Silent Drive: Love Is Worth It

Whilst it's right that you should never judge a book by its cover, the same can't be said of records: I'm forever forming my first impressions of a record from its cover alone. Sometimes it pays off - Former Miss America and Ikara Colt's latest offerings are albums worthy of their impressive wrappings - but sometimes it doesn't; I'm thinking Unkle here, and now Silent Drive.

The cover art is lovely, to the extent where you'd hang it on your wall in place of the frame full of family pictures (you know the sort - mum and dad in the oval, cousin whoever in the square...), but it disguises a remarkably average melodic hardcore album, not something expected from a band who count former members of Bane and Drowningman amongst their ranks. Despite starting strongly with a passionate '4/16', the album quickly loses itself in a swamp of mediocrity: 'Banana Rejection' could have been written by Lostprophets and, even more worringly, 'Rooftops' could be a more aggressive Disturbed. Disturbed? You bet I was. A few moments of Strike Anywhere-like energy late in the day fail to tip the scales of appreciation towards a higher-than-average rating.

Screaming and singing and guitars and banging... file next to Waterdown on the shelf of mildly diverting melodic hardcore records and dust off once a year. This love, for all its aesthetic appeal, really isn't worth any more.

Oh dear....as much as I like your writing in general, Mr. Diver, you've screwed this one up for sure. What's wrong with you?? This album is amaaazing...something a bit different to the rest of the American tripe we get shoved down our throats.

How dare you compare Silent Drive to Lost-fucking-prophets; that's just plain ignorance.

    Take
    another
    listen.

I know a few other people who really like it, but it never grabbed me. I must have played it through a dozen times before reviewing it, but even after that many listens it still felt nothing better than average. Just my opinion though! Don't take it as fact.

There are indeed moments of beauty in this record and it is far from bland, but there just seems to be something missing. It doesn't really flow, as if they're a little unsure of the direction they've taken. I've listened through to this about 7 or 8 times and I still can't decide whether I like it.

Hmmm, fair enough guys, I appreciate that it's not going to appeal to everyone. I just love the record because it's, as I said before, a real breath of fresh air in the current stale state of the "American modern-rock" genre (for want of a better phrase). Also, the first song reminds me of Million Dead....I guess I could imagine them doing that.

The vocals are strange though. The best description for them that I've read is that he has an almost Lighthouse Family-esque voice. Which, comes to think of it, does turn me off.....

Damnit, tbh, I think this album is awesome...

Out of a big collection of cd's I picked up from Canada when I went there the other week, this CD stood out...

It's actually one of my favourite cd's, so so good to my ears...so I dunno what you guys have been listening to...

I hope there's more to come by this awesome band :)!
