The Rasmus: Dead Letters

>Judging a book by its cover and all that should be dissuaded around here, but it’s difficult not to on ‘Dead Letters’, the debut album from Finnish rock newbies The Rasmus. These guys are already striding Europe like titans, topping a large number of single and album sales charts in several nations, and by the look of growing media coverage over here it appears they’re set to crack the UK as well any time soon. Yet I’m looking at the gothic nature of the front cover, the dark forest imagery, the quote explaining what a ‘dead letter’ actually is, the photographs of band members sporting goatee beards and hoodies from their own merchandise stall. The words “metal” and “nu” spring to mind.

And those two words stay in the mind throughout. Don’t gnash your teeth just yet, though, as the album is saved by the single ‘In The Shadows’, or more specifically the riff it employs and the “uh-oh uh-oh” refrain that is added liberally into the song’s structure. Although not the ceaselessly infectious tune that the accompanying press release would like you to think it is, it’s still the most consciously insistent use of “uhs” and “ohs” since Beyonce did her thang on ‘Crazy In Love’ (only not as good), and feels like a relief even after only one track. Admittedly there are some other appealing moments present, such as the way that ‘In My Life’ and ‘Back In The Picture’ try to quicken the pace by bordering on the emo, and the five seconds of ‘Time To Burn’ that sound like Black Sabbath before the harmonies and key changes bring an altogether more ‘Hair Metal’ feel.

But a large quantity of the album is all too predictable in its dire nature, ranging from what sounds like a high-pitched Nickelback to a half-arsed Lostprophets. Even the lyrical content is painful for all the wrong reasons – for example the chorus in Linkin Park-lite track ‘Guilty’: “Guilty / Woah / I feel so empty / Woah / Empty”, which just about sums up the sort of ‘pain’ they want you to feel them expressing. Even closing track ‘Funeral Song’ threatens to become a piss-take of Limp Bizkit’s ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ but, sadly, doesn’t.

Nice try then, lads, but I assume the rock’s too diluted to excite many beyond the daytime FM playlist lovers. Needless to say, they’ll be huge.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Fucking bollocks. Absolute fucking bollocks. Talentless fucks.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

lol, talentless fucks eh? U clearly hav no idea wot ur talkin about and ur talkin a load of shit? Are your ears connected 2 ur brain at all?

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

fuck you, your definatly wrong they actually have talent and its a really lively song but wait till you hear the second song called first day of my life it's amazin

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

yeah, but for someone swearing allegiance to Slipknot, you can hardly talk.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

If you like them you don't deserve to have ears.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

they fuckin well aren't talentless. if they were they why the fuck have they relesed 5 or 6 albums and conquered most of europe and south america. and many other countries. so tell me how the fuck does that make them talentless. Perro desgraciado hijo de tu puta madre espero que te mueras

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

''Perro desgraciado hijo de tu puta madre espero que te mueras''

that was uncalled for.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

I bought the album today and it's pretty decent.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i got the album i like it i dont care if u think there shit as your opinion isn't mine

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

yeh all i thought about when i heard this band was "HIM are the shittest band in existence, yet this band are *trying* to be HIM!?"

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i thought they were swedish.......

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

You all know FUCK ALL! This is their sixth album! And here's a review, the reference points in which will most likely be lost on you three at least. Then again, it wasn't written for this site. Nevertheless....

THE RASMUS

‘Dead Letters’

If Mike Tramp went ‘Nu-Breed’ this is what it might sound like! THE RASMUS are from Finland and this their sixth album, has been troubling charts in Scandinavia/Europe for much of 2003. With a UK release of the album and European hit single ‘In The Shadows’ imminent their global assault looks set to continue.

‘In The Shadows’ itself is a glorious pop/rock song in the INVERTIGO mould, but truth is, from the opening of lead track ‘First day of My Life’ there are some clear classic rock/AOR influences lurking here. ‘Guilty’ is an uptempo almost ‘AOR by numbers’ rocker with its verse, bridge, and tell tale “woah oh” chorus. All that’s missing is the key change! I defy you to not sing along though! It’s a similar story with ‘In My Life’. Then there’s the ballad ‘Not Like The Other Girls’ with it’s JOURNEYish intro and harmonised lead guitars solo, or ‘Back In The Picture’ where THE RASMUS pick up the pace again blurring the line between rock and pop in much the same way as THIN LIZZY did. And it’s this that could well turn out to be their strength and the key to their success. At times singer Laun’s voice is spookily similar to Mike Tramp. Maybe it’s just in the accent. Whatever, it’s a voice that gives the music that commercial edge and all-important crossover appeal

If classic AOR was a Bacardi and coke, THE RASMUS would be the twist of lemon to liven it up and give it a new zing! Coming soon to a radio/TV/venue near you. Best not to fight it!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

okay, i now realise that this is their sixth album and that i made a mistake in assuming that it was their first, but i thought that the actual opinion of what the songs sounds like was more important. Ho hum...

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Wrong!
'Describing' what the songs sound like, in order to let others form an opinion on whether the album sounds like something they might like to give more of their own attention, is more important. Your (or my, for that matter) 'opinion' of what the music sounds like counts for fuck all.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i appreciate that, but it's hard to escape opinion even when describing the sound itself. otherwise, why would we be here arguing about it?

for instance i thought that The Rasmus sounded like Linkin-Lite, somebody else thought it sounded like a second-rate version of HIM, somebody else thought it sounded like decent goth rock ...they're all description but highly opinionated.

and i know my opinion counts for fuck all, but the best way of deciding whether or not you should pay more attention to a certain band is by hearing some of their music. Surely.......?

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

"the best way of deciding whether or not you should pay more attention to a certain band is by hearing some of their music. Surely.......?"

Agreed! But just how many people do you think will be encouraged to give the band a fair listen after reading....

"But a large quantity of the album is all too predictable in its dire nature, ranging from what sounds like a high-pitched Nickelback to a half-arsed Lostprophets. Huh?

Still, as I said before, I wouldn't really expect The Rasmus to appeal to that many DiS readers.
SOPHIA is a band that they should check out tho.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

"But just how many people do you think will be encouraged to give the band a fair listen after reading.... etc."

they'll hear the songs on heavy radio/TV rotation
they'll hear it from enthusiastic goth mates
they'll read other reviews
they'll download it for nowt
they'll decide to ignore my ranting and judge things for themselves

by the way, do you like this band? fair play if you don't, respect either way...

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

dude, shame on you for expressing your own opinion, particularly in a music review. who do you think you are, gandhi?

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Surfpunk u sound a bit big headed of urself dont u with "Wrong" and going on that it is thier sixth album shut up

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

its not bad but not really my thing. sixth album? theres a suprise, and there was me thinking they had jumped on the him band wagon......obviously not, i guess i didn't give them enough credit, but as i said they arent really my thing so i won't pretend to know all about goth rock!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

they might still be jumping on the HIM bandwagon...although i shouldn't really say that...

maybe their first five LPs sounded like The Darkness. Or Black Lace. Or Alec Empire. Or a combination of all three.

argh...

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Well duh, the point of a review is to give the reviewers opinion on some music. If nobody wrote with opinions just descriptions music journalism would be pretty fucking dull, no?

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i love the rasmus....they are original in my opinion....they rule! i can't wait for the album and i can't wait to see them live. So go away all you Rasmus haters....go back to your shitty music and let us appreciate something good in peace.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

'so original'

you're taking the piss, right?

'go away Rasmus haters'

are you, like, 11? nobody actually talks like that.

then again, it's not the rasmus's fault they wouldn't know quality songwriting even if they studied a back catalogue of Radiohead for the rest of their life

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! RADIOHEAD!!!!

You really think RadioHead has quality song-writing??? My god!!! RadioHead my arse! I feel like smashing a bloody radio into their heads....

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

'Radiohead' now that's something to get excited about....that is if you like perpetual droning sounds. There again it would n't do if we all liked the same, the world would be a very boring place. Variety is the spice of life and different music suits different moods.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

yes.. eh child i suggest that you go far away and learn how to speak like the real people. my opinion on the sixth album is irrelevant as i.. have ties to.. them but referring to anything else as "shitty music" really does nothing for your argument. as to your remark about listening to The Rasmus in peace? - can't see it happening honestly. This is a band that have put themselves out there for extra special treatment when it comes to critics and have been the under dogs for the better part of 10 years. Dead letters is growing stale and by the sound of your post, i would say that had you turned up to their gigs we would have crushed you.
---here's to the extermination of nouveaux fans!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

look whats wrong with the rasmus they are a good band they started off from scratch and played pubs and clubs.
if u think dead letters is shit(even though im a massive fan)u should really here funky jam thats on their 1st album now that is stale but get the lyrics their good once u actually hear the lyrics with the song!!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

I'm not saying that dead letters isn't a good album, it's just been a little over-played and I'm looking forward to some fresh new material.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

This album is great...

My sister is a big HIM fan so naturally shes into this finnish rock scene and told me about the Rasmus saying that they were a little lighter than HIM.
She lent me the album and I loved it from the second I heard 'First Day of My Life' Admittedly I have to say its got that catchy pop vibe with 'Back in the Picture' but who doesnt like a lift somewhere in an album?!
I would recommend it to anyone who I thought would like it.
For some it would be an aquired taste but once you like them, you love them!
Lauri, the singer has a very unique voice, soft and husky at the same time (so hard to describe)

My verdict - A truly talented band set to inevitably crack the UK *****

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Rubbish.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

terrible band. just terrible.

gen

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

you obviously have some kinda problem they re so cool and orginal i mean he wears a feather in his hair and its black so cool lol :P

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i have never heard of the rasmus b4 the single in the shadows. but i think that they r gr8. u have to be tone deaf not to

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Thanky finally some1 else who thinks that. there other singles are fuckin amazin

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

'Scuse me, but they only recently hit 'merrikin shores. So I'm inclined to think they're pretty badass for a popular group.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

I think this original article was very harsh. The negative judgement was just OTT! I must admit tho the album isnt quite as dark as i thought itd be and turned out to be easy to listen to. ive never heard any of their other albums so i dont know wat their other stuff is like - i do like this album tho on its own. i love lori's style! and the video to in the shadows is, in my opinion, really well done. i wouldnt call them talentless either, some of the songs r really deep n meaningful. this album is kinda refreshing compared to all the pop, 'made for disco' crap thats always around in the english charts! I think the songs hav a gd sound to them and i love lori's voice!

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

This album is awful. There is nothing original about it at all, the lyrics aren't great and this guy sounds like Bryan Adams, dresses like Ville Valo and it's possible that they're going to be one of the biggest breakthrough acts of this year, there's no justice. Eurgh.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

alright then, thats your point of view!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

I agree that its not exactly original, but I'm lovin' it!!!

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

I hope this band all die a painful death.

Worst album of the year so far? Nah, second worst after Easyworld.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. In this case, I believe The Rasmus may not be all that great but they're up and coming. If they were that lousy as you believe, wouldn't rock legends like Rancid, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Garbage not work with them during their tours in Finland...hmm?

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

theyre fuckin shit is what you mean

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

totally know what you're getting at!

I understand that you may not agree with The Rasmus being great or something but it's true. Why would these rock legends work with The Rasmus during tours if they were such shite?

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

their first 3 albums were, like, jazzy ska, they only just started doing the rock thing. Goth? Nah, they just rock! Yeah, some of their songs might sound a bit cheesy, but at least they dare to do that instead of being "cool" all the time. You trolls should just get a fucken life!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

if this "jazzy ska" sounded like, say, Toots and the Maytals then it might be worth checking out. If it sounded like Smashmouth, though...

and surely wanting to look like Robert Smith counts as trying to be "cool"?

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Wasn't 'Behind Blue Eyes' a Who song, covered by Limp Penis?

Good review, though. Not that I was even tempted to buy it anyway.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Yes, Durst did cover it...*shudder*.

oh, thank you.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i think that u lot should stop comparing and start listening.
They are The Rasmus and the sound like The Rasmus (SHOCK!)
personally i have the album and i love it.
theyre oviously good if they have been on tour with the red hot chilli peppers and HIM to name but two.
If u dont like it its ur opinion and thats ok. but i recon that it sounds like the reviewer judged it b4 he had listened to it.
oh and saying that you hope that the band all die is just taking it too far. just because ur not a fan of their music.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

if i'd judged it fully before i'd heard it i would have been much harsher...

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

hmmm...would these guys have won 4 emma awards(the finnish grammies) earlier this year and a mtve award for best nordic band if they truly sucked?they may not be a band for everyone but talent is something they certainly got!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

too true!!

I know that not EVERYONE can like The Rasmus but there's no point in everyone dissing them!
And they've all got talent - certainly! They deserve every emma they awarded with.

By the way, I freakin' LOVE The Cult especially their 'Love' album. Anybody know who i'm on about???

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Rasmus Rule All in my opinion but i aint got nethin against ppl who dnt like them xcept the stupid wankers who diss them on websites like this :D

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

This band sound like Linkin Park with no balls.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

Okay, I'm one of the few from the states that likes them so you can't be angry at me! I bought their CD on itunes, I thought it was pretty good at first, but then I kept listening and it's like there is so much potential in their music but it falls flat; like they should overlap some guitars, experiment and not settle for mediocer quality music when they can soo much more. And then the saddest thing I heard on the album is the guitar solo in "Not like the other Girls". It didn't show any skill like the player was holding back and they could do sooo much more (It was just really dull). It almost was lets just make some "okay" mainstream music, like they didn't want to make it more then they could, to make it great( and you know they can cause they've been playing since they were what like 16). Anyway I hope they step up and take it all the way on their next album ( if there is one)
Celeste

ps- The Killers ROCK !:?)

god u fricken dumbass the rasmus have some of the best damn rock out there u need to get ur head on straigh cuz they freakin rock and im here to tell u to STFU!! THEY ROCK!! ROCK ON RASMUS..im not the only one who thinks this dumbass i dunno wut ur fricken deal is but get some sense!!!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

if being a dumbass means disliking the Rasmus then so be it, i know which one i'd rather go for...

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i think the rasmus are kool, there album rocks, and Time to Burn is a wicked song, if u lot don't like The Rasmus why bother cuming on ere and dissing them, why don't u go to a fan site who u do like and talk about them insted of wasting your time here just talking crap.

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

uh, they sent me their CD, i assumed they wanted a review...this surely is good publicity for a band...

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

i agree wi u every one has there opinion n i respect that. i love em,ur rite tho ppl shud go on a website of a band they enjoy instead of wastin there time on sumthin they dont.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

oh and thommo,if rasmus aint ur thing wat is!!!!!!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

The Rasmus would be my 'thing' if i felt they were more exciting, had better songs etc. Often it's more about bands than styles/genres.

i thought that them being bottled at Reading was harsh, though...

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

I am new to The Rasmus and think that Dead Letters is a brilliant album I love In the Shadows and find Laurie's voice hauntingly beautiful! I do regret not going to see them when they were in Wolverhampton.

The Rasmus - Dead Letters

what the fuck is up with all u Rasmus haters there a fuckin brilliant band. Just cos u do jack shit with your life theres no need to take the piss outa ppl u dnt even know. I have all there albums and they Fuckin rock! u obviously have crap all to do if u even bother to qrite insults about this band and ppl u dnt even know so take a hint when i say FUCK OFF!!

Re: The Rasmus - Dead Letters

I presume that the people who have expressed negative opinions about The Rasmus are 'ppl you dnt even know' and yet you still feel free to say that they do jack shit with their lives and have crap all to do.
