The Evens

The Evens

Signed to label: Southern

For the uninitiated amongst you, Ian MacKaye is something of a punk legend. Having been in two of the most influential bands in the scene (Minor Threat and Fugazi), he helped shape modern punk in a way that few others have managed.

With Fugazi he took the early aggression of Minor Threat and welded it to dub basslines and guitars that swung from beautifully understated and shimmering textures to loud and clinically precise noise. This new project sees him collaborating with Amy Ferrina of The Warmers to produce something far more stripped down.

Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina's new The Evens, have just finished recording and mixing their debut album at Inner Ear Studios, and to celebrate they're upping sticks from Washington DC to tour Europe. Amy plays drums and Ian plays baritone guitar, both sing - usually together. Their music is similar to Ian's tracks on Instrument, but Amy's influence takes the songs down surprising and interesting paths. Live, the band put their vocals through amps rather than using a PA, even the album was recorded without overdubs, contributing further to the intimate nature of their spirited and spartan songs.
