"Gleefully unhinged music" Planet Sound, Channel 4 Teletext
Second single ahoy! The Race would like to introduce you to 'Amersham Road/Hope Song', a double a-side of big choruses(tm), swoops and swirls. It's a real stormer and we're dead proud. Mini symphonies. Crashing guitars.
It all started with a demo. Having formed in July 2004, The Race thought it was about time they had something their friends could listen to. The 'Raising Children/Go Figure' demo was finished early 2005 and duly put in the post... six months later and The Race have a nationally distributed single in the shops, radio sessions with BBC 6MUSIC and XFM under their belts and additional airplay from Radio 1 and Virgin. That humble demo was also lauded in the NME and led to a 'Ones to Watch' feature in THE FLY magazine.
Gigs followed. Support slots with Supergrass, The Features, Pure Reason Revolution, Coldplay's touring buddies Morning Runner, and a festival appearance in Spain supporting Fun Lovin' Criminals and Jamiroquai helped four boys and a girl top up their tans in preparation for another busy year. Twelve months and nearly 80 gigs later, the band have discovered their sound.
"Really, our ethos as a band is that we want to write great songs and beautiful, progressive music, that's uplifting and affirming. When people come see us play live, we want them to leave feeling joyous. Thankfully, this is what seems to be happening!" - The Race, August 2005.
The Race are just about to set off on their first UK tour. Once touring duties are over the second single will hit the shops. Two more songs 'Amersham Rd/Hope Song' - watch and listen.
Amersham Road is a street in Reading where Dan and Graeme did some youth work a couple of summers ago - the songs on this single are dedicated to the kids there.
The Race. It rhymes with ACE. In your FACE.
by Adie Nunn
'an agreeable cutlet of unashamed big rock, full of guitars chiming out like bells at a fancy wedding'.
NME
'a magical debut single. Its a smearing of Pixies, with a light dusting of early U2, that should have you heading for the start line'
The Fly (Ones to Watch feature June 2005)
'an unapologetic, impassioned and impressive call to arms... transports you away from the drabness of four walls... positively sparkles'
Drowned in Sound
'it's gorgeous, lilting, alt rock with subtle metallic guitars and a sublime and romantic vocal kicking' ... this is genuinely beautiful music with vocals that are passionate, not fake bluster.'
