Span: Found

Twisted rowock.

Taking every rock cliché known to man and knocking them into shape for our twisted generation, Span could saw off both your arms at a hundred paces with a tiny flick of their guitars.

An amiable glammy armageddon of early-Aerosmith and AC/DC, ‘Found’ starts in very ‘We Will Rock You’ fashion, but as it twists through its chorus; recalling the deadpan, stoner harmonics of Queens Of The Stone Age, you realise that they’re going somewhere very different indeed. Manically massive guitars, combing out your guts like a sonic cluster bomb combine finely with their eye-impaling hooks.

Do not get too close!

Listening to Span is like watching the London Marathon take place on a stock car racing circuit. It’s not pretty. Like being buggered with a rusty barstool, it's gonna be painful, but fuck us, is it gonna be fun!

Span - Found

Do you actually like this record? You make Span sound like crap. And what's with the pretentious, over use of the English language? You're just trying too hard man.

Re: Span - Found

What overuse of English language?
I hope there are no words you don't understand in this article.
If only for the UK's literacy stats.

Re: Span - Found

Deary me, all going a bit 'crap local zine' in here....

Re: Span - Found

I understand that you write for a crap local zine.

Re: Span - Found

Then you understand wrong - fucko.

Re: Span - Found

Well with a retort like that you certainly can't be writing for The Times.

Re: Span - Found

Oh, I understand it all...its just overused, like:
"An amiable glammy armageddon "
"combing out your guts like a sonic cluster bomb combine finely with their eye-impaling hooks"

That second one doesn't even read right!

Re: Span - Found

Hi Pam,

It's easy to say what you don't like, but what would you prefer? A stale ol' [CENSORED] review that talks more about the cd cover and norweigan hotties in sauna's than the music?

Just curious, as we're constantly trying to develop as a site and collective of writers.

Re: Span - Found

It does read right; there's nothing grammatically inocrrect.

The verb 'cmbine' relates to 'manically massive guitars', hence the agreement is fine.

Anyone familiar with Span and their live shows would know how over the top and hyperbolic they are; and hence the review reflects that in the style of writing.

Whereas a Radiohead or Bjork review would require a more serious, detailed breakdown; Span is all about superlatives. The review doses up a heap of this to put across both the musical exuberance and ultimately the sound of the band.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to go back to how I wrote when I was fifteen just to appease those who miss the point.

Re: Span - Found

Well, I don't think it reads right, and that is my opinion. I am entitled to say what I think.

Also, I have not really heard much of Span, and after reading your review, I don't know if I want to anymore or not. The review is just full of buzz words that show you are not giving a single ounce of care to the record but have just re-written the press release.

Oh, and Sean, I would rather read a stale review about "the cd cover and norweigan hotties in sauna's" than this one. At least in the stale one there is some kind of opinion rather that just record company properganda.

Re: Span - Found

Luckily, there is someone like Gen who makes them sound like I want to give them a good listen.

Take note Mr Future.

Re: Span - Found

errr hooooold up. So you don't like this in a review:

"An amiable glammy armageddon of early-Aerosmith and AC/DC, ‘Found’ starts in very ‘We Will Rock You’ fashion, but as it twists through its chorus; recalling the deadpan, stoner harmonics of Queens Of The Stone Age, you realise that they’re going somewhere very different indeed."

but you do like this as a review:

"it's like an aerosmithsoundgardenrollingstonesacdc mashup"

Writers the world over take note of this - Pam has spoken.
incidentally they say almost exactly the same thing except Gen's version is clearly the superior in lexical verbosity and paragraphical construct.
Sorry Pam, I mean Gen's is written better.

Re: Span - Found

to be fair, mine wasn't a review, it was a brief description.

Re: Span - Found

I get yer point Razzle, but sure a single review should comment on the song as well as summing up what the band sound like?

A bit of narrative doesn't harm anyone, and it's interesting to read.

What would Martin Amis, Will Self, Hunter S Thomspon or Nick Kent read like without a bit of narrative or hyperbolic word juggling?

If all DiS wants to be is a second rate webzine with no higher ideals that to provide box desriptions for those incapable to digesting long words or one line reviews then fine, but I was under different impressions.

Re: Span - Found

I get a different impression to.

Pam, care to write us an alternative review? sentence? 2 words?

Re: Span - Found

<>

Um no not really...I am the reader...I read...I write, but not about music.

Re: Span - Found

and to also be fair, Gen's other review's always give me a clear idea of what a band are like. This however wasn't present in Andrew's review of Span.

End

(PS: Gees, you think someone would be able to take criticism)

Re: Span - Found

It's not that I can't take criticism, it's just that you contradict yourself so blatantly, it's funny. You say that I don't describe what the band are like.

Gen's one line 'aereosmith meets stones' is what I said. Except where that was a one line summary, I mixed that in with a bit of fillage about the record.

So your argument is basically: this doesn't describe the band, but something (shorter) which makes some of the same points, you reckon does. Dumb.

Re: Span - Found

y'missed out soundgarden ;)

veryveryvery important to get soundgarden in there. yes.

Re: Span - Found

you may recall that i did actually say that yours didn't read right...i couldn't understand the point you were getting across. With Gen's one liner, I could.

Re: Span - Found

fuck it, it was clear enough to me
described the band well with approving enthusiasm
and you don't like words in reviews other than 'good' or 'bad' it seems
whatever

Re: Span - Found

"and you don't like words in reviews other than 'good' or 'bad' it seems "

how do you know what I like?

well, if the review was clear enough to you, thats ok then isn't it.

Re: Span - Found

Is one review of a band you've not really heard (yet read gen's reviews of) really worth all this fuss? i c'mon, by now you coulda walked to the shops and bought the record!

Re: Span - Found

Cos u blatantly said that a review describing the record using interesting language was too complicated for you.

Re: Span - Found

I did not you fool...when did I say it was too complicated for me?

If you look back over this comment board you will see that I never once said it was too complicated for me, nor did I say it used interesting language.

I am bored of this and find it pathetic that I can't voice an opinion without being told that I am wrong and saying things that I'm not actually saying.

Sad.

Re: Span - Found

No, what's sad is people who go on these msg boards to do nothing but criticise, offering no positive thoughts and with little other purpose than to try and score points off the writers.

What's funny is often these people have no grasp of what is actually 'good' and show themselves up by highlighting mistakes that aren't there and then admitting that their complaints are groundless anyway.

And 'properganda' is spelt 'propaganda'.

Good day.

A

Re: Span - Found

Actually, this is the first time I have commented on any review and I have been reading DIS for years now. I have always found the writing pretty good on here...until now.

And you can't tell me that I don't know what 'good' is because you are bias and will think that your article is fine. I am un-bias (kinda) so my thoughts count. And they are not groundless complaints...it was a strange article to me, get over it.

Re: Span - Found

Fair enough.

Anyone with any actual knowledge of what grammar and a review are got a problem with it?

Re: Span - Found

Describe the music though in simple terms, not like record company properganda (sic).

Who are AC/DC?

Re: Span - Found

they're a band. you may have heard of them.
