A few months ago they were supporting Nashville Pussy at The Garage; a little while later they sold out the Astoria just ahead of their first single release, 'Fat Lip'; now, playing at what should have been a support slot on the Blink 182 tour (which was subsequently cancelled), Sum 41 headline to a packed out Brixton Academy.

It's surprising how a relatively 'new' band (new to the UK that is) manage to play the Academy, which has recently had Placebo, Manic Street Preachers and Incubus grace it's stage. But these 4 lads have had a miraculously super-fast rise...and all because of one song. A one-hit wonder you may think. Think again. Soon to release their next single, 'In Too Deep', it is just as catchy as the first, and looks set to be just as popular.

With the majority of fan's 15 years old and under, the boyband likeness of these guys is obvious. But there is a distinct difference - Sum 41 can sing, dance, write great tunes, joke about and play their instruments, all amazingly well. It is most of these traits that are actually missing from the 'N Sync's and Backstreet's.

But let's not sit and dwell on that type of music.

The show tonight is full of strobing lights, manic fans and pure adrenalin. Calling up seven or so girls to play a game of Twister during the set as well as a superb drum solo from drummer Steve, the show is certainly entertaining. Some of the songs do tend to sound the same, but you tend to ignore that because the energy is so high. With the band jumping around and interacting with the crowd too, it is clear that Sum 41 put 110% into their gigs.

The songs are good and catchy. Although they are nothing really original, this doesn't matter; they are fun, they are having fun, and we're having fun. Great.
