score because it really is a boring second album which is like a down market version of an excellent first.
Something like Winning Days to Highly Evolved (although Highly Evolved wasn't really up to much...)
-
-
The Libertines - The Libertines
So what's the point of having multiple reviews if they contradict each other? Doesn't that eradicate the whole meaning of the site?-
The Libertines - The Libertines
"So what's the point of having multiple reviews if they contradict each other? Doesn't that eradicate the whole meaning of the site?"
In what way? Unless you are looking for someone to TELL you what you think about an album...
You obviously get to trust some reviewers opinions more than others (due to them sharing a more similar taste in music to yourself), so surely multiple reviews can only be helpful?! -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
It justifies the whole meaning of the site.
We ain't gonna make a habit of it.
But when a records seriously overhyped its surely a bit justified?-
The Libertines - The Libertines
i heard this album on friday night on a coach with nothing else to distract me and it is utter cack. if it didn't say the libertines on the tin it wouldn't even be released.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
"paralysed by poor production, underdeveloped songs "
Is not the problem with most music today is the fact that it is over produced?-
The Libertines - The Libertines
To be honest, I have a feeling that the second review is not because the album is over-hyped, but just another trend in critics to build them up and knock them down, and it's never been more evident than with the libertines.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
Got the album today. My opinion? It's better than this article reckons, and not as good as the NME thinks. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
Is that the front cover?
Pathetic-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Not really. You can't keep reviewing a record until you've provided the opinions everyone wants. Kind of defeats the object. That's what this bit at the bottom's for. -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Yeah, that really a bad choice of cover
-
-
The Libertines - The Libertines
I have been listening to this album for the past month and I cannot believe you haven't credited it with what it deserves. It is filled with passion and bitter-sweet songs and I actually could not fault it. You say the recording is bad, but surely that adds to its magic? Everybody claims not to like over-produced records in an attempt to sound deep and mysterious but when something comes along which is raw and fresh, they cover their eyes and say the hate it just to defy the crowd. To me, the cover is a summary of what The Libertines are. Maybe some people don't understand this, or have enough imagination to embrace it. This was my first visit to this site, and it will certainly be my last.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
pesky kids.

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
One bad review and you're off? Blimey. This site really isn't for you. Debating the stuff you disagree with is half the fun...

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
hahahaha
this isn't the NME mate. different writers can have different opinions. -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
i think you're just bitter. i mean, three comments criticising the article and defending the article in quick succession is, i'm sorry to say, quite pathetic. go make up some INTERESTING conspiracy theory instead
-

The Libertines - The Libertines
i mean, the libertines were never brilliant to start with. they weren't bad, and had some quite good songs on the first album, but too much filler....i'm sorry, i just think they only have flashes of talent, unlike a few bands who just have it overflowing (Elbow, anyone?). i couldn't care less about Pete Doherty, anyway. the album? it's....not bad, but not special....something about the score it got given here-
The Libertines - The Libertines
I defended this article? Please show me where.
You say the libertines weren't brilliant to start with, but then say Elbow have talent? They try to be Radiohead, except, you know, without the tunefull-ness?
Some people don't get The Libertines, and when they don't, they can't come up with a better reason except saying it's crap, Pete's an idiot or copying various comments from other reviews.
In short, The Libertines is a great record.-
The Libertines - The Libertines
The Libertines and their music are like most things, you either get it or you don't...
All the same discussion surrounds Radiohead, some people "can't stand Thom 'fucking' Yorke's whining voice and think it's all miserable and weird", whilst others think that "that moment on Let Down when His voice explodes sends shivers down my spine... they are a generation defining band".
You mustn't be bitter if you don't get the Libertines, that is, if you can't see past poor engineering, apparent rambling and "aimless guitar riffs"... different smokes for different folks (i know that isn't the saying - is it spokes?).
I absolutely love The Libertines (you can probably tell by my biased comings). If the album was a tribute to the freedom success brings and the consequences of that there would be no better handbook.
Peter and Carl do fight armed with words and guitars, bringing out their deepest frustrations and love/hate feelings in song.
How they continue to play when persistant exchange of conflicing emotion is like another nail to his heart I do not know? This is really really raw. The Libertines (self-titled) in one way is, 'what is on the mind' coming out in music, much to the inevitable growing frustraion and heartbreak of the band and to the equal frustration, heartbreak and tears of the listener as their two heroes finish screaming for each others blood.
Read the lyrics and reap the issues. May I suggest a good listen to The Saga and then Music When the Lights go Out....
If you still don't get it, put it down to not having followed the story, because this is VERY very important... the music comes with history.
But turn around and say "it's crap" or "Pete's a dickhead" I think is just BITTERNESS towards the Libertines huge following and frustration that 'your' band just aren't as favoured.
Regards.
"All the highs and the low's and the to's and the fro's they left me dizzy, won't you please forgive me, I no longer hear the music."-
The Libertines - The Libertines
Perfectly summed up :)-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
im sorry i have to respond to the elbow message about them being radiohead, without the tunefulness. I am a massive fan of both, and both elbow albums are full of crackin melodies, very unexpectedly. The last few radiohead albums have had been nowhere near as melodic, but that, i think is the point.
libs are not worth the print space.
that is my tuppence.

Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
'If you still don't get it, put it down to not having followed the story, because this is VERY very important... the music comes with history.'
I like the album, but shouldn't a great album of music be standalone rather than relying, as you suggest, on knowing the story to go with it to make it enjoyable? You make it sound like this is just the soundtrack to The Adventures Of Pete 'n' Carl and can't be enjoyed without that, rather than actually being worth anything in itself.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
nah.. theres loads of underproduced music which does alright. razorlight - up all night.
but then whats the difference between something being 'underproduced' and something being purposefully produced that way to get the desired sound.Underproduced is mostly used in a negative way. yet if music sounds raw and live on the record, (so it sounds good). it is never descibed as being 'underproduced' (which is is) but as the producer capturing the live element of the band. or 'the raw energy'
maybe the problem with some records is the fact that the live energy isnt caught in a desirable way by the producer. or if the record has shit song writing and poor quality musicians, it has nothing to do with the producer the fact that the record is shit. for instance, i could go into a recording studio, rant some stuff straight out of my head. play three chord thrashings on a guitar, bang some basic rythms on drums. no amount of producing is going to make that sound good....
the above has nothing to do with the libertines. -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Have you ever prayed while listening to an album? Although I'm not religious, I was nearly kneeling during the first listen to the new disc - hoping, wishing, even praying for the next track to get better, and then the album ended....and my God has forsaken me... nothing.
It's not very good. I wanted to like it; i listened 5 more times trying to make myself like it, but alas i just wasn't feelin it at all. And I really shouldn't have to TRY to like an album, I should just be able to like it. Too many people out there feel that they need to like everything a band puts out to be considered a 'true fan' However, don't kid yourselves - parting of being involved in something is possessing the ability to be judgemental and honest. Basically, you should be able to listen to an album blind - with no knowledge of who it is or what they did before - and like it. Knowing their history and comcepts will just make it better, but you can't make chicken soup out of chicken sh*t. So if you like it, good. but in the words of Common(sense) "if i don't like it, i don't like it .. that don't mean that i'm hatin'"

The Libertines - The Libertines
'The Last few Radiohead albums'
Bar Amnesiac, the last Radiohead albums have been great, albums that Elbow couldn't touch if they tried. Trying to make the dirge of their music uplifting by adding gospel choirs? Please
Also, I think you mean Two Cents, or you're an idiot -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
For such a tiny little island you sure make a lot of noise - which is, of course, why we put up with ya's. I'm going to their (scheduled?) LA show with or without your permission cos this band makes my world a better place. Like speedballs used to (hope Pete finds god, or whatever, good luck.) But just now, I've a headache so pipe down over there, else I'm gonna force you to listen Creed. ;-) -
The Libertines - The Libertines
Yeah, OK agreed, a great album certainly should be enjoyable without knowing the images behind the soundtrack (quite a good way of describing it actually).
And in a whole different way the driving drums from Gary in Last Post, Peter's lyrical genius and swing rhythm from Man Who Would Be King, the fragile beauty, melody and lyrics of Music When the Lights Go Out, the bubbly but cynical laugh of The Narcissist, the knife-edge guitars that string the Ha Ha Wall, the beautiful close-part harmonies of What Katie Did, the overall musically fantasticness of Tomblands (plus united vocals), the rage and fury of guitars and singing in The Saga, the haunting organ and and instrumental brilliance of Road to Ruin and the melodic lines, vocals and clever guitar riffs of The Likely Lads is another way in which I support the cause for "The Libertines" being a wonderful wonderful album.
But I am trying to suggest a reason as to why you might not like the Libertines... and I think that they more than anyone today have a story that is massively reflected in the music and maybe this for many is where the real magic is??
I understand that this is all subjective though. -
The Libertines - The Libertines
Everybody seems to love 'em or hate 'em. Is anyone else out there just thoroughly bored with the whole hysteria and NME fuelled media overdrive surrounding the whole thing. The Libertines were a good band with a few good songs, not really anything more than that. They haven't done anything to justify their reputation, they never really got further than amusing their fans with petty crime and bickering, and failing spectacularly to live up to the little promise they showed in the beginning. Hopefully they'll disappear soon enough and drag along all the sideshow freaks and rabid fifteen year old female fans (with odd haircuts) who insist on wasting their time pretending there's some kind of scene with good music out there in Whitechapel, worth being a part of.
(Selfish C**t etc., stop trying to pretend that posing makes a good band). -
The Libertines - The Libertines
I'm a huge Libertines fan, having followed the saga for about 3 years. I know almost everything in the whole world about anything. Nah, haha. But i do love the Libertines and I have to say, canoe-man, that many of your points make a hell of a lot of sense and are very true.
The music scene in London is mostly dire. No one has come close to emulating the quality of the libertines (although Special needs are quite good in their own way - check em out)...
If the Libertines are over, you are absolutely right in saying that they have hopelessly failed in reaching their potential, but it's dangerous to talk in the past-tense as far as those boys go.
I think much of the fan base are fickle and ignorant... bands like the Libertines often typically attract idiots which is a shame. The experience of going to see them has become less and less enjoyable as their popularity has spread, not really because *it's less personal* but unfortunately, like the strokes, they inevitably attract arses who go out to ruin the show.
But as for the music, I think Peter is a wonderful songwriter even though he is an absolute idiot, who wastes his talent and the Libertines are fantastic musicians, despite some of the dire fret work that seems to encompass their work.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Sorry, didnt mean to start this as a new thread. was a follow on to a discussion on the reviews page.

The Libertines - The Libertines
Has anybody else heard Pete's version of Cant Stand Me? Just wondering how it came about...-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Parts of the song were taken from a JOLT song ( kitten ) written by mark hammerton now of The lams.

The Libertines - The Libertines
BIG FAN HERE: If we're talking about the music for one second here people and not what if's. One piece of advice for the reviewer is to listen to the album over and over. I agree, a problem free libertines would take the world by storm but you are a poor reviewer. Despite their problems they have made a "real" rock n roll record about themselves and their world. Fuck production. The production is spare and gives it a great Live feel, undeniably timeless.
Yes, the songs are not as focused as the first LP.
What do you expect? Its hearty, artful, diverse, spontaneous, unique and it lives, like Carl and Pete do.
(Oh i'm sorry, we better make sure the fretwork is polished, like us libertines you know, living polished lives)-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
cinder - im assuming you are a chap of american origin -so for your benefit, tuppence is an ENGLISH phrase - surprisingly I am from a country outside your own. I have no problem with your dislike of elbow, in fact I agree that radiohead are awesome - but your fuckin mindless arrogance in telling me i am STUPID because I used a phrase inherent to my own country is just ridiculous.
Tatty Bye old bean (this translates as good bye old friend, before you patronise me AGAIN)-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
What a bizzare comment Kerry.
Why should "unpolished fret-work" bare any reflection on "unpolished lives"?
The heart of 'the Libertines', the music, lyrics, production exudes and portrays a traumatic time... and it is extremely moving in all accounts.
BUT, justifying trashy/sloppy guitar playing as an underlying theme to trashy and sloppy libertine culture, i do believe that you are talking right out of your arse.
Sorry.
Btw, there are many many more examples on both records of absolutely fantastic musicianship yes including guitar work. They are talented talented boys.

The Libertines - The Libertines
5 good songs at most on the album, what became of the likely lads is really emotional, petes voice is still pretty good on it. Bottom line this album proves that, despite nme bumming them, the libertines are not the answer to rockin roll -
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
Er.... Elbow have been around longer than Radiohead. They wrote "Asleep in the Back" in the early 90s, you know.
-
-
The Libertines - The Libertines
There are a few unsatisfactory songs on this album (ie. Don't Be Shy, Road to Ruin) but the majority of the album rocks. And while 'The Libertines' is definitely not as amazing as 'Up the Bracket' was, it is honest and emotional, and fuck you all for criticizing them.-
Re: The Libertines - The Libertines
I bloody love the liberties!! Their so crazy and honest.
