R.E.M.: Bad Day

An impressive 17 years in the making, ‘Bad Day’ proves that REM can still cut it in the world of brilliant pop singles.

Admittedly, it steals much from ‘It’s The End Of The World As We Know It…’ but that’s not exactly a bad thing, is it? Plus, anything that makes you want to dance elbows-in-the-air ala Stipey (which it does to me) gets our vote.

While the albums might have taken a drop in quality, songs like this, ‘The Great Beyond’ and even ‘Imitation Of Life’ prove that the boys from Athens, GA are still king of the 7”, but it’d be nice to occasionally see a bit more of the dark stuff.

Rip-off

"it steals much from ‘It’s The End Of The World As We Know It…’"

Steals pretty much everything more like. Mood, lyrical themes/content, chord patterns, style... perhaps their most un-original song as yet. However, they pull it off in my book because of their status and history, the cracking video (CNN/Sky satire, unique new uses of bullet-time photography and Canary Wharf backdrops), and because their self-rip-off is of one of their most classic of anthems.

Re: Rip-off

theyve got so many songs now that we cant really blame them if they accidentally make the same one again.

Re: Rip-off

err, well if you knew anything you'd know that "Bad Day" is indeed an early version of "It's the End...", scrapped and later resurrected and bastardised into the latter!

The reasons behind re-recording "Bad Day" is a mystery, but I can't help but feel it has something to do with their greatest hits album...... mate....
