Rock and roll is dead.

To be precise, it died 10 years ago this April, if the blanket coverage of Kurt's passing is to be taken as gospel. Such occasions prompt debatable question: what part did Courtney play in the whole thing? Was it really suicide? More importantly, where would Nirvana have gone, creatively, post-In Utero? If they'd have produced something half as good as 'Penance Soiree' they'd have been onto a career-destroying winner.

The phoenix from the still-warm ashes.

The Icarus Line don't have a pretty album in them. Whatever requests their new label may have made of them, they've not delivered, unless said requests were for a scuzzed-up, punk rock drone behemoth. The signs were there - as bright as the Blackpool illuminations - in that single, which opens proceedings here. Kurt wanted 'Rape Me' as a single. Geffen said no. The Icarus Line wanted 'Up Against The Wall Motherfuckers' as the lead single. V2 bent over and took one in the ass in the name of rock and roll. It's the single of the year - no question - and it's April; 'Penance Soiree' can't fail. Call me sycophantic, whatever: it'll be the new black come autumn.

Stealing back the crown from the cock rock.

You've seen them staring at you from the magazine stalls, The Pretenders (no, not the Chrissie Hynde brigade). Them, with their floppy fringes, and them, with their foot-on-monitor, spandex-clad histrionics. They. Stop. NOW. The opening half of 'Penance... alone blows every so-called rock act polluting our airwaves clean away, such is the savage malevolence that resonates within every single syllable that spouts from Joe Cardamone's mouthful of poison. Those lucky enough to have picked up that single will know 'Caviar' already; it's a monster of a size disproportionate to any b-side ever heard. That's EVER. Equally monstrous are 'On The Lash' and 'Kiss Like Lizards', but it's the two-minute barbed-wire complete-and-utter clusterfuck that is 'Spit On It' that really proves that The Icarus Line are everything The Pretenders (NO! Not those Pretenders!) can never even aspire to be. It'll make you sweat lava, but the feeling's intoxicating like nothing felt before. If music were tangible you'd let this penetrate you anyway it wanted, and then sleep in the wet patch.

Conquering all.

You can't stop this. None of us can stop this.
'Penance Soiree' is the album no one was brave enough to make, before five LA punks decided to fuck the major label system and produce their epitaph, for after this all bets are off. Kurt wanted to burn out brightly. He didn't. The Icarus Line just might, but they'll take down everything before the horizon line with them when they do. Kill the fakers and steal their worthless souls - The Icarus Line are back and they want blood. God help those that would dare stand in their way.

Rock and roll is dead. Long live The Icarus Line.

The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

fucking hell

that's the first thing i've read on here in a long time that actually makes me want to go out and buy a record.

nice one

The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

ermm...listen to "mono" (icarus line album, not courtney love single) then listen to Pennance soiree...

Mono is more *ahem* punk rock by far. the new stuff seems like its been written to please NME

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

going by what I saw last Easter it sounds well different
but once you start trying to sound punk you're not punk already
icarus line ARE punk
full stop

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

this should be the (il)logical exclamation mark, the incandescing apocalypse of the rock'n'roll cadaver being set ablaze and whistling a high tune as it drops into the abyss.
they encapsulate the everything within the punk rock canon, or whatever force drives men to burn-out and bury morality under the tree of good and evil.
for that, I cherish them... greasy bitches they be.

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

one time Joey tried to fuck my mouth?

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

Your stalker has been informed.
Be afraid.
Very afraid.

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

i didnt know the nme liked bands who had something controversial to say and sounded like a cross between "LA Blues", Jesus and mary chain, spacemen 3 and the birthday party. they might of done back in 1990 or something, but not now. penance soiree is much more punk than mono, mainly cos it sounds nothing like any other band around at the moment.

The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

They were utterly shocking when I saw them supporting Primal Scream back in January. Forty minutes of earache-inducing, brainless hardcore mush. And what with Southampton Guildhall being as cavernous as it is, it ended up sounding even more of a mess.

If Nirvana had turned into the Icarus Line...it's a thinker, I'll give you that.

The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

The Icarus Line are the best band on the planet at the moment, by faaaar. That author of that piece writes with more relevance and urgency than most of the cack on here, well done son. :)

And 'Up Against The Wall' - single of the year, spot on!

The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

it's penance by the way, not pennance. what a pedantic asshole.

is the album on p2p? ( i will buy it so don't get het up)

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

You can download half of it from the 'Gossip' page from www.buddyhead.com

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

'swhat I thought too, but it had 'Pennance' written all over it.

Is that, like, the Amellican spelling?

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

Good review n all.... but just to be pedantic:

Geffen did release Rape Me, in the UK at least, as a double a-side with All Apologies...

Admittedly there was a bit of furore over its release, down to Nirvana just about being the biggest band in the world at the time with a huge reach of influence and the label believing that the mainstream crowd would just interpret the song as a crass, offensive excavation of a sensative subject. Y'know, like 9 year old girls going "mummy, what's rape??". It was major label treatment of the collision between artistic expression and social/cultural acceptance. It also saw Nirvana playing an amusing game of cat and mouse with the producers of the MTV Awards.

Icarus Line are a cult band who put a swear word in the title of their song. And it was released as a limited edition. And played on the radio and MTV with the swear word taken off.

Hardly the same now is it.

Just a point...

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

quite an important point actually
don't knock yourself so... black lights

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

The point was that Nirvana had wanted Rape Me as a lead single, or an a-side at least. That it was tagged onto the back of the insipid All Apologies was a joke (especially if you bought the one that had MV on it... MV? Moist FUCKING Vagina... where's the problem with that!? ;o)

Like when they were due to play Lithium and didn't blah blah blah Nirvana are boring.

Re: The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

But... yes, a good point.
*curses curses curses*

The Icarus Line - Pennance Soiree

Wicked review. Shits all over those pretentious NME reviews who's journos' all use the same long-as-fck-wanky words in the hope that they'll baffle the reader so much (or obfuscate as an NME writer would put it) that we won't realise that they don't have a fkin clue about music. Do they not realise they all sound the fcking same and all write the same non-sensical bullshit?

This review has made me want to go out and buy the album - not a dictionary.

Thankyou DiS.

p.s. Icarus Line better be good!;)

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

Icarus have got the attitude right, but setting them up as the "best thing to happen....ever" is just the kind of naive shit NME comes out with monthly.

Re: The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

They're hardly Campag Velocet tho...

Re: The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

But the thing is, we (well, at least 5 of us) do firmly believe that the Icarus Line are, and have been for several years, the leading light of a new direction to rock. Nothing about them feels like a combination of stolen ideas and sensations. It's four guys beating themselves up through music. Their live performances are like 4 iggy pops all trying smash the stage into the side of a towerblock (or at least destroy the foundations holding up the room).

We don't want to overhype or oversell anything. That isn't our style, as at some time or another people will buy a record, be disapointed and never trust us ever again.

At this very moment in time, The Icarus Line are the most, for want of a better word, 'essential' band going and because of that, we may have used a few hyperbole's.

Re: The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

It's a classic record, simple as.
'Mono' was the solid foundation.
'Penance...' is the glorious realisation.
What comes next will probably destroy everything that's come before... let's hope so.

But there's five of them, not four ;o)

Re: The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

its all don devore, without him penance soiree wouldn't sound as incredible.

also. where is the your enemies friends album review? you are being videotaped is equally as stunning and "essential" as penance soiree.

Re: The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

If someone wants to send it to us (ME ME ME ME) it'll get covered.

I have the EP from, like, aaaaaaaages ago and it rawks considerably... THIS IS DISCONNECT!... yeah.

MD

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

I'm sure it wasn't yr intention but I now have 'Hand In Pocket' stuck in my head.

You bastard.

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

if you want to hear it, i can IM some mp3s to you

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

When does it actually come out?

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

am i the only one that can't shake the tune "shut your fucking face, unclefucker" every time i read "up against the wall motherfuckers"??

I admit i've not actually heard the Icarus Line, but if or when i do, if it doesn't in fact fit this tune, i'm going to be bitterly disappointed. nay, gutted.

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

Unless you don't have a rock 'n' roll bone in your body, you won't be.

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

Hmm, all very serious! How about those Yankee's!?

The Icarus Line - Penance Soiree

they are just the sound of ectasy to me. I dont care what level of shallow wanky punkness theyre currently put on, Mono was a bit bitty in parts but when they got it right (Love in happiness, In lieu, Feed a cat, keep your eyes peeld, Please fire me) it was so fun. I cant wait to hear the new album.
