I saw them back in the mid-nineties when they first entered Britain on the back of the Korn “Life Is Peachy” tour, when they were but talented teens experimenting with Primus and Chili Peppers odds and ends; I’ve been a keen follower ever since, as a stern believer that they’ve transcended their peers by offering an optimistic but rocking alternative to the mainstream metal pity-wallowers of the last decade.
But how can a band who preaches unity, joy, spiritual awareness and mirth survive integrity-destroying acts like kicking out their friend/bass-player/founding member Dirk Lance or trying to sue Sony? OK, Incubus has always been a pretty commercial outfit aspiring to be internationally enormous, and it’s never bothered me. I’ve dealt with the dream-hunk photo shoots and catwalk videos. Jealousy is not a valid foundation for dislike. But for me, kicking out Dirk means they’ve potentially sacrificed a lot of their kudos. Have the ethics of Incubus been forsaken?
'A Crow Left Of The Murder' is a fucking massive landmark for the band. There’s a lot riding on it. They’re all set up for a fall. But the album is good. And here’s why:
'Morning View' was as pop-metal as could be achieved without slipping onto the business-end of being cheesy. Rather than just continue the formula down the line, Incubus have morphed and progressed. This album is a real departure, a real leap from the old days. Although it may sit uneasily at first, the heavy guitars are pretty much gone – and this is a fucking great move. Replacing the RAWK-ness is an earthy, twangy, garage rock sound. This gives the band a lot more space and a beautiful organic quality. There’s a lot of surf-pop energy to it, which has not been adequately captured before.
This album will make you dance. Songs like 'Pistola' and 'A Crow Left Of The Murder' have the big pop appeal of Blondie crossed with the rocking energy of Rival Schools. It’s endearing – a magical superpop band with those heart-wrenching choruses you love, and the fast-paced uplift of a great underground rock band that only you and your bestest friends know about. That’s something really special. Smiles, tears and laughter guaranteed.
Brandon Boyd's a little more outspoken these days, much to his credit. In a typically spiritual/Utopian/downright hippyish camouflage, there are even inklings of a political edge to songs like 'Made For A TV Movie', as Brandon ushers forth ideas concerning the ridiculousness of blowing people up as if the war was just a movie. Ever thought-provoking and intellectually stimulating, it seems, conjuring up memories of that day when we all woke up to the sound of “Ladies and gentlemen… uh… we got him!” etc. Undercover mockery of the American president by an American? And I thought there was no political left out there.
The rhythms, the bubbling, they sit so tight. This album is electric, and in an uncomfortable way, stunning. Brandon’s voice soars, the melodies now more obscure and daring, while Chris Kilmore and Mike Einziger provide a wholly unique sample/guitar combination, totally individual to Incubus, and exhilarating too. The loss of Dirk Lance is noticeable, but in no way does it detract from the album. Gone are the playschool drum n bass thrusts of Incubus’ formative years, and in are exciting rock grooves and dance-thumps. There is a new Incubus, surpassing expectation, breaking hearts, rocking hard, very much alive.

'Nuff said.
Re: Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
The review referred to the album's 'organic quality' and it was right to do so. At times the sound is reminiscent of the Seattle grunge scene. Perhaps though with Brendan O'Brian behind the mixing desk this was only to be expected?
Title track 'A Crow Left of The Murder' itself calls to mind Pearl Jam's 'Rearviewmirror', while the long instrumental section of 'Sick Sad Little World' sounds like Pearl Jam er 'jamming' with The Mars Volta! There is certainly a retro 'loose' feel to the record. On 'Priceless' Mike Einziger's playing is just that, as he solos frantically and his guitars wah and wail Thayil-like.
Unlike 'Start Something', 'A Crow's...' appeal is not instant. It grows with (required) repeated listens. With the exception of 'Megalomaniac' there are no obvious singles here. It's a brave record by the band, completely different sounding to anything they've done before. If their audience are prepared to 'grow' with them they'll survive this record. If not....
Now, if only AUDIOVENT got half of INCUBUS' press they'd be household names too!
Re: Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
I never listened to Morning View more than a few times.
I don't ever seem to have time for albums that grow on you, I'm very much an instant hit listener I guess.
Whether that is a good or bad thing I don't know...

Then bought Make yourself, loved that too.
Then Morning View just wrecked it all for me I guess...

i really like incubus.. i saw them a zillion years ago at the borderline and they were utterly amazing.
and so onto incubus circa 2004...
morning view had some magical moment & it's all gone downhill. i prefer a crow... to morning view, though. but still. oh dear.
Re: Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
btw, with all that wanking, you need to take breaks, or you'll strain something.

Admittedly, this is one of their better efforts. But that's only compared to the utterly dismal Faith No More/Chili Peppers rip-offs they started their career with.

Before i start even though ive given this album a score, this isnt a review its a recommendation and a comment the stars just my attempt to put it in perspective.
I heard megalomaniac on totp and i was shocked. Firstly i didnt realise they were up to anything at the moment and secondly they rock again.
The second is the most important factor for me, i enjoyed s.c.i.e.n.c.e and Make Yourself, but thought the Morning View stuff was a bit too samey and slightly dull. Sure theres nothing wrong with slow or laid back albums, but i couldnt find a spark that appealed to me with that one - similar (but not as big) as the let down i got when i heard By The Way by RHCP. I was further dissappointed when i saw them play the Leeds Festival in support of said record, the energy just seemed to have drained away. Personally i thought the band was spent especially after the bass player left.
However this new one is like a breath of fresh air and it strikes a balance perfectly between laid back moments, rock, soft melodys that climb that little bit higher than they used to and some of those cool breakdowns that served no real purpose other than sounding mind bending. All with a sense that the band have progressed yet again, while retaining the elements that made them so ear-catching to start with.
A Crow Left Of The Murder has restored my Incubus fan-hood - check it out its great and will deffinately blow away those winter blues.

Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
Interestingly enough, when I first listened to it, I had recieved a slap in the face. although not fully stretching in style, the album itself is something completely different (something as we know human nature shuns from almost instinctively) in a similar way to other albums such as "By the way" was for the chilli peppers. It struck me as being alot darker and this really comes across in the vocals. For this album to be appreciated, it must be entered into with an open mind (which as we know is a hard thing to do) and re-played several times.
The best thing about this record is that incubus have cut themselves off the pop/rock sound (which i consider to be wanky, see modern day U2 and of course the EVIL and dreaded Limp Bizkit) and have gone off into a different direction. This movement I think will offend some of the Mourning view teen fans who were expecting more pop, but subsiquently earn the band at least some respect through this movement away from the style of their last albums...
It is a decent album that i think need time to take in... And in response to the comment before that it has no stand-out hits, I remember Robert Plant say in the recent Led Zepplin DVD that he did not like to release singles because he wanted the whole album to be appreciated, not just one song. In this way i say that sometimes there is a need for all the songs to reach a certain level. Not some brilliant, then some absoulutely shit. Which i think this album reaches like "By the Way," however they still have a while till they become a Led Zepplin...

Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
I don't mind the lack of heaviness - that's been happening since Drive, and it ain't gonna change. But where's the passion? There's no life to any of these songs. It sounds like it was written and recorded in their sleep.
Wank. Soulless, lifeless wank.

Oh come on people, just admit it, its brilliant, sheer brilliance.
and another thing, who the f*** listens to Lostprophets and Incubus at the same time? Lostprophets should have been axed before they even started, I dont know how anyone can have the balls to compare the crap coming out of the mouths of Lostprophets the the brilliance of Incubus..

Incubus fucking rock! Full stop - period!
Re: Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
incubus
there seems to be two sides to incubus; theres the rock-out-loud side with science, and make yourself (love both) and the more sensitive with morning view (also love) and they seem to have created two different fan bases...
personally, i'm not really impressed with a crow left of the murder, its got all the elements there to make it a great album but somehow it just doesn't quite hit the mark for me. i'm trying to give it a fair chance to grow on me though so watch this space...
Crow..
Is just a good, decent, solid album, with some nice little guitar moments, some really good choruses, esp Pistola, and nice tunes.
They have one of the coolest bass players around today: all hail Ben Kenney, ex guitarist with The Roots (they're a rap band, kids, that's right, a rap *band* - more of a band than the processed MTV shite you hear infecting the airwaves), and he brings it some real class.
Having never liked any Incubus before (back when I was a proper metalhead, lol ) I was pleasantly surprised to hear such a decent album. Best album ever? Bollocks. Mate, you need to listen to the Beatles, or perhaps John Coltrane. But I digress.
Wholly acceptable modern rock, with some cool lyrics, but not earth shatteringly profound; interesting guitar work, if rather obvious in it's influences (bit of Tom Verlaine, bit of MC5, bit of Tom Morello, bit of Hendrix). Overall, I was reminded of Audioslave (they sound like Rage, he sounds like Chris Cornell some of the time).
