20.45: After standing through openers Junk who are remarkably unremarkable, I position myself for Read Yellow. Hailing from Amherst, Massachusetts in the good ol' US of A, their promising demos don't prepare me for their live onslaught. Lead singer, Evan is a coiled spring of intensity and is all over the stage from opener 'The Association'. A combination of straight-up punk with moments of art-rock melody, Evan and guitarist Jesse leap all over the place. The sultry stare of bassist, Michelle cuts right into the crowd. The unrelenting show climaxes at 'Static', one of the most amazing tunes I have heard in a long time. The live version is much longer and much more intense and focused than on the record with each chord seemingly cutting deeper in to your psyche with the progressive build of noise, intensity and tempo drawing you in, second by second.
21:45 The band come offstage and I wander over to the merch stand wondering how the headliners are gonna follow this... in retrospect of the event, it is quite possibly the stupidest question I have ever put to myself. The band come on stage looking like the bastard sons of Emerson, Lake & Palmer with a Phil Collins meets Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins on the drums.. but then the band play and from this point on, I can't stop smiling throughout. With their new album on its way they're set to convert the masses and take over the world. They may well come from NYC and they may be one of The Strokes favourite bands but these guys owe their musical style much further south. From the heart of Georgia and the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd coupled with the pomp rock of late T-Rex with a dash of Chicago style blues (think Jake & Elwood) thrown in for good measure.
The band are manic with Phil Lynott alike John Paul signing to the crowd throughout to clap along. New single 'Alive & Amplified' is a real dash of revved-up, old school rock and rocking like the proverbial beast with lead man Sammy James Jr acting like the 100 per cent rock god that he is. A few older tracks such as 'Oh Sweet Suzanna' & 'I Say I Love You' get the adrenaline racing and from this point on, things step up a gear. We get Graham Tyler clocking various members of the audience in the head with his guitar, jumping into the crowd for a spaz out (but I catch him, rah!), Sammy and Graham both climbing the stack speakers and continuing to rock while the drummer Will gets out from behind his kit and starts over exaggerated line walking and throwing chairs about onstage and thoughout you can see the security getting worried as they have no idea what is going to happen next... fantastic!
23:00 After the band depart there is not a SINGLE person here tonight who is not impressed but what they have just seen. The stage show, the music, the songs were all amazing and every one of the sweaty bodies at the front of the stage would happily stay for more. The Mooney Suzuki are the best live band I have seen this year and on this form could be set to take over the world and boy you better be ready for it!
The Mooney Suzuki
but they're still doing the 2002 thing and the world has moved on.
and the singer should need a licence for that nose.
