The D4 first started in Auckland City, New Zealand. Jimmy and Dion had known each other a while after meeting each other at a party in 1997. The initial line-up of the band included 'English' Jake on bass and Rich 'Mixture' on drums. They have since been replaced with two new members, Vaughan and Beaver.
In 1999 a four-track debut EP, 'The D4EP was released on Flying Nun Records. Throughout 1999 and 2000 the band gained a great reputation for their live shows and eventually began playing on the same bills as Guitar Wolf, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Fu Manchu and Jet. The band began to tour other countries including Australia and Japan.
The band's second EP, which included the song 'Ladies Man', was released in early 2001 in New Zealand. The D4 then set about recording their debut album, 6Twenty with the help of Andrew Buckton in York Street Studios. Their first UK single, 'Rock'n'Roll Motherfucker', was released in April 2002. The album was released in June, followed by a full UK tour.
