A conventional Thursday night would normally include brushing up on Jake & Lisa's latest exploits in Hollyoaks, feeding the rabbits and spending the rest of the evening submerged in 60 degrees centigrade of Radox scented hot water. Bliss. So imagine my utter state of perplexion when someone tells me Athlete are playing down the local. Yes. You heard it right. The very same bunch of people sitting astutely atop this week's album chart.

The last time this place held a throng so enthusiastically frenzied would probably have been last June. Graduation Day. But we've all been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, worn the hat... right?

Y'see, with Athlete, they aren't necessarily the most enthusiastic looking bunch of people. So when they take the stage, in an almost apologetic fashion, you could easily be forgiven for thinking you've just stumbled into "pub bands r us" night down the old student boozer.

Except the usual standard won't churn out an ecstatic 'Half Light', or the charismatic 'Yesterday Threw Everything At Me'; an interloping tale of Harley-esque (that's Steve, not plastic surgeons) wordplay that comes to life dramatically outside the confines of its concealed standing on their mostly inanimate numero uno album.

But being the humble souls they are - singing guitarist, Joel Pott, caustically reminds us on several occasions how reminiscent tonight's setting is of their humble beginnings - it's difficult to begrudge Athlete their current moment of glory. As a resounding 'You Got The Style' draws proceedings to a close, hearts rule minds and Athlete's coronation as the kings of sincerity is complete.

Athlete

heartwarming.

Re: Athlete

Ya wacky beatle...

Athlete

It's really fantastic that Athlete have stuck two fingers up at the British press that has constantly slammed them. Tourist is a beautiful LP and whatever anyone says about 'being rock 'n roll' or 'pushing back new musical boundaries' they prove there's no substitute for beautiful songs.

Carry on up the charts.
