First impressions matter in music – as they do in most other walks of life. In my preparation for Primavera, half a minute of each and every act’s MySpace was enough to point me in, if not the right direction, then one of the best directions I’d ever followed at a festival.
Somehow, I’d never heard Kate Nash before today and first impressions are fine – twinkle-toed, ballet hall piano moves through pre-laid footfall, ‘Vicious’ guitar fizzes gently somewhere in the background and Nash's LDN throat is proper good company as the song builds through verse, bridge and chorus to its sour conclusion. It’s brilliant, well-crafted bubblegum pop – Lily’s chuggy clinging to a natty seat cover on Jamie’s ‘Northern Line’ or Jack handing his last stick to Adele. ‘Foundations’ is at once as familiar as your hometown’s twilight economy and as memorable as your teenage bedroom.
Much of the charm of the ‘LDN sound’ – I attempt to build no scene, but there is a ‘sound’, that much is undeniable – lays in the honest dialect refreshing charts stunk out and clouded by slick, stultifying R’n’B. This town’s sound is maturing into ubiquity, and it’s become possible to plot bloodlines horizontally; brothers, sisters, contemporaries, cousins all paddling in the same stretch of Thames.

It pays to keep thinking, ‘cause what is this, really? Surely not just a blank cheque and a handshake for anyone with an Oyster and a friendly accent? Course, course, there’s credit due today for a girl that pre-dated Lily. But by the same token, Nash has been around too long not to know what she's playing at – here, at least, it’s route one, aiming for an empathy so plain that ‘Foundations’ bypasses the parts of your brain that think and heads straight for the memory cells. The territory it stalks is known; like the walk home from that hometown, twilight economy is known by the sore soles of your achy feet.
Thing is, bright-light streets are proper well tread at the moment, and you feel that the cracks in capital pavements are only going to widen. As tasty as this bubblegum used to be, it won’t glue those cracks for long. LonDoNe! Back to your bedroom. The air outside is growing close; the clouds are full of strife.
DiSclaimer: as a bad band once sang, “the good will out”. You know the same can be said for this crop. Half a minute’s listening is all it takes to figure the ‘whos’ from the ‘who?’s.

I'm not a fan of lily allen and can definitely see the comparisons here. But there's something about her voice that really appeals- kinda fragile or something. And I love the pianos. Also she is very fit.

Who cares about lily allen, lily was good for about a week, as all popular music seems to be designed to be at the moment.
I like Kate Nash, yeah she isn't grown breaking or exciting, but at least she is fun, foundations is cute, the video is funny and for the average confused love-struck 20 year old it's just what it is. Caroline is a Victim got loads of criticism, but it was such a piss-take song, that who really took it seriously. does pop music have to be taken seriously. I love rihanna's umbrella but still love post-rock and noise... god get a grip.
Marketing is just marketing, and kate is only getting pushed along with it.

Having first heard this song on the millions of myspace 'scene girls', i totally ignored it, as I was stubborn enough to listen to a girl scenster anthem if you like. But hearing it properly the 2nd time was live on 'Later...With Jools Holland', Kate Nash delivers a fantastic performance of this song, which really grabbed my attention now.
Despite the admiration, girls have for this song, it is a brilliantly composed song with the whitty lyrics and vocal style, for me showing a good competition against the popular Lily Allen.
The song is really simple, very catchy and also very cute, with her presentation in person looking very cute, innocent, yet with a streak of this admirable attitude as well, which really does represent her and her music brilliantly.
Personally a good song and an amazing young lady, Foundations is one of them crooning songs that many girls could probably relate to, explaining really the amount of times i see this song on a myspace profile of a girl. Brilliant song!

the musical backing, but the lyrics and vocal delivery during the lily allen/mike skinner bits are a bit done to death. Stick to singing. If it was all singing I'd give it an 8 but at the moment the cringe bits justify an average 5.

the only time I hear this god-awful shite is when I'm listening to the radio whilst driving around in my work car....this song has the dubious distinction of making me want to plough into large, fast-moving vehicles....credit where credits due though, on this effort Nash makes the trash that is Lily Allen seem somewhat more talented....quite the feat.
