It's not very often that I leave a gig early, but tonight is one of those nights. In hindsight, The Magic Numbers were up against it from the very beginning: an indoor venue, a lacklustre crowd and not much in the way of summer vibes.

You see, The Magic Numbers seem to be a band who suffer from the musical equivalent of seasonal affective disorder. Either that or patience stretches a little further when the sun is out. Tonight, though, their male/female brother/sister thing is interesting for the first five minutes, Romeo's beard enough to hold the attention for a further two, but after you've estimated their combined weight for the fifth time ... the interest begins to wane, and there's precious little to differentiate them from your other radio friendly ColdBlunts.

It's easy to imagine falling in love with the yearning vocals and three-part harmonies on a blazing August afternoon, and the appeal of songs like 'Love Me Like You' and 'Forever Lost' is instant even in darkest October, but as a headline act their current repertoire leaves something to be desired.

The middle of the set, in particular, is instantly forgettable. Combining recent Warchild offering 'Gone Are The Days' with a Neil Young cover and a B-side might have seemed like a good idea in rehearsal but tonight it succeeds only in sending the audience to sleep or to the bar.

There's nothing wrong with the musicianship on display; indeed when they loosen up and jam a little Romeo's guitar playing comes to the fore and the proverbial sun threatens to come out, but such moments are few and far between. As winter draws in, perhaps The Magic Numbers should hibernate because nobody wants to see them undo a summer's worth of good work.

The Magic Numbers

With regard to the last sentence, I'd put the full stop seven words earlier and delete those last seven words.

Re: The Magic Numbers

At last! people who don't think the magic numbers are the best thing since sliced bread! who cares what they look like - the fact is their music is bland and boring and puts me to sleep! I want them to just go away.

Re: The Magic Numbers

Sorry to sound all "scene" and whathaveyou, but I've been saying they're shite since February :P

Re: The Magic Numbers

i saw them supporting someone at brixton aaaaaaaaages ago (i can't remember who it was now) and it was the most boring set i'd ever seen. they just have no charisma/stage presence/anyredeemingfeatures.... sorry magic numbers, but your music... is.... crap. fuck off already.

Re: The Magic Numbers

Probably Doves?

Re: The Magic Numbers

that sounds right. thanks :) i did see them at brixton. they were as per usual, great, but t'was obviously marred by the numbers and their boringness.......

Re: The Magic Numbers

Not keen then.

Re: The Magic Numbers

well.... no. i should really stop ranting about them... i think i've made my view on them clear! i think i'm extra bitter just because everyone i've said to - 'oh, i don't like them. i think their music lacks anything interesting and they're overhyped', has looked at me with disdain and as if i had a third eye on my forehead. so, it was nice to finally find some people that agree with me!!!!

Re: The Magic Numbers

new single sounds like olivia newton-john.

Re: Magic Numbers

I don't think they're that bad really, probably about a fair review; they filled a slot in summer, and the two singles prior to the new one (which is a stinker) were half-decent, hummable tunes that are decnet enough for me to have gone out on bought the album (which is a disappointment on the whole). They'd benefit from doing as the review says and just disappearing throught the winter, because my patience is waning with them at present and i think they may well lose any remaining good feeling to be had towards them if they don't give it a break for now. Think they're buggering off to America for a while soon anyway.

magic numbers

fair enough!
i hope they stay there...
