Where to begin with Animal Collective? In a word, they’re brilliant. The blissed-out Baltimore four-piece offer a kind of inverted prog with the emphasis on unfettered creativity rather than musicianship. Surprising, then, that as this evening’s festivities roll around to the main attraction, they more accurately resemble a flailing Beastie Boys circa 1986, what with their jauntily-angled baseball caps and garish get-ups. Alas, if only their set was so exuberant.
With a performance heavy on material from their fine-sounding new LP Strawberry Jam (due in September), it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where the band goes wrong. You could point to the absence of Deakin, but it’s more than that. I want them to make me feel like an excitable toddler pissing in the paddling pool, but I end up keeping a bored eye on the time for the last tube home. Songs drift non-commitally into each other, but where Noah Lennox's recent performances as Panda Bear have been a delirious deluge of tracks rolling into each other and out again, this evening it all seems to chug along a little too contentedly, even when the Lennox tracks get an airing.
Once in a while their abstracted pastoralism sends you tumbling through the void, like a startled animal falling through some leaf trap of the mind, but you could count these moments on one hand, even if you happen to be a Simpsons character. Of course, repetition is absolutely key to their schtick and would need to be a central feature of any of their live performances, but a little more goodwill is required than this, and if you’re going to construct a sound based on looping material the you’d better make sure you’ve got something worth looping in the first place.
At their best, Animal Collective are peerless innovators, making euphoric, circular music where others trade in clunking angles and chugging, linear progressions. Tonight, they’re merely solipsistic.
IT'S AS IF
you pulled the thoughts from my mind and just splashed them across the screen....BANG ON
Totally
echo the comment above. Spot on.
Also, The Coronet? Bleurgh, what a pit.
Did you actually go to the gig?
They didn't actually play ANYTHING off of the "fine-sounding new LP Strawberry Jam"
uhhh yeah, this^
also, they were fucking spectacular.
A REVIEW SO FAR BEHIND, IT THINK'S IT'S AT THE FRONT....
Amen to that Traz...Mr Reviewer, if you don't feel it, don't fake it...they didn't play no Strawberry Jam material foooool.
it was even better than that gig they played in the tiny Bethnal Green warehouse last summer...pure magic.....just one continuous blast of hazy-electro psychedelic pop. absolutely legendary...i will remember this gig forever....thanks boys. x

towards the end
.
and despite the sort of bummed out review, i still wish i could have gone yo it :(
Also
this gig persuaded me that I need to start wearing earplugs when I see bands. My hearing was off for days afterwards. Dunno if I blame the venue or the band (or both), but still; fucking hell.
christ, what a retarded review
fair enough if you weren't into it, it was quite a daring set. But, as has already been pointed out...they didn't play anything off the "fine-sounding new LP Strawberry Jam."
You're review suggests that you've heard Strawberry Jam, since you describe it as "fine sounding;" yet despite being familiar with the album, you reckon they played a lot of songs off it. Maybe a bit more attention and less looking at your watch.
i was thinking this
it was way too loud
They played a crapload of excellent
new
stuff

It was really really excellent.
I enjoyed it loads despite the immensely distracting pain in my feet
you can hear from the bootleg how good it was musically. The bass was incredible too.

'brother sport' is the one i wanted to hear again. that song is awesome... the second half espesh...
for the first 30mins
they were brilliant. then it did get a bit boring, and i left just before the end. i'd say 6/10
.
hey millionaire, thanks for that link.
i'm listening to it right now utterly shitfaced, and i like it a lot.
i love it when..
...people make stuff up to make themselves look informed and cool.
the gig was fantastic. and quite pleased with the final couplet of loch raven and leaf house. any one know the 3rd to last song they played? or have a bootleg???!?!?!?
seems like
this guy didnt know what to expect from an ac show. I love the way its like going to see a new band everytime you see them.
Uuuumm...
Alex, why do you seem to indicate that you are reviewing Animal Collective and Marnie Stern's performances...and then Marnie Stern is not mentioned anywhere in the actual review?
just
a peculiarity of the site which will hopefully be ironed out soon. only caught a couple of her songs, not enough for review anyway...soz!
