Maximo Park: A Certain Trigger

In the past, you’ve always been able to rely on the inimitable Warp Records to release those obscure gems from the most leftfield of electronic artists, from Aphex Twin through to the likes of Prefuse 73 and Autechre. So to see Maximo Park added to their roster - a band who, in the most simple of terms are part of the ‘angular pop-rock’ movement is something of a surprise. It would also lead you to believe that in the long run, the ‘Park must be something special - you’d be right.

I keep reading reviews where we’re told that Band X has a record filled with singles, a true collection of great songs that people can sing along to, hum in the shower and dance like a wild fool at indie discos all over the country, but I honestly have yet to hear anything that works as coherently and is as effortlessly fun as ‘A Certain Trigger’. With the slowly fading opening rhythm of ‘Signal and Sign’ comes sporadic guitar and then before you can gather yourself, the album bursts into life, setting a manifesto for your next 40 minutes of listening. Every chorus as life-affirming as the last, every verse a singalong delight. Second single ‘Apply Some Pressure’ hasn’t lost an inch of class since its release earlier this year. A moody stomp through hook-after-hook of simple excitement.

There is something quite delightful about listening to a massive refrain sung in a proper Northern accent, with no attempt to try and sing in a faux-American whine. You find yourself singing the word “romance” in the glee-ridden chorus to ‘Graffiti’ in the same way as frontman Paul Smith croons. It’s little touches like this that make the whole record feel honest, natural and provides enough of the sound of ‘now’ to appeal to nigh-on everyone who hears it.

Penultimate track ‘Acrobat’ projects a Maximo Park less keen to send people flying around a dancefloor. A droning organ plays over an almost industrial beat, all around a light tempo, whilst an almost-whispered monologue makes it all sound like an attempt to soundtrack the closing scenes of a film. It works for sure and the chorus pins the song together excellently, but you just worry slightly that it could be an attempt at indulgence. In fairness though, the lyricism and atmosphere that makes the rest of the album so listenable prevails and any accusations of pretension can be quashed by virtue of the simple fact that it breaks up the close of the album so perfectly.

‘A Certain Trigger’ puts Maximo Park firmly above their more obvious contemporaries and pushes the oft-limited boundaries of their sub-genre by creating a record that just feels natural to them, rather than setting out to try and sound like something else specific. The result is a magnificent album where every verse fills you with excitement for the next chorus, where wide-scoping fields of sound work in unison to stage the perfect pop-rock riot and where every meticulously crafted melody comes back to haunt you when you least expect it. You’ll be humming little else for a long time to come.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I just heard this and I have it ordered from Play. It seems great on my first listen. However, I was fairly disappointed that the singles stood out from the rest of the album (unlike Franz). On the whole, I like it, but, does anyone else feel that Acrobat is basically... a bit crap? He's a good enough singer, he doesn't have to resort to talking.

For me, its an album to keep me going while I wait for a second Franz. But its a very good going keeperer.

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

ALBUM OF THE YEAR......SO FAR !!!

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Acrobat is the BEST! Spearmint...Pulp... Brilliant! nothing about resorting to anything, just playing to your strengths...

Acrobat???!!

omg the only bad song on the album!!!!! every othe song is amaaaaazzzing but i always skip that one. it ruins the whole cd.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

The million dollar question:
Will they be around for a second album?

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I really don't think that matters at the moment as it is irrellevent to this release. Why taint THIS release by worrying about crap like that?

By all means bring that up next year, but for goodness sake, its only just been released!

*I must add, i am not a Maximo Park fan*

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Heh. I've got this on order too, but I looked at the band's message board today and Acrobat certainly seems to be the divider of opinion. The diehards are prepared to... erm... shoot a withering glare at anyone who doesn't like it... which seems to be everyone else.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

May just buy this. I did like 'Graffiti' a lot.

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I've been waiting for this for a while now, and on the first few listens it seems pretty darn good. Graffiti still sounds like the standout to me but that's probably just cos I've heard it more than the rest. Nice packaging and live CD on the special edition too, well worth that extra couple of quid!

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Save a single viewing of 'Apply Some Pressure' on MTV2 while at the folk's, I'd never heard the band before listening to the album last night.

It's... well... ok, I spose, but I do happen to think 'Acrobat' is superb - the fuzzy guitars, the piano that rises-and-falls, and the spoken word parts only make the vocals on the chorus sound even more lovely. Great stuff.

what?!?!?!

you must be pretty musical to write all that crap. me-the average 15 year old views that song as the worst on the album.
i do love the rest though especially 'the night I lost my head'

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Diehard, this-band-can-do-no-wrong fan types really piss me off, because they generally put off a lot of casual fans.

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Gotta say that I hate it when people support a band like a football team - when they're shit admit they're shit! I love Maximo Park but 'Acrobat' always = 'Next Track' button on the CD player.

yup

tell me about it

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

i bought it yesterday but i didn't have time to listen to it all the way thru. but it did sound brilliant. "graffiti" is just amazing and "the coast is always changing" and "apply some pressure" just as cool as the first time i heard them.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

People seem to be making a lot of fuss about this band. I really just do not get it, sorry!

I've now seen them live 3 times, played the album 3 or 4 times right through! What am i missing? To me, its just mediocre repetitive artrock no different to any other. Franz do this soooooooo much better.

I don't hate them, i just find it all a little bemusing! Am i alone in thinking this?

Yaaaaaawn!

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Nope - I agree.

...

I DONT I LOVE THEM AND THEIR NEW ALBUM

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

the chorus in acrobat makes up for the "i made a poem" verse lyrics.

not to say those are bad verse lyrics mind

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I bought this record because I love "Apply Some Pressure" and although I thought "Graffiti" was fairly pale in comparison I thought I'd give it a go.

I was pretty disappointed. To my ears, this is a fairly dull record with fairly boring guitar work (what happened to the Apply Some Pressure style hooks and urgency?), mediocre lyrics and well, I don't think they have sufficient songwriting quality to keep the record interesting over its course.

Shame.

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

i just don't get this lot. maybe i'm just getting old.

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Dude - don't belittle yourself by saying you don't 'get' something - Maximo Park isn't like astrophysics, there's no big secret to them! I'd say it's a case that you jujst don't like them or think they're very good.

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Exactly^. Maybe they're just not your band. There's nothing to "get" here. No hidden meanings or anything.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

If I recall, Acrobat is the one that reminds me of fancy Low-type David Bowie and I thought was really good.

This is a really good album, and though the singles stand out initially (well duh, they're singles) the rest is equivilant. Plus the fact that half the album is already singles and you shouldn't really complain, should you?

I've been really really impressed by MP this year. They're just good

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Ah, Maximo Park. They promise so much yet deliver an amount which is, while substantial, disappointing in comparison to expectations. The singles are, in my opinion, significantly better than anything else on the album, and I'll probably end up listening mostly just to them in the long run. The rest in pleasant, but hardly life altering. And yes, Franz Ferdinand are better. And yes, they probably will be around to make a second album, excepting cases of natural disaster.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I like this and I like Acrobat it changes up the album. However does anyone else think it bares a resemblance to "Belong" by REM.Just a thought...

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Whilst Graffiti and Apply Some Pressure are the songs which get you dancing and moving the most they are certainly not the best on the album. For example, Kiss You Better, Limassol and Going Missing are far better songs than Graffiti. Graffiti is just the right track to have released.......BUY IT EVERYONE, BUY IT NOW!

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

to paraphrase Tony Benn, you are "a signpost not a weather-cock"

haha.

...

Oh you 'anti' you

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I think Acrobat is good! The line about the sky being used as a metaphor because "it's so big and expansive" makes me chuckle everytime mind you! But its an emotional song, and as with most of their songs, it sounds to me like it was written about my life. Apply Some Pressure is still song of the year so far. And i imagine they WILL be around for a second album, and that one will probably piss all over the futureheads as well. I don't like the 2 bands being compared, there's a gulf in class in my mind!

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

acrobat is definitely good.....................

listen to it, and tell me you can't relate to it..........

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

A gulf in class? Have you seen both bands live?

I don't like the 2 bands being compared

Then why are you comparing them then?

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

if theres a gulf in class its because the futureheads record is much better

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

fair play. i've seen both live, and whilst i've done my best to like maximo park more than i do, you'd be stupid to say that they stand up to the futureheads live show. there's something quite likeable and approachable about the tunes, but they don't hit me quite as hard after a few listens. lyrically and melodically both acts are good, but the futureheads are one of the best live acts i've seen in the last few years. and 'acrobat' is pretty decent - it was my favourite track the first time i heard it. the singles are decent, but the chorus on that tune is superb. and yes, it does sound a bit 'low' era bowie. what's the problem? apart from the vocalist looking a bit like mr muscle?

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I reviewed this for my uni newspaper. I just didn't get what was so great about Maximo Park either. There are hundreds of bands making this kind of not quite punk-sort-of-rock-indie music, just like there are hundreds of bland metalcore/hardcore/screaming till my lungs fall out core bands. I'm not slagging MP off, just stating how i could not get into this album really. A couple of the songs in the middle were ok though.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Errrrm if you think there are hundreds of bands that sound like Maximo Park out there I suggest you tell us of one or two because they are streets ahead at the moment.

This is clever and incisive indie stuff - they take the Smiths and whip it into something exciting and new with a lyrical slant that sets them apart from most bands.
"Rock with depth and class" said Norman records last week - I quite agree, very succinct.

Plus the CD has a free live CD with it too.
Corking stuff - some of you lot don't know when you are well off.
I still want to knwo who these other bands are though !

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

BTW - Top of The Pops last week?
Absolutely brilliant!!!

They deserve respect for that alone.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

i came home pissed last night to find this in my post.

so hurrah.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I liked Apply Some Pressure a lot and wasn't very impressed with Graffiti. I just heard Acrobat and it's brilliant. I'm fairly undecided.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

I have to say that the Maximo Park album has been the musical highlight of my year...and taking that a little bit further, I would say that 'I Want You To Stay' is an absolute piece of inestimable GENIUS.

When it builds, and builds, and then Smith yelps "You're always my reminder..." and it echoes, echoes, ECHOES around your head with those damn genius organs wibbling away. God, it gets me. Every time.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

This album definately deserves repeated plays. I was really disappointed with it on my first listen, but at the moment it's one that I keep returning to. The songs are great (in a 3 min pop song sort of way), there are loads of energy, and lots of ideas within each song, really well constructed together. It's just quite scary how they can become so popular so quickly.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

"Acrobat" sounds like it is a Tindesticks track rather than Low David Bowie in my humble opinion.

And VERY excellent it is too.
I am up to the fourth listen now and its a terrific CD.

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Okay I am listening to the album now and it is very good, catchy, hooky and energetic. I take back what I said before about not liking Graffiti too. I may buy this album.

As for Acrobat, it reminds me of Just Like Honey more than anything else (musically at least). But I can definitely see the Tindersticks comparison, and also the comparison with REM's Belong, at least in the delivery of the vocals. I almost expect him to start talking about creatures running to the sea. The other thing it reminds me of is Dry Your Eyes, just because of the intense, poignant detail in the verse lyrics. Anyway I love this song :)

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

Acrobat sounds like Pulp and I'm claim my five quid... if someone above hadn't said the same thing.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

the live cd is the best bit, some mad organ in the background which adds to the tracks greatly and hearing a bit of japanese spoken in a north-east accent..

Re: Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

acrobat makes me cringe. good album tho, although i can see them (hopefully) being a singles band a la the buzzcocks...so hopefully theyll release 4 albums with 3 great singles on each, and then il put my hand in my pocket for the singles collection...

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

i like it!

Maximo park's amaaazzzzing new album baby yeh!

omg I love it. I might be blabbing, as their are many comments from me on this page, but I loved the whole thing except acrobat. why is everyone so high on that tune? in my view its pretty crap. but everyone's entitled to their own opinion (yattayatta). i especailly loved 'the night I lost my head'. no one has metioned that song i dont think but its groovy baby.

A certain trigger

Love this album. Only one filler track in the form of Acrobat but even that is bareable if your not desperate to listen to the closer "Kiss You Better."

Maximo

i think that they are really brilliant.."post card of a painting" is one of my faves personally, althoguh yes i have to agree Acrobat is pretty shite, not one of their best.
