Much like Beagle 2 being captured by the little green men on Mars and drop-kicked mercilessly into a giant crater, Franz Ferdinand have suffered a terrible early fate; the hype machine’s got them. Expectations for this, their debut full-lengther, have now reached boiling point. And expectations, let me tell you, can be bad things indeed. We’re only going to add to that. Sorry.

The word “crap” will definitely not be used in this review (apart from there, just a second ago), but neither will the word “outstanding” (apart from right there. Oh and perhaps when describing ‘Take Me Out’ and ‘Darts of Pleasure’. That’s that sorted, then). Whereas the initial spin of ‘Franz Ferdinand’ forced this reviewer to slump against the wall and proclaim “is this it?” (that’s the obligatory Strokes reference out of the way), repeated plays reveal something deeper. Must. Get. Tunes. Out. Of. Head.
Argh.

Delving in: ‘Tell Her Tonight’ is a Talking Heads and Roxy Music pastiche if there ever was one, with the added bonus of it not having the infinitely punchable Bryan Ferry on vocals. It’s one of the more instant tracks, along with ‘Cheating On You’, which would do exactly as it says on the tin, if the tin read “stupid, disposable, effortless short song with incredible mosh potential. Special offer – 16p.” It is, of course, great, and with its simple riff it’s an example of one of Franz Ferdinand’s strong points.

They have more. As well as giving a knowing nod to the appeal of ‘pop’, they haven’t just filled the album with ‘Darts Of Pleasure’ 11 times over. In ‘Auf Acshe’ and opener ‘Jacqueline’, a burning intro builds into something funky and powerful. Closing with ‘40ft’, they’ve crafted a song which would happily sit in a horror movie as much as it would in an (spit!) indie disco.

There are also more singles in waiting here, you betcha. ‘Michael’ (“so sssexy, I’m sssexy” - coo!) and ‘Come On Home’ (fuck, this is a good song) are the most instantly likeable since ‘Take Me Out’ sprung out of nowhere onto the nation’s airwaves, TV screens, and record collections.

Piece everything together and this is where your mouth might, quite rightly, start to drool a little. This is only the beginning and it’s a bloody good start. So if you’re one of The Kids currently finding Franz Ferdinand the most exciting band in aeons, there’s only one thing left to say:

As you were.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Well, you surprised me - I've got say I was expecting to see some serious 5/5 slobbering when I opened this page...

It's just kind of nice to see a reasonable balanced Franz Ferdinand review. I think this might be the first one I've seen, so well done :)

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Heard the album. They're the British Strokes. Review is pretty accurate. Not bad... Not great.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Yeah, great balanced review.

i must admit after telling everyone they were the best band of the planet, i've been regretting it (actually, i always regret telling people that about bands, i should really stop it...).

despite all my instincts to now hate them; they're still a great band.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Yes I agree that are a great bland!

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Cant wait for the album, quality review, total Appetite whetting action

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

i cant wait to see all the band wagon hitchers all dressing like them to be "individual"

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Bryan Ferry may be punchable, but I reckon the first Roxy LP might deserve a 'Classic' article...

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

From the 5 or 6 songs i've heard, they're a good band, but as you quite rightly acknowledge, not a great one. F**k knows why they're being hyped so much? Ok, call me f**k: It's because the Britich 'indie scene is crying out for a new Stones, Jam, Roses, Oasis etc... and right now they ain't got one.

But it'll happen.

...soon.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Its been ages since a British pop band of any quality (i.e. not coldplay or the stereophonics) have had the potential to be chart stars. i mean as much as i love b+s, alfie etc they don't have the image to be massive do they? i think thats why the nme have latched onto them because they no by sticking them on the cover they will sell copies to non 'indie kids'. they also sound horribly like pulp, especially the lyrics, and we all miss pulp dont we?!?! well i do :)

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

The deeper one delves, the duller it becomes. Songs are little more than riffs; passable ideas that have been asked to shoulder too much weight. A third generation derivation, a copy of a copy, is hardly the firmest ground on which to pitch your hopes of the future.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Yeh, but rock can't produce anything new, cos it is narrow-minded. Theres only so much you can do with a guitar, bass and drums. It might sound like an old style, bu if the old stuff was good anyway, whats the prob.?

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

I'd disagree that you can only do so much with the standard guitar / bass / drums setup. Look at Slint, for example - no overdubs, no effects, yet still totally unlike any other band of their composition. Likewise look at the signature sound of someone like Sonic Youth or Television - all it takes to produce something different is a bit of imagination. In theory the possibilities are limitless.

However, I agree that by and large "rock" is a narrow-minded beast, and I feel that's probably its main obstruction. I don't really think there's anything wrong with people wearing their influences on their sleeves, either; there's an important difference, though, between heavy influence and pastiche, and I think Franz straddle that line a little to readily sometimes.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Pfft... Television. Someone everyone's supposed to like but no-one does.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Television are fucking great. Go buy Marquee Moon!

Also glad to spot the talking Heads reference in the review. Its pretty obvious Talking Heads are a big influence, but this is the first time its showed up in a review I've seen.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Yeah talking haeds are a big influence, thats my point exactly! Whats the point in going where has already been tread, by a much bigger man with fancier footwork.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

the ltd edition copy..
how ltd is it? is every copy a 'ltd edition'?
just wondering...

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Just purchased the album and it does seem painfully average at the moment, a few class tracks but quite a few fillers, hopefully it will be a grower anyway.
Got the ltd. edition too, maybe they'll stop producing them in a month or so? Only £1 extra though so credit to the label for putting that out too...

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

they probably call the 'talkin' heeds.

No mention of The Dark Of The Matinee?

For me, The Dark Of The Matinee is the highlight of the album, catchy tune, good lyrics, perhaps the surprise hit from the album (As mentioned, Take Me Out/Come On Home/Michael/Darts Of Pleasure are the more obvious choices.)

I saw them supporting Belle and Sebastian in Liverpool just before christmas, they were well received and a good live act. Their recently announced tour is all but sold out. Everyone is singing their praises. Fortunately, they are as good as the hype (Just about, and for at least this week.)

You should check out their album, well worth buying.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

sounds a little like hot hot heat on some songs, don'tcha think?

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

i do. and the talking heads. and gang of four. actually, i dont think they sound anything like the gang of 4, but they should.

i went to buy the album today, but decided not to. my favourite franz song was already on the bside to take me out. so i'll wait till i've listened to everyone elses copy and got fed up with them.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Just had my first listen. Fair review.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

20-somethings? The lead singer Alex Huntley is about 35.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

he don't look it....

i'm aware he's been in various weegie bands for years, though.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

hey does it matter how old they are. They are so cool and make gd music therefor age doesnt matter There are loadsa bands that are wel over 40 and still making gd music that a lot of people like

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

i completely agree - i've just read the Fall live review and Mark E, no matter how old he is (or looks) his lyrical/rambling dexterity will probably always be greater than most attempting to mount his throne.

by the way, anybody heard the midweeks for the album charts re: Franz? not that it really matters in the end, but it should be interesting all the same...

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

never seem to hear of album chart midweeks, sorry.

age thing though is kinda bollocks, yes, but the music industry seems to have this 'thing' about NEW baads whose members are over the age of 25.

the darkness are, of course, exempt from every music industry rule book going.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

<<the darkness are, of course, exempt from every music industry rule book going.>>

Yeah, like the one that suggests your music shouldn't be a festering pile of shite?

Ba-ZING!

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Good review - the album is astoundingly good the first time you hear it, but fades thereafter to merely above average. Their live act is another story entirely, as anyone who saw them play as part of the recent NME Awards Tour will testify.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

I thought the opposite.
didn't like it at first, then loved it

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

one of the best reviews ive seen of this particular album.
i was just about to post my own review of the album, but my computer crashed, and i cant be bothered to write it again. i liked it the first time i heard it and now it sort of drags after a few listens.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Don't get me wrong, it's a good album and that, but why did they insist in recording 'Tell Her Tonight' in Mono?
These guys are obviously not perfectionists when it comes to recording, and that does worry me somewhat.

Re: Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Come on... Franz Ferdinand suck

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

The backlash starts here folks!
