Kinesis: You Are Being Lied To

Just over three minutes into this record, Michael Bromley is choking on a mixture of anxiety and regret as he spits out the prophetic riposte, "You are being lied to by those who should protect you." It sounds bitter, it is bitter, but then again, if you were in Kinesis' position, you'd have have every justifiable reason to be.

Five years ago they were being touted by all and sundry as the saviours of British rock, and tours with the likes of Muse and the Manic Street Preachers seemed to only enhance their reputation. But then along came the Strokes and every other band with a "The" prefix in one hand and the entire back catalogue of the Velvet Underground and Chas & Dave in the other and before you know it, redundancy beckoned

As a final epitaph of Kinesis' short-lived legacy, You Are Being Lied To doesn't have the immediate charm and charisma of it's predecessor 'Handshakes For Bullets'. Instead it pays more than a passing nod to those who've inspired the Bolton foursome both before and during their brief passage through the music industry, with 'Everything You Thought You Knew To Be' and 'Rainbow In The Night' casting a brief glance in Matt Bellamy's direction and the fiery 'Principles Are A Luxury' owing more than the odd Corgan-ism to Mellon Collie...-era Smashing Pumpkins.

Nevertheless, Kinesis do leave their own distinctive blueprint throughout, with 'Perception Management' easily rivalling the timeless 'Billboard Beauty' as one of their finest moments, and the penultimate blast of 'A Prayer For Death' finally bringing the curtain down on their agit-rock manifesto.

"Just remember, we are a vacancy" Bromley reminds us and quite frankly, despite the good time ethos of Franz, The Killers et al, the sooner that gap is filled the less complacent the music industry will be.

R.I.P. Kinesis. You will be missed.

Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

"...and they obey" was great, but I wasn't really keen on the other stuff I heard.

It's a shame when a band like this aren't given the chance to grow though.

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

...from what I heard (and it isn't much), and what seems to be happening to bands in the major label set-up, it wasn't so much being given a chance to grow, as the time to follow sign posts in the wrong direction. The stuff they recorded themselves was special because it had a potent urgency, and instead of being allowed to make rough around the edges displays of catharsis, lurching in the direction of the pixies, it all coulda worked out a lot better.
For all the spitting at a glossy world, what happened, it would seem, is that they weren't allowed to be that kind of anti-brand band.
They probably coulda made four albums for what handshakes for bullets cost and been given the time to rise slowly.
If you read this, good luck fellas, I'm sure this ain't the last we'll be hearing of some of you.

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

couldn't agree more Sean - they'll be sorely missed

Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

Never really got into them. I'm quite a big Manics fan, and on the face value, they just look like a kinda-Manics rip off.

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

I really find it hilarious how, for any indie-scene band that expresses overtly political opinions, they're a "Manics ripoff".

I especially love how blinkered Manics fans are when it comes to politicisied bands.

Kinesis sound nothing like the Manics. Open your ears.

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

Yeah I was getting at the point below. Lyrically they are very Manics circa-1990, to the point where I believe they admitted this themselves. Aestetically they do make a new nods to early Manics as well, with the spray paint t-shirt and the general presentation of the album.

I'm not blinkered, just making a point. Don't be so patronising.

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

I seem to remember Kinesis also saying that it's kindof sad that the only reference point in the last 15 years for political bands are the Manics.

It's just a ridiculous assertion to make, especially since the Manics were hardly the most original band in existence.

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

Nope, the Manics aren't free from rip-off claims themselves, and apart from the Holy Bible they aren't the most original band in the world.

I think for everyone that says they are a Manics-ripoff, there's another person to get ridiculously up in arms over it. Its not a 'ridiculous' assertion, its got some value in it. Its hardly calling them an Iron Maiden ripoff. But you go man. Never thought making one point would spark off something..

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

"Never thought making one point would spark off something.."

you've obviously never been here before! welcome!

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

Haha yeah I've noticed. Musical opinions here are shot down like clay pigeons in the country.

Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

Sound-wise there weren't a huge number of similarities, but a lot of Kinesis lyrics wouldn't look out of place on a Generation Terrorists lyrics sheet. See for example This Dead End, Billboard Beauty or Everything Destroys Itself.

Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

The label's site says this is going to be released on the 13th of June...

Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

I dunno about kinesis, there lyrics ;

A) are like a gcse standard manic street preachers.

B) they are laughable, "You are being lied to by those who should protect you."

Whoa man, so profound.

Not convinced.

Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

i agree, and with funky-monkey:

Buy! Buy! Buy!
surely that is against what they are saying

unless you are being sarcastic

Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

Wankers.
Wankers.
Wankers.
Wankers.

Unless you fit in to whatever haircut happens to be cool right now, being in a band isn't easy. My band, Miss Black America, have never fitted in. We've never been cool. We've gone through countless personnel changes and been skint and demoralised. We've never done a tour where we didn't sleep on people's floors. I've just had my umpteenth nervous breakdown in the last 6 years - no joke, we've just cancelled half a tour and loads of other dates 'cause of my unhinged mental state. But MBA keep going, 'cause we believe absolutely in what we're doing. In most people's eyes, I am a loser, a total waster. I'm horribly aware that in most people's eyes, I've failed completely 'cause we had loads and loads of hype when we started and still we sold fuck all records and no-one gave a fuck. But it's like the owner of Bury St Edmunds' only porn shop says every time I take a poster into his shop - you're only a loser when you give up. And I'm really sorry for Kinesis 'cause they're lovely, and they are/were a fantastic live band. But giving up just because it's a bit hard now is fucking pathetic. And they were much, much better than that. Much. Much. Better.

What's the point in trying, I ask myself? Every day, I ask myself - what's the point? What's the point?

And then I imagine my life without my band. And I pick up my guitar and carry on.

I carry on.

I survive.

Re: Kinesis - You Are Being Lied To

Of course this is all your own opinion, but don't you think that Independiente did their fair share in the demise of Kinesis? didn't they just throw the band in at the deep-end without a rubber ring and expect them to tread water? If MBA were ever offered such a contract, would you tell them to sod off?

(This isn't a dig, i'm just curious)
