Art Brut: Bang Bang Rock And Roll

How many times, in the post-Strokes r‘n’r landscape we inhabit, have you heard a band say “Well, ha! We annoyed you and therefore we obviously caused a reaction!” What, and so you succeeded?! Don’t know about you, but I wanna be moved rather than annoyed by a lack of substance in my bands, and you can’t even tell such charlatans to fuck off ‘cos it’d just fuel their pithy, pointless reasons for making music.

Art Brut aren’t that sort of band. I feel adverse to say how they’ve split opinion to such a polar extent because often that sounds like a by-product of vacuous hype. But every letters page, messageboard and heckle that’s been about them since Rough Trade unleashed ‘Formed A Band’ all those months ago has come across like the proverbial line in the sand. On one side there’s those saluting their scattergun tunes expressing pent-up modern suburbia and adolescent frustration, and on the other there’s those who think that they don’t mean it, that this is all some sort of joke, and have hence dismissed them as the pseudo-ironic, intermediate Ikara Colt. I’m with the former, and after hearing debut album ‘Bang Bang Rock And Roll’ I can say that, if it is some sort of joke all along, I’m not so much laughing as dancing like a monkey on fire.

Hang on, you say. “pent-up modern suburbia”? “Adolescent frustration”? Doesn’t this make the Brut a guitar-toting New Cross Streets or the shoutier millennial Jilted John for the hairstyle-obsessed scenesters? Well, perhaps, if ‘Fight’ (“Wassa matter? Wut? Nothin’?”) and ‘Emily Kane’ (“I want schoolkids on buses singing your name”) are anything to go by, respectively. But it’s much more than that, and ‘BBR&R’ has more in common with The Jam’s riffing, Mark E Smith’s delivery, Pulp’s portrayal of (eek!) working class emotion and…dare I say it…the original punk attitude than most will readily admit to. Such analytical musings should be banished, though, when you’ve got a guy screaming “MODERN ART! MAKES ME! WANT TO ROCK OUT!” This isn’t irony, it’s barely rock n’ roll, it’s just life imitating art and art writing explosive, truly thrilling post-Britpop art-punk monologues about it.

Okay, so maybe ‘Stand Down’ is an ill-advised stab at politics, and Eddie Argos’ tale of not being able to get it up in ‘Rusted Guns Of Milan’ is a bit more information about his personal life than we would’ve liked (“I’m fine when I am with my own hand”…uh, thanks for sharing, Eddie). Even if the steady harmonies and “I know I can” refrain make it sound like a cross between Supergrass‘Caught By The Fuzz’ at the wrong speed and the locomotive in ‘Dumbo’. But, well, it wouldn’t be much fun if things were perfect, would it? As for the remainder, its astounding that AB can reel off so many downright enjoyable songs that it almost hurts. ‘Formed A Band’ is revisited with a renewed, nearly Pixies-esque shouty vigour, no longer as much a call to arms as a celebration that they’re still together over a year later. ‘Emily Kane’ says more about unrequited teenage kicks than any textbook on the hormonal process could. And if ‘Moving To LA’’s exotic strumming and sweet escapism doesn’t get them on their beloved Top Of The Pops then the BBC doesn’t know what’s good for them. If you were worried that ‘BBR&R' might not deliver then here’s the pudding with a side order of, ahem, proof custard.

Dye your hair black, stay off the crack. Buy this album, see ‘em live, and go form a band. I’d love to see the look on Fearne Cotton’s face.

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

This is a good album, i did play it non stop (morning to night) for nearly a week. But i did tire of it and i haven't played it for a month now.

A good throw-away pop record!

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

I disagree. While I doubt that I'll be listening to it every morning and night for the remainder of my days (because that would make me an arid, imagination-stunted moron) this record certainly has more longlevity than you suggest. 'A throw-away good pop record' to me is one that is pleasing yet resoundingly mediocre both lyrically and sonically, so that it fails to make any lasting impression on the listener. Bang Bang Rock & Roll is, I believe, neither of these things: it is a record that will undoubtably mean something to a substantial number of people. If no one else, I certainly intend to go back to it with pretty much the same freqency as many of the other records in my collection.

Besides which, it's fun to dance to, so shut up.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

how come you had it for month even before it was released?

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

heh, great review. consider me 60% (approx.) more interested in this album than before.

-10 points for a Jilted John reference, though.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

thank you carrotrope, 60% is good enough for me.

and yes, themurdermystery, i prefer the original versions, firstly because i think they're better, and secondly just to be awkward.

TOP OF THE POPS!

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

I disagree. What did they do with Art Brut? The new version of Formed A Band just sounds crappy. I mean, it's still a good album none-the-less, clever, witty, and all that, it's just, well, it lacks the punchy tongue-in-cheekness that Formed a Band and Modern Art first had.

-20 points for lack of Half Man Half Biscuit and Mark Perry references

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

I don't like Art Brut.

I heard a song of theirs that says something like 'I wanted to bend her and bolt her'. I know this sort of sexism is really common, but that doesn't mean we have to put up with it. Sexism in art is unimaginative at best.

Musically speaking, 'Moving to LA' is one of the most irritating songs I've ever heard.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

how is that in any way sexist?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Glad to see that im not the only one thinking that.

Surely its just a description of desire?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

An example, I believe, of unwillingness to offend gone mad - or perhaps willingness to be offended gone slightly madder.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

And isn't it 'i wanted to bend her and fold her' anyway?? contortionist fetish ahoy...

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Isn't is "bend her and fold her" anyway?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

apparently it's "want to WORK out" too.

d'oh!

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

yeh cos it said so in the grauniad so it must be true.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Living as we do in a patriarchy, any expression of male sexual desire that reduces a woman to something to be bent and bolted reinforces her objectified position in society. The way I see it, this furtherance of a culture of male superiority meets the definition of sexism.

Similarly, current world trade laws with roots in empire-building policies can be said to be racist. I would find a song lyric celebrating this enforced economic imbalance equally offensive.

It is important to remember that actually being sexist is worse than accusing someone of sexism.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

But its not celebrating male dominance. Its refering to a desire.

Theres a point where being pc goes too far, and further more to suggest that men shouldnt express their desire because of the way that society is (wrongly) configured is pretty much as bad. Feminism has moved on from the 70's you know. Instead of censoring one group (which is what you appear to be suggesting) a far better approach is to enable both groups to be heard equally.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Bang Bang RnR = boring.
Sorry, but it is.
Live, I dunno. Cos I've not seen 'em.
Ho hum...

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

shutup mike diver

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Um, okay.
But I really don't hear the fuss, not on wax at least.
Perhaps in the flesh they're, like, amazing...?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

I totally agree with ...thatcherdies. There does come a point where when you can't say or do anything in society or art for fear of upsetting someone somewhere, you live in a fucking censored conservative regressive world. Political Correctness has started to go too far up it's own arse these days, and adrian you seem to be a victim of it. I bet you find Brass Eye highly offensive & read the Daily Mail.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Adrian are you joking? Did you join this forum and accuse Art Brut of sexism for your own amusement?

I think you did.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

an expression of male dominance does NOT objectify the woman. Because that's how sex works. that's how it has worked for centuries, since we were apes. - it's darwin, innit. proven. males are sexually dominant.
IF it was objectifying the woman, then it would indeed be sexist. but no.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

My boyfriend isn't sexually dominant. Unless I let him be.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

maybe you should

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

what's wrong with being sexy?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

wondered how long it would be before this quip came up.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Watch 'The Secretary'

That is all.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Possibly the most imaginative art movement in history, Surrealism, was highly misoginistic.

Ha ha! Look how much i know!

P.S. it's not sexist anyway. it's just saying what he wants to do to her - honest, yes. sexist, no.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

I saw Art Brut the other night in Leeds - I was there to see Vincent Vincent, who were supporting. The performance was ok, but I'm really not a fan of the music. Lyrics were occasionaly funny, and Eddie Argos' antics brought a smile to our faces, but I couldnt understand the fanaticism of the people at the front.

I then met someone later on, who said that this had 'been the most life affirming rock concert he had ever been to'. And that Art Brut 'were so "about now"', so 'up to date', so 'with it' - not in a 'hip' sort of sense. This made me think, that maybe the concert had been ok - and Eddie talking, not singing, about being Top Of The Pops for 8 weeks, made sense, in an ironic sort of way.

They made me laugh afterwards, too, with their supreme drunkenness - entering into the realm of the unwell!!!

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

and in any case, it's nicked off The Osmonds' Love Me For A Reason:

Girl when you hold me
how you control me.
You bend me and fold me any way you please.
It must be easy for you the loving things that you do
For just a past time for you.
I could never be and I never know girl if I should stay or go
'Cause the games that you play keep driving me away

Don't love me for fun girl let me be the one girl
Love me for a reason and let the reason be love.
Don't love me for fun girl
let me be the one girl
Love me for a reason let the reason be love.

Kisses and caresses are only minor tests Babe
Of love which it stresses between a woman and a man.
So if love ever lasting isn't what you're asking
I'll have to pass girl and proudly take a stand
I can't continue guessing because it's only messing up my pride
And my mind oh
so right now it's time to tell you

Don't love me for fun girl let me be the one girl
. . .
I'm just a little old fashioned it takes more than
A physical attraction my initial reaction is honey
Give me love not a facsimile of love.

Don't love me for fun girl let me
be the one girl
. . .

yeha!

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Completely irrelevant to the whole "sexism" argument, but I think the lyric you're looking for is "I wanted to bend her and fold her".

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

If he's saying "bend her & fold her" then it is deffo objectification: He thinks she's a piece of paper. The bastard!! Death to Art Brut for quite clearly being less left wing than some other people......

I despair I really do.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

I dont say this often but this post just made me laugh uncontrolably

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Artbrut are goood especially live....

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

erm, really? Care to elaborate a little bluey?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Ok unlike some I actually quite like art brut yes they have been overhyped and yes musically they can be a shambles but unless you have seen them in a live context I think its a bit unfair to say they are shocking like some do. In actual fact live they are interesting/ironic/emotional and witty yes humour remember that?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

really disliked art brut untill i saw them live, but now i love them!! ha ha they really are something different live

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

a convincing argument...

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

are you being serious?

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

yes I'm deadly serious justy like him I wanna speak to the kids........and make israel and palestine get alone...or maybe just for once not be cyncial about a band.

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

yeh, would you think it was sexist if the 'her' was 'him' or changed the line to
'i want to bend him over and fuck him until i feel small intestine?'

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

whilst it has no longevity AT ALL, it's great fun while it lasts and "18,000 Lira" is hilarious.

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Fuck I should've bought this. No money left now.

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Wow, Adie didn't review this? ;P

I jest.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

i didn't wanna.

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

i must say, the sound of art brut cant really be contained on a mere cd on a cd player, seeing them live is something else, its like a disco/mosh/entertainment show all in one, and the audience interaction is soooooooo great....and they sound waaay way better live. dont ever judge a band by cd alone.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

i'm not sure - i've seen them a few times, and have had the album a while. they entertained me live, and i'd recommend anyone who's not seen them getting down to the next tour... but i'm not sure i'll go back to it at all. it is funny, but there's only so many times that you can chuckle at a well-thought out piece of sloganeering. but it'd be daft to hate it without seeing the live show - eddie argos is very entertaining, and pretty likeable. go and see them if you've not, then listen to the album a couple of times. but don't expect it to change your life, unless your name's emily kane.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

well they pretty much changed mine (to an extent...).

so... there.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

well, there we go, then. great bands change your life. decent bands change it, but only (to an extent).

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

i'm too old for a pop group to change my life.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

bummer. can't argue with that, i suppose...

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

These dickheads are great! I'll be going to their manchester gig tonight. Only then will I be able to attempt to gague their sincerity.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

This was meant to be a reply to a post by the way.

Re: Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

in nathan barley style.

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

I still haven't forgiven Art Brut for dissing The Velvet Underground... that aside I can't help but love this album and sing along!

The best quality/price Art Brut Mp3's I can find to listen to or buy are

Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll

Just finally listening to the album on Xfm listening post. Hmm.

Maybe 5/6 decent if throwaway songs ruined by his stupid fucking voice. It's just really twattish. I don't know if he is, but he just sounds like a public schoolboy. Not that that's illegal or anything, but......It should be.

The Emily Kane riff totally rips off some song I can't remember too...
