Ok, what would you do if on a summer walk you were encountered with a drunken Charlatan's on a haystack while Gomez tricycle around them with old Mr O'Neill dusting off his harmonica? It probably would bring a smile to your face, but I doubt you'd stay for Mrs O'Neill to organise the barn dancing. This is the point where I should introduce Alfie...

Please don't get me wrong, I would rather have this than Ricky Martin's vocal torso humping the stereo quite brutally, but if people really think this is what good modern music is someone is really taking the piss. From the chiming acoustic guitar that really cuts with its ordinariness, to the Tim Burgess on skunk vocals to the strings straight out of "A Producer's Cliché's - Beginner Issue", You Make No Bones is everything the scene doesn't need. It's not its lack of edge or power - this is folk inspired music after all - but it's so dry. Songs that are good on their simple delectability are very scarce, New Slang by The Shins being a rare example. This song conjures up nothing for me but the thought of some 20something northern lads having a few down the Ploughman's Whistle then saying "Lets go play a song" and wandering to the local barn. It's perfect for a bit of a jam in the back garden but the fact that people are putting faith in a band like Alfie to do great things is the problem. I would blame NME but that would be too easy. In fact, I ask you all to love Alfie and prove me wrong. I just doubt it could ever offer you much more than a quick pint and a game of Aunt Sally.

Alfie - You Make No Bones

I'm surprised at that article about 'You Make No Bones', its perhaps not their best song, but Alfie are a far far better band that that article gives them credit for.

Re: Alfie - You Make No Bones

you reckon? Your be telling me next that starsailor are the greatest thing to happen to punk rock! I was only reviewing the song and not the band...like you say, this isn't their best, so it got a mediocre review. i can't say fairer than that!

Re: Alfie - You Make No Bones

Yes, that first post was rather Moronic, wasn't it?

*titter at die-hard Alfie fans*

Re: Alfie - You Make No Bones

i thort alfie were pretty good live, they were supporting someone or other who i went to see.

Re: Alfie - You Make No Bones

You go to see them do a headline set, and from 3 albums they play 8 or 9 tracks in total. A 45 minute set. And the frontman has little or no charisma. I like them a lot on record, but...urgh...

Alfie, having delivered one of the most audacious albums of the year return with yet another suitably accomplished offering.

'You Make No Bones (revisited)' is, as the title suggests, a re-working of the album track. The difference is not hugely noticeable, but we are gifted a wonderfully melodic lazy acoustic tune, oozing the meandering monotonous vocals of frontman Lee Gorton. Cello and harmonica also comprise to lead this unusual, folksy track to an enchanting climax.

'The Reverse Midas Touch' with it's electro-old skool-Commodore-64-synth riff, collaborates with some soulful swarve musings from guitarist Ian Smith, before developing into a equally soothing and suitably summery track.

'Wormwood', the slower of the three tracks, but not lacking in the now stereotypical hazy Alfie trademark. Muttered vocals, and an enchanting backing track combine for a suitably haunting synth and guitar finale.

All in a day's work for Manchester's own mellow percussionists, Alfie.
