Silhouettes Of Soldiers

Having never really understood the point of post-hardcore angst driven rock - well, since At The Drive-In's demise, can you honestly see the point? It is with tin hat and an endless supply of trepidation that I set foot inside the darkened confines of the Mill, expectations not exactly brimming, but not quite below ground level either.

First up are local trio Girl 6, whose Lightning Bolt/Kill The Buick Six mangled noise sounds rustier than a Locust soundcheck, quickly alluring itself to the timeless elegy that empty vessels do make the most abrasive sounds after all. One "song" seems to consist entirely of various members screaming out of time "I'm sorry, we're sorry...". So are we.

Fortunately the arrival of From The Shards Of Comets! adds a delightful edge of mischief and enigmatic fervour to the proceedings. Their apocalyptic furrowing of all things loud and dramatic recall Godspeed! You Black Emperor during their earliest and most definitive period. Imagine 65 Days Of Static sharing a room with Brian Eno for a fortnight and this would be the result. Blissful, dynamic, and totally out of sync with the rest of tonight's bill.

Not that Silhouettes Of Soldiers put on a bad show either.
Their brooding semi-nihilistic hardcore brings to mind the intensity of Glassjaw coupled with the heavyweight riffage of Monster Magnet, while the way their singer flails and collapses over the front of the stage during the tumultuous climax of their set suggests this lot will stop at nothing to succeed. S.O.S. are certainly ones to watch for the future, particularly as the UK post-hardcore scene has buried itself so far underground even the daisy roots are out of sight.

And so on to Milwaukee's Since By Man, whose heavily tattooed frontman Sam Macon shouts and screams a lot, mostly incoherent, and definitely to the detriment of tune. Its at this point that I decide to leave, job done, although 2 out of 4 can't be all bad for a breezy Wednesday night in Mansfield.

Since By Man

gaaaaaah! no! since by man are NOT incoherent, and there is no lack of tune! NO!

Since By Man

To be fair... it was the crowd shouting 'Im sorry' out of time for Girl6.

Girl 6

It appears that you are rather biased, I enjoyed the whole gig muchly. I believe that Girl6 did a stirling job - it's never easy to be the first band on, and I felt very much entertained by their show, I thought it was fab So :p to you

I also loved From the Shards of Commets (Woo!), and was at the front when the lead of S.O.S. toppled over the front and landed on my feets, it was most excellent and I must say last nights gig has made my week! I cannot however comment on Since By Man due to having to catch the last bus home. x

Re: Girl 6

"It appears that you are rather biased"

If being biased means having a pair of ears that are in fine working order and can tell the difference between a tune and a non-discernable racket then yes, I am biased.

Since By Man

i'm glad someone enjoyed our set (comets) i think we were a little out of place. but the gig was great regardless of that. i enjoyed it.

Since By Man

hmm, im sure stiggy will butt rape me but i have to agree with Dom, i kinda liked that 'im sorry' track but i couldnt help but feel a little disappointed.

i think a couple of the comets tracks were awesome (invisible ghost, which is on rotation on the mp3 player quite often) and the last one, jus one or two tracks of filler in the set. that instrumental one 'leviticus'?? is much better live.

sos were cool too, it got a bit samey but again the last track was awesome.

after hearing jus one track since by man were greatly disappointin, after bein described here as hardcore with dancey parts which is 'godspeed-esque' i didnt think that would equate to one song with a tribal drum beat and one song with delay.

Re: Since By Man

Haha not at all, opinions are opinions my good man. Good review i thought, not sure about the lightning bolt comparision (is it because i use bass distortion?) but im glad Dom came down. Seems like a nice bloke hehe.

Your just dissapointed because we didnt play a city of caterpillar cover haha.

Thanks

just like to say thanks for the glowing review, i had a top night. i thought all the bands were fantatastic. since by man were super nice guys.
