Having never set foot inside Southend's Chimmery's, I was a bit dubious as to what to expect. I had a fair idea that the majority of the crowd would be made up of a mediocre local support band's friends and family, and a remaining few interested punters would stay for Manchester's (Exeter's!?) Haven.

As it goes I wasn't far wrong and Haven did very little to prove they were worth much more. The performance itself gave a strong case of a band perhaps expecting slightly more (weren't we all...), and so could not be bothered, leaving the night with an unsettling degree of MOR.

For a band who have released single 'Beautiful Thing' and the forthcoming album, both produced by Smiths' legend Johnny Marr, you'd have expected a bit more of an effort all round.

The sound of Haven is nothing out of the ordinary...a typical indie 4 piece, warm guitars, emotive lyricism in a fairly stripped back indie fashion. It's not pop, it's NAM with electric guitars. What makes the band is Briggs' Buckley vibrato voice, one which lifts the songs simply but effectively. My friend pointed out that they sound like a sub standard Hurricane #1, which is obviously a touch harsh, but you could see where she was coming from. Other than the unreleased 'Out Of Reach' and set closer 'Let It Live' (a pyschadelic guitar work out with sweet high pitched vocals) we only had the two singles to tide us over in terms of decent tuneage.

It is disappointing because I was really looking forward to seeing Haven live. Debut single 'Til The End' is a classic, and so the band obviously have the talent to take themselves those few steps further.

For a toilet venue tour, Haven need to pull their socks up and play as if it were their last, for at present they are merely playing to that dwindling clique.
