"My Vitriol release what MUST be the last single to be purged from their fine debut long player 'Finelines', because I'm not sure they could avoid being branded rip off merchants if they were to release any more after this." James Jam, March 2001.

It’s the age old tactic of re-releasing an album in brand new packaging except in this case they’ve re-recorded some of it as well with a producer associated with Guns ‘N’ Roses, Korn and Metallica. It’s a disappointment. My Vitriol’s ‘Always: Your Way’ is now in it’s fourth incarnation having become more and more drawn out and the vocals more sinuous, but less frenetic. Does it really sound that different to what was released in April of last year? No.

The band decided to re-record parts of the album for American release. Is the sound for Britain not saleable in the US? Was a new producer required to make it sound heavier? That’s called selling out in some people’s books. Maybe it is the case that the album wasn’t as perfect as was intended, but that’s why bands make a second album - to improve on their previous effort. Questions will, of course, be asked as to their record label’s involvement in this decision, but to what extent has the band been held to ransom?

A dividend, perhaps, is the second disc included. It includes all the b-sides of their Infectious single releases saving the non-completists the bother of having to purchase every last single but maybe forcing the most dedicated fans to make this purchase. This collection of b-sides showcases beautifully the quality of their “other songs” with ‘Deadlines’ and their acoustic efforts highlighting their excellence. These could be more than just album tracks. Their skill at “Vitriolising” other people’s songs is demonstrated superbly during the majestically abrasive cover of Madonna’s once gracious, ‘Oh Father’ while the previously serrated ‘Static’ by Jawbox inherits the ethereal splendour that has trademarked My Vitriol.

If this release was purely a label decision then one might ponder the consequences of a budget wasted upon re-recording a perfectly good album. Maybe if more time and money was invested in developing new songs then the complaints at the same live sets as two years ago would not be so rife. It doesn’t matter if you make the cover a different colour and change the name slightly - it’s the same record you released 16 months ago.

bothers me

Yeah it really pisses me off when bands take a perfectly fine album and then get it all redone to suit the american market...i am not a fan of my vitriol nor lost prophets (who played a simmilar trick) but both their albums needed no "americanism" added to it...its like bands realesing a greatest hits album three years into their career..a money grabbing scheme..

Re: bothers me

i think the LostProphets one was their new label's doing - and the original was much better than the pish + slightly 'remixed' rereleased one in the flashy blue cd case..

considering how much the MV album [and things related to it] cost their label in total, though, i'm not too surprised theyre still trying to eek out all the cash they can from the kids ;)

money grabbing it is..

Re: bothers me

It was a label decsion and a crap one at that, MV said they didn't want to do it and wanted to move on to the second album. What bothers me is how infectious were thinking, i mean the backlash for something like this can be worse than the extra popularity a band may get from it. The best bet would have been just to do a release in the US and keep quiet about it over here. Now everyone thinks they are money grabbing sell outs. Record labels really are shitheads at times.

Re: bothers me

Originally booked to play the larger 1500 capacity MDH in Manchester, My Vitriol were downgraded to the 400 capacity Hop&Grape due to poor ticket sales.
Why?
Because their fanbase isn't large enough? Nope.
Because they're in the worst form of their life? Nope.
Because they've played the same songs for over 2 years? Yes.
Because nobody likes a sellout band? Yes.

*round of appluse*

Very well said :D

Re: *round of appluse*

I've just seen them, I nearly cried...I've never been so dissapointed in a band, all the 'magic's' totally gone...sod the American market *cries*

Re: *round of appluse*

The magic isn't gone, it's just the same magic you've seen 45738498365738 times before.

Time for some new tricks etc etc

My Vitriol - Finelines/Between The Lines

MV really need to shape up. There's absolutley no point to this. Everyone would far prefer them to have used this wasted time working on their new album to make it a perfection.

My Vitriol - Finelines / Between The Lines

It didn't even reach the Top 75
Being beaten by Claire Sweeney is *not* someting to be proud of

Re: My Vitriol - Finelines / Between The Lines

Er. Who cares!
The band sent me an email saying not to buy it. So I didn't, and most people didn't.
Seeing as you care about the charts, Mr, they went in A LOT higher than our lovely crippley post-grunge Kerrang cover-stars Silverchair's new CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED piece of crap 'Diorama'.

Re: My Vitriol - Finelines / Between The Lines

Nah. Silverchair beat them by about 5 places I'm afraid. I've never seen the point in disregarding the charts. Most of the people that disregard things are jumped up fools who need to get over themselves.
