Someone’s had the decorators round – the Underworld is plastered in promotional posters, each one advertising The Explosion’s forthcoming Black Tape LP. The band themselves seem somewhat embarrassed by their label’s heavy handed tactics, but get on with the rock ‘n’ roll at hand with gusto enough. It’s just a shame that the punk rock’s already been and left.

Bullet Union, on before the major-label mob, are tonight’s unsung heroes. With a new, eponymous debut album out later this month (through Leeds-based label Jealous), the London quartet have tightened themselves into an outfit of frightening conviction. Ramshackle shows are a thing of the past; from now on, the charm that carried them through their earliest performances is to be replaced by a dogged determination to hammer all in attendance into bloody submission. Drum skins barely last the distance; guitar strings strain to bear the brute force of the fingers that lay siege to them - this is tonight’s Punk Rock 101, referencing the Dischord sound of old and remoulding it into an exciting, passionate, progressive future. The Explosion’s popped-up take on the class is little more than Steps to these re-educated ears, and whilst the Bostonians provide more in the way of visual thrills, their music is no more than Sunday league punk when compared to Bullet Union’s upper tier league leaders. What they do, they do well, but what’s come immediately before them this evening does it better.

All bands have a time; on tonight’s evidence, Bullet Union’s is nigh, if not quite right now. Maybe they need some posters, or something, to push things forward…?

Bullet Union

Hmmm, I've only ever seen Bullet Union once (supporting Blood Brothers at the Underworld) and they didn't strike me as anything very good or original (except for the last song they played which sounded like Godspeed you black metal emperor, I'm so clever). The Explosion suck anyway.

Re: Bullet Union

Was at that show, too.
Have seen BU a number of times now, and they're getting better and better.

The Explosion

Are The Explosion any different to Good Charlotte?

Re: Bullet Union

Just added to the bill for this Thursday...

BIRDS OF PARADISE
"The Birds of Paradise, scabrously surveying the baron musical wasteland that lays pathetic and weak around them circle majestically before dropping their steaming musical nailbomb. Weighing heavy in its oblivious post modernity it obliterates the walls of sanity and structure without remorse! The smoke dissipates. They come in to land." - DiS

I can't wait.

Bullet Union

I saw Bullet Union supporting Cursive last March, they were good; haven't heard a lot since then about them though. I kind of forgot about them after seeing the nuclear explosion that was YMSS for the first time, and the sheer brilliance of Cursive (in my opinion one of the finest art/rock bands around at the moment - I can't understand why the emo tag is thrown at them).

I'm going to make it a priority to investigate Bullet Union further.

"Are The Explosion any different to Good Charlotte?"

Sound-wise they used to be very different. Used to sound like The Clash sped up, now they sound like Good Charlotte with just as little vitality. I know I've said this pretty much every time 'Black Tape' gets mentioned, but it truly is the biggest anti-climax I've ever heard. 5 years to write THAT!?

Bullet Union, on the other hand, OWN.
