135 years ago Friedrich Nietzsche described the perfect tragedy, the highest form of art, as the convergence of two diametrically opposed forces in a ‘marvelous metaphysical act’. These two forces were the Gods; Apollo of music, drunkenness and instinct meeting in a marital bliss with Dionysus, the God of visual arts, reason and rationality. Nietzsche offered Wagner as the epitome of his theories, but I think tonight, I’ve found a better example.
65daysofstatic are the perfect fit. They are primal, but neither simple nor organic. They’ve had to fuse their sonic buildings together with electronic bricks and created worlds from a place beyond the wildest of imaginations. Like a child building a tower from wooden blocks, 65days do this all just to to rip it up and start again.
As if their all-enveloping sound isn’t enough, tonight the band play in front of provocative visual projections and imagery. Flashes of the end of the world, warnings about nuclear weapons and buildings falling to rubble.
They charge through their set in beautiful, violent malevolence, encompassing both creation and destruction, until they open the box marked 'Radio Protector'; a project of heroic proportions. Bare piano bones support overlaying twinkles that find themselves flattened by crashing percussion. A message about fuel consumption and environmentalism is written across the stage alongside the 2000 Polaroid images taken for this single. They may not care that one of their number’s head is bleeding or that their music makes me feel so recklessly invincible but 65daysofstatic are an honest, intelligent band. They’ve taken a risk and pieced together a master-show for this tour that summates everything the band so well. They formulate and execute grand ideas, all the while cementing and building upon their innovative place in Britain’s music scene.
An hour later, having given up on a bus ever arriving, favouring walking the less than pleasant East end streets home instead, I start to think that maybe these words and these images are over the top for a band. However if 65days are capable of sounding so joyously apocalyptic albeit just for the hour in which they own my ear drums, then it’s worth writing down. For this band are truly quite, quite special.
Saw them
on this tour in Newcastle
Simply awesome
well done
i've been trying to put this gig into words for days now. haven't been able to. you have done well.
Nice to see...
...you've converted so much to 65, Fiona.
YES
I think this band are incredible! I saw them a year ago, and my how far they've come. The images are an incredible backdrop to what is an apocalyptic ride of fantastic noise! I urge people to check it out, and get the limited edition 7" with individual polaroid, if there are even any left now...
did anyone
see the mirimar disaster supporting?
Ace band, disturbing visuals
65's visuals were amazing though
mirimar disaster
were great in newcastle
Just how
the drummer keeps going all the way through the set without his arms falling off, I'll never know.
Gods
Surely it was Dionysus who was the god of music and alcohol?
them being myths
you can make up what the fuck you want really
but no, apollo was the god of music - he directed the choir of muses innit.
i was under the impression the dionysus was the pisshead though, and he did theatre i seem to recall.
guess it depends on what you read. anyway...
yeah,
...this review's got it the wrong way round.
Dionysus embraced the now: drunkeness, catharsis, music, cruelty and passion. Appollo was concerned with the visual arts, restraint, plesaure and being in control.
Yes
...yes it was.
