"In Plato’s Republic, he asserts that; ‘the quickest way to undermine any society is through its music’. In Laws he goes further, insisting that musical views should be ‘told’ to people, not allowed to grow naturally, as it is; ‘inevitable that a man should grow like what he enjoys, whether good or bad, even though he may be ashamed to prove it’. In Plato’s perfect society, where there would be no crime, no voice of dissent, a chosen few would make your decisions for you, including what you listened to.
So what has this got to do with you, eh? Simple really. Put the radio on any music station you like. What’s on? OK. Now, what’s really on? Nothing. It’s bland. It’s got a beat and a melody of sorts. It’s catchy. The word ‘love’ crops up with alarming regularity, in the same breath as ‘baby’ and ‘mmm, yeah’. It’s the lowest common denominator. It’s like reading the stars in the Sun, when what you should be doing is looking at them in the beautiful, clear night sky.
It doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to fall for big business rhetoric. There’s a world of music out there beyond the top 40, and we’re just the guys to take you there. There’s a bunch of local chaps going by the name of the Cathode Ray Syndrome, or CRS*. They’re young, arrogant, shy, beautiful, loud, ugly, passionate and ultimately unforgettable all at once. Their music is reserved, intricate, frenetic, absorbing, fast and intense in one glitter drenched wave of emotional intensity. If you’ve heard Mogwai, Gwei Lo or Slint, you’re getting the picture. If you haven’t, then you should (off you go then). ."
