With the eighties revival in full-swing, it should be no surprise to find our indie pop bands looking back to that same era for inspiration. So it goes that Southampton’s brightest hopes, Delays, have concocted an album with magpie influences that include ‘80s stalwarts Cocteau Twins and The La’s, but also pinches cues from ‘60s easy-going pop groups like The Byrds and The Hollies. All of these threads are glued together by singer Greg Gilbert’s gravelly falsetto and a relentless choir of heavenly harmonies.

Rather like My Vitriol’s hamfisted attempt to nail together shoegazing and grunge, much of ‘Faded Seaside Glamour’ falls somewhat flat on the quality meter. However, where the formula works, the results are never less than glorious. ‘Long Time Coming’ and ‘You Wear The Sun’ are nuggets of catchy-as-fuck pop brilliance, while ‘Hey Girl’ is nothing short of a classic piece of songwriting, despite its unmistakable similarity to ‘There She Goes’. After all, if you’re gonna re-write a song there are plenty of worse ones to choose.

Unfortunately, though, almost a third of the album is devoted to namby-pamby ballads which, stripped of the band’s trademark sugary hooks, sound truly wispy by proportion. We’re talking filler here and not in the tasty Heinz sandwich variety. None of this is aided by the heavy-handed production which bludgeons away the character of the record with a little too much gusto. The end result is a collection of songs that sound thrown together and, while many tracks do individually piss on the work of their more fashionable contemporaries, as an album it just doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Well I think you hit the nail on the head as usual Mr Edwards. Everyone here in Southampton seems to think the sun shines out of their arses, and I guess as hometown heroes they are a vast improvement on Craig David. They have a selection of absolutely gorgeous pieces of pop, and then they have a load of boring waffle to go with it, which is a shame really...

I'm probably gonna get beaten up now... *hides*

Kx

I respect the opinion of anyone whose surname is Price. *listens to something other than the singles*

Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

Hmmm... a good review from one of my favourite DiS writers....
brusma's gonna get this album

Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

the first three singles have all been amazing (i know there have been four, but nearer than was a re-release)
much like the cash sluts that are jet. because of their vodafone sell out they are re-releasing are you gonna be my girl. it must only be months old.
anyway, thats dissapointing. i had high hopes.

Re: Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

Nearer Than Heaven is average. HG and LTC are great, I reckon! And the album has very dull moments, but I'll persevere, being from Southampton and all.

Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

As if Southampton didn't have a bad enough name already. Why oh why? Oh, maybe I'm being harsh, it's not bad I suppose...all I can say is it certainly isn't going to get our humble city much further towards getting on the map...

They seem like another band that get various 'They sound like...' labels thrown at them by reviewers without much of a clue (not you Tom, I like your review here). F'instance, take these comments that you'll see on many a review:

'They have Beach Boys harmonies'

-C'mon, having two blokes singing in two-part harmony doesn't make you the Beach Boys. Where's the exciting and varied instrumentation?

'They have La's influences'

...otherwise translated as 'Oooh, they jangle like There She Goes'. The first La's album wasn't all jangle stuff, there's folk elements, some really loud guitar (listen closely to the intro of There She Goes, just before Mavers starts singing you can hear the guitars starting to feedback). Failure is a really hard track musically. I haven't heard all of the album as yet, about half of it but Tom is spot on with comments about waffley ballads. I hope they don't get hyped up too much right now as they've got the potential to go on and further. A decent debut with more to come. Right Alan? (cue descent into Lynamisms)

Re: Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

I agree with your point about The Beach Boys. It also happened with The Thrills and was equally irritating. Happily, this review compares The Delays to The Hollies and, certainly in regards to Long Time Coming, it's the most spot-on comment about this band that I've read.

Re: Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

yeah, the thrills dont sound anything like the beach boys, they sound like the supernaturals.

i hadnt really thought of the hollies comparison here. it is a good one. and i love the hollies. so much better than the stones.

Re: Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

I think that Delays sound more like Cast than The La's, myself.

That isn't even a criticism, I'm the only person I know that doesn't think Cast are evil.

Mind you, I'm not sure its a compliment, either.

Re: Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

if anyone uses the phrase "beach boys harmonies" in reference to a sound with less than three singers they're just being lazy and foolish.
the thrills, however, do sound like the beachboys on songs like "santa cruz". except for the lead vocals.
and the beach boys evolved. they didn't always have lush instrumentation.

Hi, new here! Anyway....after 2 listen to the album i'd agree with the review. Though there are some really beautiful things going on in the album. But as said in the review i dont think it holds together much....seems a little dry....guess thats what faded sea-side glamour might of ment then?

Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour

I gotta disagree a little, I actually like all the ballady stuff and its got a good variation on fast and slow songs. A very good debut effort and with more to come no doubt. The ballads don't go so well cos the other stuff is so good, and 12 Long Time Comings would have been great bt a bit 1 dimensional. Wanderlust is immense also

OK singles and way too much filler - and Teenage Fanclub have been doing a better version of this for years.
