$600....What could I get for $600?
According to the poor man's ebay, buyandsell.com, for this princely sum I could have a sixteen inch fibre glass canoe or an ugly, unwanted Canadian Pug. (God must have been really pissed off when he dreamt up this dog) Or, if i was At The Drive-In, I could have recorded arguably the best album of the their career in a few days at the end of the summer of 96.

Ok, so 'Acrobatic Tenement' might sound like a future development from Chris Morris Housing Enterprises Ltd, but this is possibly the best organised, intelligent chaos since Fugazi's 'Repeater' graced our ears in the early 90's.

'Star Slight' is the perfect one minute punk-pop epic, whilst 0'Ebroglio' is a rediscovered anthem - "It's all a facade! And nothing really matters!".
Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez display a slick and frenzied partnership that makes them the Torville and Dean of the punk-rock scene (with the obvious differences being that they're not ice dancers who were fucking each other- but Omar does wear some pretty tight pants).

'Blue Tag' and 'Skips On The Record' intro like Sonic Youth before they went all art-wank, with the former thundering along like a blistering fireball of white heat and venom, with Cedric growling like a rabid dog. The wailing and screeching and general scuzziness of this record can make the lyrics seem like a diluted soup of letter (or Welsh TV), where a phrase is occasionally audible - "RAAAAAAAGGGHHHHHH sheepskin coats GRRRAAARGGGHHH" - but it's the energy and don't-give-a-fuck raggedness that makes you wish you'd had this when you were 14.

So, the old ghosts of ATD-I were laid to rest, initially to be reincarnated as the god-awful De Facto, who only proved that in the world of musical comebacks, karma can be a real fucker. The remaining spawnings, The Mars Volta and Sparta have a hell of a lot to live up to

At The Drive-In - Acrobatic Tenement

i think "Vaya" is the real classic, its got all the energy of "relationship of command" but with a much more raw feel to it, probably the production or somthing. "Acrobatic Tenament" is cool, but no way the best, and DeFacto arnt god awful just a different genre. The Mars Volta have already bettered Acrobatic Tenament with the three songs theyve released i think.

Re: At The Drive-In - Acrobatic Tenement

i'd probably second that. to me, acrobatic tenement doesn't really have all that much to it. a bit lightweight. it certainly hasn't got that sledgehammer impact that, say Vaya or In/Casino/Out or R.O.C had. a.t. and el gran orgo are more to do with atd-i finding their feet. hey, there's no denying they have great tunes but i certainly don't feel they stand as anything special.

Re: At The Drive-In - Came from outer space

I think that ATDI came from outer space, they sound like they do. The Mars Volta are definitely from space.

Re: At The Drive-In - Came from outer space

yes, i too think acrobatic tenament is not the greatest thing they've done. quite frankly, it does sound like they recorded it for the piddling amount they did. even el gran orgo is better, the songs are a lot better on that one.

AT is a great record. It is quite different to most other stuff we associate with ATD-I. Yeah, they probably were finding their sound. I managed to pick up 'Hell Paso' and 'Alfaro Vive Carajo' about 6/7 years ago and they are in similar vane to AT and they were in '94. Defacto wernt a reincarnation at all. They were a side project and were around in the days of ATD-I. Its obvious which were the real driving force behind ATD-I as Sparta have sorta inherited that sound whereas The Mars Volta are a far cry from the punky rock of ATD-I.

what does that last sentence mean?

sparta are truly awful. tedious indie rock. the mars volta are darn good. interesting, danceworthy, ass-moving RAWK, Y'ALL. Atd-i WERE Cedric, Omar and Paul.

Re: what does that last sentence mean?

Sparta are crap. Jim Ward's voice is in resemblance to that of a road worker.

Re: what does that last sentence mean?

i like both. but i like sparta in an 'mmm, that's quite nice' kinda way, whereas i like the mars volta in a way that makes me really fucking angry when they put on a shit live performance because they're three thousand miles better than that. deloused in the comatorium = album of the year so far.

defacto not bad

I thought de facto were actually quite good. And i'd hardly call it a comeback. I saw them supporting the Get Up Kids and the Anniversary before 'Vaya' was even a flicker in their minds ear. No, good tunes de facto had, and some ace sounding rumblings.

At The Drive-In - Acrobatic Tenement

acrobatic tenement is indeed good, but weak compared to hte beyond almighty Vaya. And why wasn't "Initiation" discussed in the review. its their best song _ "When i told you not to bother to holler/your telephone's the one that helped/you wrapped the chord/around your neck/ you know you're beautiful / when you're dead. also communication drivein is just awesome hardcore. i bet i sound a twatish nerd, but thats what can happen when you really get into a record

At The Drive-In - Acrobatic Tenement

I think this album is definitely up there with the best. Its absolutely phenomenal...just brilliant, raw, delicate songs. Reminds me of the television personalities in that way come to think of it. This is one of the best albums of all time.

At The Drive-In - Acrobatic Tenement

I'll go with the first guy. I think VAYA is their peak and masterpiece. It captures their energy and creative peak. The Mars Volta have descended into over slick self-indulgence, especially the Frances the mutes stuff. Drunkship of Laterns is an amazing track. I found acrobatic tenement too tinnny. The production actually spoils it for me. Maybe, it will grow on me.

I did.

have this when I was 14.

Gutts!

I was so happy.

Aaah.
