i'm in the mood for some icy icelandic pop. i own debut but nowt else. which is best??!!
I'd go chronological after that.
when i see these threads.....just wondering if there was any outstanding album....are they all excellent?
except perhaps her last album Volta, which was patchy at best. For a real icy wintery vibe, I'd choose Vespertine.
It has a more consistent tone throughout the album, which I often feel is a bit missing from her other full lengths. The production is almost perfect, helped by electronic duo Matmos, full of glitches, bells and chimes. Also contains the epic Pagan Poetry, possibly my favourite Björk song ever.
Björk - Pagan Poetry
I think it's pretty solid. I think it sounds like a good meeting of all her albums, bar Medulla.
this was meant to be below all other replies!
massive, massive influence on post-Bends Radiohead.
*ahem* i dont like radiohead......
'Unravel' and 'All Is Full of Love'
And the rest are dead good.
Of the five I've heard - Debut, Post, Homogenic, Medulla and Volta - it has the best hits-to-misses ratio, and is also very accessible. Debut's beats sound very dated, Post is erratic, Medulla is great but hard work, and Volta is mediocre.
Although this is obviously all very subjective.
Though I think her two best are Homogenic and Vespertine. The latter is beautiful, perfect winter album.
i think i might go for vespertine first.
whats the remix album, Telegram like?
but i would recommend 'Selmasongs' for sure.
but just go through it chronologically, bjork is one of the few artists whom's catalogue i go through chronologically in a day from time to time.
as for telegram, i quite enjoyed that, but never listen to it when i listen to all her albums one after the other.
If you're after some wintery pop.
It's pretty much perfect for that.
I also adore Post though. Maybe because it was the first non-rock album I ever owned and opened a world of other music to me.
Vespertine and i absolutely love it! One of my favourites of the decade, but i think maybe now i should get something else too. Is homogenic the natural choice?
That or Post.
easily her masterpiece, stunning record, but in terms of accesibility i agree that chronologically would be the way to go. Debut and Post are her most poppy and catchy efforts, with the latter expanding the sonic exploration. Despite what's claimed above Vespertine is not a good starting point, despite being a beautiful album it's far too elusive, only one stand out song (Pagan Poetry) - more of an album atmosphere experience i'd say...
i have big ears.
Because it's a stunning album. Then go with Homogenic. Then Medulla. Then Post. Then Volta.
...is the most wintery I'd say, and is utterly beautiful, but I agree with the chronological suggestions as she has grown with every album.
but Vespertine & Homogenic are better records imo. Debut sounds a little dated now.
Go Homogenic - Post - Vespertine - Volta - Debut - Medúlla.
however i'm listening to Vespertine right now and it sounds FUCKING SWEET. thanks for the recommendations.
an.d theres only so many i can start per day
K.U.K.L. (Icelandic for witch, apparently) came before, and are pretty good - it's worth checking out 'The Eye', if you want to hear Bjork fronting an deeply weird, abstract goth-punk band. There's some good sugarcubes stuff too, Birthday Party and Deus are great songs. But they're quite odd, and it's by far best to get all the Bjork solo stuff first.
it's just not cricket
vespertine live is on spotify and is mind blowingly good!
Can't say i'm the biggest fan of 'Debut' as an album, but it has some cracking tunes on it. 'Homogenic' and 'Vespertine' stand out as her best and 'Medulla' is also one of the most cleverly-made albums i've ever heard.
Enjot the wonders you are about to experience.
