The Shins: Turn On Me

The Shins’ latest standalone offering from their successful Wincing The Night Away is undoubtedly one of its parent record’s sweetest moments. ‘Turn On Me’ is classic stuff from the four-piece: instantly recognisable as the product of said architects, and melody rich like the very best indie-pop should be. Sure, it’s not the sort of song to make a man fall clean off their chair in surprise, ears electric; it could, if we’re being honest, be considered rather mundane. But that’s the charm of The Shins, really. Their music’s never part of a particular zeitgeist, nor is it a faithful follower of fashion. It just is.

And this approach continues to serve them well – single three from album three and it’s all smooth running, ticking-over sales and acclaim from the right corners of the music press, a few less-than-brilliant live performances of late excepted. ‘Turn On Me’ also features the band’s theme tune to semi-popular US programme Weeds as a b-side, a move that’s sure to have fans clamouring to own the 10” version of this release. Also included is their take on Pink Floyd’s ‘Breathe’, which rounds off a package that’ll bring a warm smile to the face of your average fan.

With one million sales behind them already, The Shins’ trajectory is maintaining an upward arc. The sole sour note about this latest release is an echo of an earlier sentiment: this really isn’t anything all that remarkable in terms of their overall canon, and there was something about Wincing The Night Away that conveyed a sense that the band perhaps isn’t challenging itself to up the ante considerably. Should album four be more of the same, even the faithful may be tested. But, for now, The Shins can do little wrong, though James Mercer and company could try a little harder on stage from time to time. ‘Kay?

I don't understand...

...the constant complaints about the latest Shins album. As far as I'm concerned it's their best yet, and with songs like 'Sea Legs' (which sounds like Beck) and 'Red Rabbits' they really have 'upped the ante'.

I don't really know what people want from them. Seriously- someone explain it to me.

I've got to say I agree

This isn't a slight on the above review, but what's with all the Shins hating recently? It's not quite as strong overall as Chutes... but Wincing... is still a damn fine record. And, each to their own, this is a band who can send shivers down my spine like few others.

Could it, by any chance...

...be a touch of inverse snobbery now that they have attained undreamed-of commercial success?

'Oh Inverted World' is still regarded by many to be their best record, and I suspect that this may be because of it's lo-fi, indie feel and slightly ropey production values, rather than in spite of it.

To be fair it does contain 'New Slang' and 'Caring Is Creepy', which are two of the most astonishing songs I've ever heard, but I reckon 'Saint Simon' and 'Phantom Limb' are in the same league as those.

Interesting that that album has retained it's indie credibility despite the 'Garden State' stuff.

Or perhaps the relatively lukewarm reception amongst long-time admirers is due to Mercer's involvement with Gap and McDonalds?

All that there...

I'm going to buy it. Roll on No4. Tho' it'll probably be another 3 year wait at least...

Get the finger out, lads.

The Shins and McDonalds

The Shins getting a song used by McDonalds that includes the lines:
"New Slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries"
and
"Godspeed all the bakers at dawn, may they all cut their thumbs and bleed into their buns"

makes them pretty fucking awesome in my book.

This is possibly my favourite Shins song

Howver I think the album it's from is the wors they've put out. Still pretty good though...

got in trouble this week

for saying this is a shit record. Can I be controversial FOR A CHANGE?!

i think

the albums really underrated, 'red rabbits' is goooooooorrrgeous, this on the other hand is one of the more shins-by-numbers (still better than razorlight-by-numbers) tracks, 7's about right methinks
