How come I never heard of these before
Mary Louise is a bit of a tune: http://dawnofthereplicants.bandcamp.com/track/mary-louise
Check out Pluto Monkey too. Paul Vickers still releases the odd album as far as I know and Mike Small released some stuff as the Stone Ghost Collective on his Shark Batter Records label, as well as some some of Roger Simian's Stark Palace recordings too.
and have featured on two of my three DisTape mixes. Seem to remember a lot of airplay and interest leading up to the first album but it drained away very quickly. 1998/99 wasn't a great time for bands to be breaking through.
I first came across these when working on the Pompey Uni student union mag - released about 18 singles off the first record. Can't blame 'em - it was a great LP - Lisa Box, Radars, Candlefire - great tunes. I've bought all of their albums since then.
Some of the later stuff doesn't sparkle quite as much, but he Paul Vickers had a great, distinctive voice, and they were very good when I saw them play in York in 2004.
I last saw Vickers performing a kind of DaDa-ist story-telling/puppet show on the Free Fringe in Edinburgh. To call it bizarre doesn't do it justice, especially when you consider his show was on at 10 in the morning every day in the back room of a boozer.
