With the release of last year’s excellent ‘Us’, Mull Historical Society aka Colin MacIntyre, morphed from Hebridean indie weirdo into fully-fledged pop whizz-kid. ‘This Is Hope’ picks up exactly where ‘Us’ left off, also bringing with it the trademark MHS quirks that make the band distinctive, but also slightly embarassing to like. But these songs are wrapped up in the such wonderful melodies that it’s hard to be cynical for long.

Clearly not wishing to be left out of the all-enveloping ’80s revival, MacIntyre has reinvented The Cure’s ‘Love Cats’ for the 21st Century (‘Tobermory Zoo’). Meanwhile, the excellently-titled ‘Treescavengers’ explores the heartbreaking side of life up north: “They say I’m part of the problem/They say I shouldn’t falter”, he sings wearily.

If it’s slightly weaker than its immediate predecessor, that’s only because it’s following the same furrow. Still, it’s refreshing to see an artist in these times releasing albums in such quick succession. Most of all, we can rest assured that this music is for us alone. Americans will never understand Mull Historical Society and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

This is a nuts album... but it's a little different from the other two he has made. I like it, but then I'm biased because my name's on the credits!

Re: Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

I didn't like the second album, as a whole it was too sickly (though the songs were good live and most individually). Think I should buy the new one?

How did you manage to get your name on the credits?

Re: Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

I agree on the second one but liked this one much better (not as much as Loss though)

and by buying all three versions of the single online I think

Re: Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

Just had to buy one copy of the single only from HMV. So not an album credit I actually deserved. That's three so far - Elbow (singing in the crowd at Glastonbury), AntiProduct (helping to fund their album after their manager ran off with the studio fees) and this one.

Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

I'll have to get round to buying this soon.

Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

'Tis a pretty good album. Peculiar is the most singalong pop song I've heard this year - 'tis a stroke of genius.

Re: Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

Oooh I hope that that's the next single and not Casanova, which is one of my least favourite tracks and far too similar to Watching Xanadu

Re: Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

Casanova sounds like a ropey pastiche of 'Gravity' from his second album. You can even sing "where's your, where's your sense of gravity" to the chorus chords.

Re: Mull Historical Society - This Is Hope

Yep - Casanova At The Weekend is definitely the dodgiest thing on there. It just sounds like his old stuff, which wouldn't be a bad thing in itself if it wasn't a poor facsimile... rest of the album's great though.
