Drowned in Sound

was a bit crap.

Pipettes- good, but the songs last for about 2 seconds and the audience was almost entirely made up of creepy men ogling.

New Rhodes- OK.

Battle- Bloc Party crossed with the Lightning Seeds. Frontman looked as though someone had put angry bees down his t-shirt. This not being the case, he was simply being a bit affectedly Ian Curtis.

Good Shoes- Pretty good, although slightly marred by rubbish crash barriers and security. Boooo.

Mando Diao- the funniest band I've ever seen. They could make more money as a tribute band, and perhaps they should. If only they'd played You Can't Steal My Love...

British Sea Power- poor sound, slightly will-this-do performance. I left halfway through though, so maybe they were just waiting for me to leave.

Art Brut- Great as always, despite broken guitars and stuff. Only good band of the night, despite people at the front keen on Rocking Out (trans. knocking over innocent bystanders like eejits).

Then we all went home.

By the way, isn't it illegal to refuse to serve tap water and charge £4 for a bottle? If someone had died they would have been screwed. Ah well.

Rant over- anyone see any decent bands that night?

  • Musically speaking, the Insomniac's Ball

    • Agree with the above

      and also saw:

Black Wire - who do punk-funk-electro in a mildly interesting way, although the singer was most off-key for most of the time. Also marred by overzealous security (see Good Shoes).

The Rifles - low-rent version of the Arctic Monkeys. Got v v bored v v quickly.

Komakino - seem to have lost their passion since I last saw them, it was just a wall of incoherent noise.

White Rose Movement - Sisters Of Mercy gone disco. A bit disturbing but enjoyable.

    • i only actually saw BSP

it was so full of twats that i dont think i could have enjoyed any other bands if i tried

BSP were a little complacent, BSP by numbers perhaps (Hamilton's vocals How Will I Ever Find My Way Home? were the most out of tune thing i've ever heard), I feel slightly robbed by the whole thing

    • yes

      komakino
      nuff said...

    • yes

      it is illegal

      • Then

I hope they get sued. Boo to horrible greedy promotions people.

Think I might stick to small gigs for a while, to let my ire cool...

    • I DON'T KNOW

      :(

      • I was going to come to this

but having read the 'reviews' I'm glad I didn't. Was it REALLY that bad? Did anyone have a good time at any point?

        • Well

          1)Pipettes
          2)Meeting nice DiS people
3)Laughing at Mando Diao (esp. when they dedicated a song to 'bands with no songs')
4)Art Brut when I wasn't being squished by large men
          5)Going home

That's about one enjoyable thing for every hour I was there. Of course, I might be being a miserable get...

        • well

my experience was summarised in here:

          http://drownedinsound.com/content/view/770316

I think I enjoyed it for a bit, I was dancing for ages, and then I realised I had no coat...

it pretty much was that bad though, yeah.
