Disorientating swirls of breathy vocals encapsulating the cylical slurs of intertwining low bellows, hazy roars tipped with dreamy trills and careful chirps. This album oozes the kind of ethereal ambience that so many bands crave but fail to achieve. Using layer upon layer of fine transparencies to create thick, viscose walls of music that drip and flow, forming around your mind; calming and peaceful.
With all the soothing, uplifting affects of Whale song, 'Loveless' is a beauteous twelve-track voyage to another world hidden somewhere far beneath the depths of the ocean. A world that so many artists have dabbled with, but never quite discovered in such a profound way.
It may be slightly repetitive, some might even accuse it of being bland, but there’s no denying that 'Loveless' is one of the most beautiful, inspiring albums to have ever blessed the 90’s.

love, love, love
but, i prefer isn't anything
i prefer ectsasy and wine
but this is still one of the great albums of all time.
me too,
anything up to 'Soon' are better for me (except the very first album with the original lead singer). It's hard to explain, but beyond the tunes and sound there is certain warmth that moves me so much. i find loveless clinical, like it was made in a laboratory...
I don't agree
Simply because I care about MBV so much. It wasn't just good enough, geared towards a certain critical acclaim, too self conscious.
This is tinned music, full of gimmicks, like no guts....it should have been funded by a charity - but then,I pay tax!
No
Probably only a handful of albums have the guts that Loveless has. Anyone of us would be damn lucky to have even one of this album's "gimmicks" (or do you mean mind-blowing artistry) in our repertoire. The "8" rating is quite ridiculous (a solid 10-do you listen to psychedelic rock, like, ever?), and the guy who commented that the review does not properly convey the edge that this album has is spot-on.
^ agreed.
psychedelic rock?
To me it's an easylistening, just too smooth - I used to play this as an inoffensive background music when I had visitors who weren't particularly into music. :)
But
don't get me wrong, I AM a big fan of mbv. Just heavily disappointed with this album really.
Extremity!
That's it! That's what's missing....
psychedelic rock?
It's ambient isn't it?
Shoegaze..
although i always have a giggle at that term for some reason
A Tip
This was one of the loudest bands (if not the loudest) ever. If you fail to grasp the album's heaviness, you are simply not playing it loud enough. All of the harshness, grandiosity, color, dimension, and shape of this album become readily apparent when it is played at a high volume. Volume was a major part of MBV's aesthetic, and it was key to achieving many of the textures on Loveless. If you treat something as background music, that is what it will be. Show the artists you listen to some respect, and you will always get a lot back.
It also sounds like
a collection of folky songs....the way all the tracks were connected reminded me of Moody Blues too.
