Bradford-on-Avon trio Blackbud are a bit of an anomaly. They're the sort of band who your Uncle John, the weird one your mother told you to avoid from the age of six because he smokes these "funny" cigarettes and calls everyone "maa-aan" would be performing cartwheels about were he not past the age of retirement. A musician's band for real musicians, not like those three minute fly-by-nights who pilfer from the best bits of the last three decades gone by. If something's not long enough then let's jam until the fretboard disintegrates into shards of sawdust and the strings match the texture of well worn threads of cotton.

But before you think your worst nightmare is about to come true, let's look at the positives too, because Blackbud do have several.

First of all there's vocalist Joe Taylor, a younger, more eloquent variant on the hollow metaphoric pronunciations of Jeff Buckley or Thom Yorke, while bass player Adam Newton throws the sort of shapes usually reserved for Ozzfest, some people questioning if he's in a different band or whether there's a completely different sound being delivered through his earpiece to what's coming out of the monitors.

They also have a handful of noteworthy tunes such as forthcoming single 'Heartbeat', thrown away at the start of tonight's set, which eats Keane - piano, fat bloke and all - for breakfast and spits out the ivories at £1 a throw souvenirs after. Likewise, the beautiful elegance of 'Forever' and skyscraping neurosis of 'Barefoot' make you wonder why they don't stick to the basics more often.

If only they'd kick out the jams, Blackbud would be a far more entertaining proposition without the chin-stroking worthiness that makes them so frustrating at the minute.

I saw their Oxford gig and...

... it was bloody brilliant!

One of the most naturally talented bands I've seen in a while.

And you've got to love the bass player...

I hadn't...

heard of these guys until recently but they seem to be doing quite well. They've played Glasto etc. and been on with Zane Lowe I have yet to see them live but that e.p. is really promising. The singer has a great voice actually. Like Buckley in some respects like you say.
