Chimaira: Chimaira

Just as we experienced the New Wave of British Heavy Metal twenty five years ago, the Americans are undergoing a similar renaissance in their own inimitable style of steel. One of the forerunners of the NWOAHM has been Chimaira, blending the rousing and ferocious sounds of trailblazers such as Pantera’s and Fear Factory with a quite monstrous hardcore element and a previously overbearing electronic aspect. Once the keen purveyors of the mighty coalescing force that is nu-metal, they realised over time that their particular scene had stagnated into a noxious and hackneyed musical dead end.

Chimaira have, as a result, decided to play to their peers no longer and instead have honed their sound and harnessed their evident potential into a totally uncompromising and absolutely killer third album. Where on previous work despite quite recognisable talent, true guitar virtuousity was lacking. Now, we're presented with an album where solos are found oft but sparingly - ‘Save Ourselves’ and ‘Comatose’ especially - and this is a much more versatile and stimulating listen overall. However, this does not detract from the startling intensity and sheer heaviness that gushes through Chimaira. Songs like ‘Inside The Horror’ and ‘Everything You Love’ feature machinegun fire percussion, sludge-filled siren guitars and the kind of vicious, guttural vocals you never want to experience anywhere but at a metal concert.

There was the underlying assumption that after two relatively lacklustre albums where their true promise lay unrealised, Chimaira would remain an enigmatic but brutal live band. This fine eponymous effort may prove to be the definitive moment of their career.

Chimaira - Chimaira

this album should be pretty darn immense ...

the last one wasn't lastlustre at all ... but this one, ooh its been awhile since i got so excited waiting for a metal album to come out

and now i can finally rate the band too ...

Re: Chimaira - Chimaira

it was lacklustre, it really was
this is what they were always capable of
you knew it when you saw them onstage
this is IT

Re: Chimaira - Chimaira

fair enough ... impossibility doesnt come close to the live show (and the first one wasnt much good)

if you can promise me this is as good as the live show then i'll be a happy man in the lead up to monday

Re: Chimaira - Chimaira

it's the closest they've come so far

Re: Chimaira - Chimaira

ok i got it today and i now officially agree with -RAZ- ... its fantastic , only one track that lags behind the others - but its still much better than most of these other hyped up new metal acts

one of the best 3 heavy albums i've heard this year (next to clutch & corrosion of conformity)

Re: Chimaira - Chimaira

This album is absolutely Mind Blowing. Everyone should own it.

Re: Chimaira - Chimaira

truth, brothers
are they actually playing their guitars with handsaws?

Re: Chimaira - Chimaira

methinks they are.

this is an amazing album

reviewer you are stupid. this deserves a 12/10.
