Miss Bromley’s fans are indie kids. Indie kids in the classic c86 style. Sexless boys, feather boas, poor limb co-ordination, and an appreciation of (seemingly) harmless songs played nicely. They probably own all the Belle & Sebastian albums. This, however, is not necessarily a bad thing.

Okay, so they count a trumpet player and a violinist in their ranks but they actually do their thing so well it’s forgivable. To the casual strums of an acoustic guitar and some feyer than fey vocals we get many songs that actually make you want to do the lamentable “indie shuffle” dance.

New song The Army starts out sounding like a pisstake on local squaddies to the backing of a long lost Levellers tune. However, it turns out to be a satirical swipe at Vietnam and the once the chorus kicks in crusty hell is but a distant memory. Kinky Sex Party muses over wife swapping in the suburbs whilst old favourite Holiday still retains it’s catchy melody complete with trumpet riff, despite the often strained vocals (“aaaaiiiiiiii neeeeeeeeed a hollllllllllleeeedaaaaaay”).

So granted, Miss Bromley may not be the new Sex Pistols but their melodic and whimsical ways must be appreciated. At the very least they provide a welcome relief from their doubled over screeching contempories. And dare I say it, they do it with style and a degree of intelligence.
