Oh my, oh my….

First up tonight are Purple Munkie managed by DiS’ very own Adie Nunn. A music-industry heavy queue flows into the Castle (it’s not actually a castle, castle, more a bar with a backroom) and the sound pouring from the stage, from 4 barely-started-shaving Elgin boys is one with a lot of magic. And I ain’t just saying that. Some pixies'ish moments, but many a journey into dizzy, drunk on a mountain top, partying in the pit of a canyon pop-noise before they leave us, all smirks, excited, tingling with just enough self-belief to pull it off.

Now, some boys with torn off t-shirt sleeves, scruffy hair, kinda smelly-looking, as if they’ve been touring for weeks (cus they have) get onstage. What on earth is this music? Is this music? No. Actually, hang on, if this band were a cliché it’d be Elton John influencing a death metal band, doing orchestral, doing loud-as-fuck, with rambling, ranting, spitting of lyrics about sexual encounters, brawls and probably the drummers sweat’n’spunk oozing barbie wig. I guess that counts as music. Whatever. There really is no need for comparisons; this band make me want to put it in journo-hack fosters-fuelled pictures for you. These are fellow scots Lapsus Linguae currently 5 or so songs deep. They stop. Everyone looks bemused. They bash and roar. It breaks down to a piano solo for a minute and a half, sounding so gentle, poinant, life-changingly profound, and almost, beautiful. I said almost! The words are barbwire, a perfect contrast - perfect for art students and 4am philosphers anyway. The bassist is bouncing around in the crowd, slashing his weapon, and I mean weapon, menacingly. Dum, dum, dum, the bass chugs a bit like the fat monsters who’re talking on samples beneath everything in the numb seconds before they wash us in a sprawl of white noise that snows for what could be hours. It stops. That is it. Wow.

Time for a band I literally don’t shut up about. It's packed. Other peoples sweat is condensating on my face. Three Essex boys, not that you could tell, step up on the stage, half-coy, half-demented-hell-hound, the singer, a bit is-he, isn’t-he, whispers “good evening” and the world could be about to burn down outside but I’m not leaving for anyone. The riffs begin, bad and mock-metal. The opening line ”We are the Vaccinated!!!” dollops itself on the room still buzzing from Lapsus. The first chorus “I WANT TO BE YOUR CROOKED SEX!” and the rest my friends, is history. You missed it, man; it was amazing and exactly why I love music, especially new, boundary kicking stuff. These love songs, like Billy Corgan coulda or woulda packaged them up. Oh yeah, they’re a bit like System of a Down and other such good nu-metal bands too. But who gives two shits about nu-metal, most of it is all cartoony by bands who don't care what they write aslong as it's good enough for the black-clothes-only tweenie target market. Careerist fuckwads! These songs are so much more. I mean, find me another band who sum up EVERYTHING, all this sick stuff in our wannabe Californian, gotta have the best sneakers, eating disorder ridden, trust-no-one, drink chemicals, “you are shit, cus you eat shit”, moronicer than thou, ironic, dissatisfied, world around us. A world that we didn’t exactly choose to live in, but pay extortionate rent for all the same. Find me another band who rock as hard as this, so effortlessly. Especially a new band who don’t even have a record deal, who have a bassist with two broken fingers who gets up and gives it his all, all the same. 3 guys who actually, really, truly, fucken MEAN IT!

Engerica leave the stage tonight both loved and hated.

I leave the venue with the biggest grin since, fucking hell, I really don’t remember when. I’ll cherish this night for a long time – just hope my voice comes back sometime soon so I can tell more of the world about it.

Engerica + Lapsus Linguae + Purple Munkie - London Camden Dublin Castle

I missed Engerica due to being drunk.
Lapsus Linguae fucking rule.
So do Purple Munkie. Aye. ;)

I was scared for my life...

The lapsus linguae bassist charged at me...I was very scared but it was funny! I think you're giving engerica a bit too much lovin - they were definately lacking something and the singer loved himself a bit too much!

but ...

if you looked like *that*, wouldnt you love yourself, too?

Re: but ...

So men are reprimanded for their chauvinistic physical vs talent appreciation when it comes to female pop stars, whereas girls can ogle pretty boys and it's A-OK.

::growls:: Women are *so* shallow AND hypocritical!!! :)

Re: but ...

yeah, like, totally dale baby.

the more feminstic the ho, the more she wants to blow big jo rock the micro phones dick... i totally dont get it man. just cus i think a girls voice sounds sexy, i'm apparently oppressing her or she's exploiting my libido or some corporation is fucking this girl rotten cus she's pretty and has a sexy voice and that sells records. she's not getting fucked cus she's stunning and talentless. or even talented. no, it's cus of the boys who like to fondle themselves.

how many 12 year old boys would goto a, i dunno, shakira or britney concert? now, tell me, in this world of girl power, how many of them goto boyzone or backalley bandits shows? And why do they go? if it was about the music the crowd would be equally split in gender, in theory at least.

I'm gonna get so much shit now, none of it from blokes tho, obviously.

I believe in equality.

that is all

Engerica + Lapsus Linguae + Purple Munkie - London Camden Dublin Castle

Fantastic review. Absoultely captured the excitement I felt whilst watching Engerica, I don't think you CAN give them too much praise. Makes me want to go out and watch them again NOW. When are they playing next!? Make it now...

Re: Engerica + Lapsus Linguae + Purple Munkie - London Camden Dublin Castle

Engerica are SO bad!!! It's unreal. I mean, look at their pic you got hold of! What a bunch of gonks!

Deadbeat Radicals

Agree with most of that review, but there was a glaring omission.

Okay, so i've been guilty of this before but there were 4 acts that night not 3. Lapsus did not jump on the stage after Purple Monkey. They followed some 50 minutes later after the highly entertaining DEADBEAT RADICALS. Fair enough the industry whores left for the bar once PM finished but those who remained witnessed a fine performance from Bluefire Record's latest act.

Coming across as a hybrid of Republica and The Fighting Cocks they might not sound like the most promising prospect. Add to that the girls looking "very camden" (quote: Julia) in fishnets and fetish skirts and I can see why they wouldn't appeal to your average emo/rock kid (see: the other three bands). But if you like live drums layered on beats, crunchy guitars, a sense of pop fun, Rachel Stampesque synths, and some bewildering lyrical content then you might want to look them up.

top night overall.

Re: Deadbeat Radicals

I don't like slagging bands off. I thought they were terrible i couldn't listen to more than half me-feel-so-queazy a song....

shit, i just slagged them off. it's a comment, not editorial.

and i'm not average, ever.

Re: Deadbeat Radicals

in fact DREADFULLY camden ... and its not a 'glaring' omission cos if someone doesnt like a band, it might be better to just not review them at all than laying into them (hang on, who am i to say that, i always take great pleasure in trying to be as nasty as possible about bANDs ..i dont REALLY mean it though) ....

Re: Deadbeat Radicals

my mate hannah acutely observed that the singer of deadbeat radicals looks + dances like big bird.

Re: Deadbeat Radicals

Sharon doesn't look like Big Bird at all... bloody savages!

Re: Deadbeat Radicals

she might not look like big bird but they're still awful. the 20 seconds i saw was 20 seconds too much. i won't say anything about engerica. that can be found on my site.
