And so post-hardcore-screamo-math-rock noiseniks Funeral For A Friend come stomping back into the public eye with their latest balls-out-rawk EP. And it's rather good. Yes, when the world was fearful that we may get lumped with a bunch of British teary-eyed emo-types, the Welsh quintet showed us their stuff on the stunning 'Between Order And Model' EP - and they've excelled themselves here again. What follows is one of the many recipes for "A Good Rock Record".

You'll need a generous helping of "fuck you" hardcore-isms ('This Year's Most Open Heartbreak'); an anthemic, riff-fuelled energetic number is also a prerequisite ('She Drove Me To Daytime TV'); a nice splatter of almost-emo-with-slower-and-faster-bits ('Kiss And Makeup (All Bets Are Off)'); and of course a plentiful amount of, well, more anthemic melody, the kind that makes you want to raise your blood-spattered fists in celebration ('Escape Artists Never Die'). Once ready, serve to any rock fan you care to choose, and VOILA! - you've got stadium filling quirk-rock.

Funeral For A Friend are the perfect blend of metal and melody, have a singing drummer that's actually rather good, and rock like bastards. Do you need anything else? Nay, I say, nay.

Funeral for a Friend - 4 Ways To Scream Your Name EP

They're not perfect in any way shape or form. Infact, they're just a shambolic rip-off of so many other "emo" bands it offends me how openly they steal. Daylight robbery!

5/5 is WELL over the top.

Sort it out DiS!

Re: Funeral for a Friend - 4 Ways To Scream Your Name EP

Name me one band that hasn't had an influence from somewhere or another - that is to say a band that can never therefore be wholly original.

A great band. Interesting to hear some of their earlier, non-LP work such as "Kiss and Make Up (All Bets Are Off)" and "This Year's Most Open Heartbreak". "Kiss and Make Up" is a great song and is more than good enough for the album, and "This Year's Most Open Heartbreak" starts very heavily, but becomes more normal and contains the usual good guitar parts and vocals. However, for many more great songs, buy the album instead.
