Despite discovering this record several months after release, I'm reviewing it now, because it
really warrants shouting about.
'Square' sits somewhere between
Tom Waits and the musical jazzy darker beats of
Mo'Wax. The album is divided up into four tracks, Square one to four, and runs more like a one long moody soundtrack. The words are worth listening to once, then twice, worth absorbing, storytelling, thoughts and observations. There's not a Gangsta in sight, as befits a guy hailing from Nova Scotia, but what there is is a certain bleakness, a certain travellers drift, the sad dreamy feel of
Jim Jarmusch's
'Dead Man'. In terms of a mental trip, this reminds me a bit of listening to
Maxi Jazz on the first two
Faithless albums, though the music is very different, the diversity on offer makes listening to
'Square' feel like a huge trancontinental train journey. A
Class record.
