how totally and utterly life afirming

yeah

it was rather good.

i thought, as many have before me

that it had highlights, but was a pain on the feet for most of it.

how where

battles? ive only just got into them and ive heard they are immense live

battles were INCREDIBLE

i'd say probably slightly better than AC if truth be told. The new stuff was quite frankly brilliant.

probably?

definitely

well, yeah.

There were some wankers behind me who I feebishly told to "fuck off" at the end of kria brekken.

I don't think they understood.

I thought the audience reaction to her was disgraceful.

They even tried to talk through battles which was rather LOLsome.

Animal Collective were great and I really liked the new stuff and "peace bone" was fantastic live.

ac were defo better than battles. although the last track battles played was amazing. the new AC stuff worked really well i thought, esp 'fireworks'. actually it was all great. i found that the pain in the feet could be relieved by dancing like a lunatic; when they played 'banshee beat' i went literally mental.

i danced a fair bit when given a remotely good reason to do so

liek, it not being in the middle of a horribly long tape manipulation solo

i think i was just really really really

in the 'zone'. hope that didnt sound annoying or pretentious. but it was just perfect for me. i never noticed it getting to abstract or arty, i even remember being suprised that it wasn't more removed and weird.

same

I've listened to some live sets and it was basically exactly what I was expecting.

However Battles really were much much better than I thought they were and their singing was possibly the coolest thing EVA. All my hairs were standing on end at the start of SZ2.

yeh

the beatboxing at the start of 'dance' was pure sex

yes

that was exactly how I felt about it.

I was completely entranced by the whole thing.

that was incredible.

I wanted to watch that for hours.

The second song they did, before grass (I don't know what it was called), that was beautiful. Geologist was sampling some drum thing and sliding the pitch all the way down so it made a kind of tumbling noise. It was amazing.

Fireworks is possibly the best song they've ever done. And Purple Bottle sounded incredible.

They're the most life affirming band in the world, and I can't pin down why at all. I love them, so much.

Battles were really ace, but I'd forgotten I'd even seen them after animal collective finished.

thanks.

I still haven't learnt all the names of the new songs.

I'm listeing now though. It's so good.

so far I know it, Chores, Fireworks and Peace bone. They're all fantastic.

you bastards got grass

we never at t. boo.

hmm

horrendous gig.

though we basically travelled all the way down to see Adem, who had been removed from the bill because someone from AC is doing that horrible warbling violin-raping mad girl who was on first, it turns out. finding this out twelve hours ago would've been nice
(when did it become a good thing to not actually be able to play the instruments you're, uh, playing?)

battles sounded like four session musicians playing different music, half the time. i just don't get it.
props for the beatboxing on the last track, though

AC were alright, though we were mostly fucked off at paying out and travelling to not actually see who we'd wanted to. so we left.

life totally unaffirmed in relation to this.

And he was only playing 20 minutes which people would have probably talked over.

So you would have probably been even more annoyed.

"(when did it become a good thing to not actually be able to play the instruments

you're, uh, playing?)"

......................................

yeah

just read it on getting home

last i'd checked tuesday morning he was on sometime after kria brekken, so i'd expected half an hour at least, given the start time

instead she got 45 minutes!

i didnt think she had that long

it was a bit ridiculous that she stopped playing her songs, but some of her syuff was brilliant

"instead she got 45 minutes!"

surely not?

She played roughly 5 songs most of which she stopped half way through? And she only got more time because adem decided not to play.

I only caught the tail end of her set

when she was stopping halfway through songs. So I probably couldn't form a decent opinion of her.

I would have sooner seen adem for sure though.

It was hard to form an opinion anyway.

I was right at the front and it sounded like a busy street behind me. I liked what I saw though.

I haven't really heard much Adem but from what I have (honestly very little) I would have rather seen Brekken...

ah well

i'm sorry you didn't feel the same way. when i saw animal collective for the first time i hated them too. if it makes you feel any better, i've never seen anyone live more times than adem, and i've never once payed to see him. the man gets about. so i'm sure you'll catch him sometime.

and i hope animal collective clicks for you one day

don't get me wrong

what i've heard of animal collective recorded i've liked.
the heat combined with the annoyance of not seeing adem combined with post-work tiredness led to an early exit

girlfriend's not seen adem for about two years and was really looking forward to it so i'm keeping fingers crossed for a swift make-up gig

and homesick_alien

you speak the truth. purple bottle was beyond good.

yeah

she totally couldnt play her electric piano, or her guitar. what a talentless bitch.
and it wasnt a violin.
and yes, clearly you dont get the idea of polyrhythms.

sucks that you came down for Adem, but it had been announced for a day or two that he wasnt playing. and generally a bit of an expensive way of seeing him.

i didn't get kria

but battles were ace, and animal collective had some fantastic moments. I'm not massively into them on record, but they came across well live

oooh

i was stood reet near you, but didnt say hi, as im socially retarded.

ah

i didn't see you. d'oh

vague set list for anyone who cares

I got most of it from memory but the middle is totally screwed.

Reverend green
Cuckoo
Grass
Chores
? ?
Street flash
Safer
Banshee beat
Peace bone
We tigers
ENCORE
Flesh canoe
Did you see the words

Battles were ridiculously good.

Absolutely loved them and in my opinion AC came off pretty bad going on after them. They were too soaked in reverb and delay for my liking, I couldn't hear the melodies over all the noise. And when it broke down into samples and shouting i got rather bored. It did get better as the set went on though and the drummer was ace.

Battles were terrific

As always. That song where they cranked up the bass slowly but surely until every part of your body was resonating was utterly brilliant.

I am still not sure about Animal Collective. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it.

Battles though... I love John Stanier SOOO MUCH.

I thought Battles were very good,

but Animal Collective was the best thing I've seen this year. They were brilliant and I would happily watch that every night for the rest of the year.

we left half way

through their set at Primavera...found it a bit of a chore tbh

Wow!!!

They were amazing!
The second half was outstanding!
BATTLES were amazing yet again - they are so talented!
I can't wait to see them at Truck!

i liked our support

better than when i saw battles. she was amazing!

but animal collective = bonustastic.

Did anyone else get a fat-cat sample CD?

the panda bear song's pretty good.

Panda Bear is a genius..

His solo albums are amazing as his other band Jane.

Which was the song Panda Bear sung some lead vocals on? It was one of my favourites.

I thought they were amazing, far less abstact and droney than when i've seen them before. There were only brief passages of tape manipulation in between songs which I thought made the whole set flow much better.

Geologists plays a really prominent role live compared to the recorded stuff, I really enjoyed. Peace Bone, Reverend Green, and Fireworks are all as good as any songs in their back catalouge; can't wait for the new album.

I bought the jane album yesterday

It sounds very good.

AGG Report

is an unbeleivable track. Tis a great album for going to sleep to.

Unbelievable

Kria was pretty good.. but to be honest you could hear very little of it because of the talk-the-loudest contest going on behind.
I was right at the front in the middle with 'millionaire' and yeah my opinions are shared on the audience front.

Battles surpassed my already stupidly high expectations. They were simply STUPIDLY good. The fact that I was right next to them also made it that little bit more special.. seeing how they effortlessly fit together was just incredible.

As if that wawsn't enough (seeing Battles was like seeing a band easily fit for headlining a venue of that size), Animal Collective were just as good. I shared a moment with Geologist, heh (had to throw that in). When Avey told peopel to come up on stage Geologist made hand gestures to tell people to come up and was looking right at me. I shrugged merrily and he grinned, heh. Quite proud really.

Highlights of the night were Banshee Beat, Purple Bottle, Peace Bone and We Tigers. And finishing with Did You See The Words was wonderful!

All of Battles' new material sounds ace, certainly will be buyng their new album as soon as it's out.

And you can't help but feel sorry for Kria when you were as close to her as I was; you really could see that she wasn't happy. She was trying to say that Manchester was the best, implying that she didn't get the crap she got at the Astoria there. Poor girl...

All in all, despite the annoying crowd through Brekken, it was pretty much 10/10 simply because of how goodf Battles and Animal Collective were.

Oh and something I noticed about last night.. the staff at the Astoria aren't half arseholes. I know they have a curfew to 'beat', but at least have a little more curtesy at the end. And it wasn' just at the end really, they were just generally depressed-looking, always angry and unapproachable. Most venues I've been to the security were much more friendly and, to be honest, efficient.

Top marks though, a magnificent night.

Trendy Arsheholes

Thankyou so much to the myspace kids that "wooed" and football whistled all over Avey's lovely singing for the whole of the encore. I think there's a difference between celebrating a great band and pissing all over their music. Also thankyou to the fat armed girl that is probably still removing her make up with a trowel. Thanks for shoving people out of the way and smoking a cigarette in my eye when Animal Collective dedicated Banshee Boat to "Josh's dad who passed away last week." England is the country where everybody is the biggest fan of everything.

I don't think that was too bad but

Few french fellas behind me and my friends didn't shut up until AC came on...annoying....how can someone try to talk through Battles :S

Look on the bright side though, it WAS fantastic, there's no denying that.

Heh, girl just behind my friend, apparently pissed as a rat, tried to climb over the barrier. Just simply pushed my friend out of the way and stuck her leg over the top of it. The already uptight arsegoles of security came over and stared her down really.
And a guy near my friend decided to take his shirt off. Apparently wasn't too pleasant.

But hey, it's a free world - I hope he enjoyed it... just for next time: try to remember there are otehrs around you too.

I guess that's just what people have to rememebr, if not.. oh well.
