You can't help feeling a little sympathetic for the artists concerned when those palputations for nostalgia kick in. Two nights ago an-admittedly-different-to-the-one-from-their-heyday incarnation of a band (who shall remain nameless for the purpose of this piece) from the same era as The Lemonheads, with a back catalogue to die for, played possibly the worst show I've ever had the misfortune to witness in all my years of watching live bands. So, the omens weren't particularly good for this evening.

Sadly, the majority of Nottingham's public must have felt the same way, as the venue seemed to be less than half-full when Evan Dando and The Lemonheads 2006 model took to the stage, but if any of those missing persons are of a rueful nature, they'll probably be kicking themselves black and blue. This really was the setlist from heaven if you're a Lemonheads fan.

Okay, so there may have been no 'I Am A Rabbit' - my personal favourite from the dozens in Dando's songbook - but everything else you could have wanted, whatever era most appeals to you about this band, was there in full fettle.

'Hate Your Friends', 'The Great Big No', 'Confetti', 'Rudderless' - you name it, they played it. More to the point, the newer stuff actually fitted within the set quite comfortably, probably due to the fact that it has a certain late-'80s, pre-grunge feel about it.

Whilst not entirely relevant to most of today's glo-stick waving, leggings-wearing scenester kids, any aspiring young band would do well to check Dando and co. out - despite age not being on their side any more, passion, exuberance and unforboding energy is still omnipresent throughout. As celebrations go this one may have been a bit depleted personnel-wise, but at times it still felt like the best reunion party in the world, ever. Now go see for yourselves...

Went to the leeds gig...

And it was pant wettingly good.
Though I don't think Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson are touring with Evan Dando currently. I believe they just play on the record

No

they're definitely touring with him.

Correction

Can assure you that Karl and Bill are NOT playing on the tour with Evan, as the original comment stated they just played on the album.

Evan's current touring band is Devon Ashley (drums) and Vess Ruhtenberg (bass) of The Pieces.

Leeds was

excellent. Evan Dando has got the most natural (its not at all forced) voice i've ever heard live.

I stand corrected.

Was led to believe by the management on arriving at the venue that Stevenson and Alvarez were playing with Dando. Maybe the ever-changing line-up of the Lemonheads took its toll on them too?
Anyway, the drummer was amazing.

Oh, and all is amended now.

Seeing the Bristol show this weekend

More than a little excited.

I did.........

some research post gig, and found the guys from the descendents are kinda old and one of them is fat, so are very different to the current line-up.
The new drummer is quality, like a human metronome!

I thought

Evan Dando had put a few pounds on though. He looked like a more pasty faced version of Mani to me.

He can inflate to the size of the Michelin Man

...as long as he plays everything I'd like to hear!

Ahhh, this irons out a good degree of confusion...

... so that was the decendents chap who played drums for him at shepherd's bush empire for the don't look back show last year? he was fucking awful. i felt really let down by the lumpen playing from the band that night - his solo bit was the highlight by far. however, the other night they were on fire, really tight (dando's guitar solos aside! bless him) and impressive. the new drummer really is an awesome machine.

Yeah

it does when their own tour manager thinks the drummer is Bill Stevenson from the Descendants!
