The lights went down. The smoke blew out. The screams were deafening. And all you could see was the five of them standing shoulder to shoulder, illuminated only by the explosive click-flash of cameras.

There they were. Duran fucking Duran. Brilliant.

Kicking off their set with "Friends of Mine" from the debut, Simon le Bon, Nick Rhodes, Andy/John/Roger Taylors (still not related) slammed through a mix of hits and old school album cuts, sending the crowd into screaming hysterics and massive sing-alongs. The band was low on chat, packing hyper hits like "Planet Earth" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" near the front, cooling down midset with new songs "What Happens Tomorrow" and "Virus" before building back up with a storming "Wild Boys" and "Careless Memories."

"New Religion" returned to their live set after a long absence, and unlikely choice "Night Boat" managed to be just as penetrating and spooky live as on record.

Later-years Duran tunes were limited to "Come Undone," their cover of "White Lines," and comeback hit "Ordinary World," which revealed the difference between original guitarist Andy Taylor’s playing style and that of the departed Warren Cuccurullo. Taylor’s take on the riff was weak; making a great song merely good and providing the only real blemish on an otherwise excellent show.

Duran Duran have a 16-city tour planned next month in the U.S., followed in December by a supporting slot for Robbie Williams in Australia, where they haven't toured in 20 years. There are no further European gigs scheduled at this time.

GIRLS ON FILM

DID THEY PLAY 'GIRLS ON FILM' - SURELY THEIR FINEST WORK?

Re: GIRLS ON FILM

They did! They also played Rio and I think they dragged out Andy Hamilton for the sax solo.

Re: GIRLS ON FILM

OH MIGOD - that must have been spine-tinglingly good.

Sounds like they haven't lost their skilsl at all! Wicked.

Oh, and may I say John Taylor is the fucken MAN!

Re: GIRLS ON FILM

He is *SO* the fuckin' man. His bass was so amazing you could feel it through the floor. It made the intestines quiver. It was breathtaking. and he kept making Funky Bass Face all night.

He is so the fuckin' man that Simon had to give him a great big KISS!

Re: GIRLS ON FILM

80's tosh.....that quite frankly, should of been left in the 80's.

Boooooo !!!

Re: GIRLS ON FILM

No Dan, you are quite simply wrong.

Re: GIRLS ON FILM

Agreed. Dan, you live in error.

Re: GIRLS ON FILM

On a different note. I went to see Ginger on his Acoustic as Fuck tour recently. He covered Rio and Spandau Ballet's Musclebound.

Funniest thing I've seen in quite a while.
