With south London five-piece Art Brut's glowing endorsements in the 'cool' mags, and their clothing sponsorship deal, inevitably there are people out there who hate this band already. Admittedly there's something very convenient about these art-rock newbies.

However, 'Formed A Band' barks its self-explanatory mission statement with an infectious sense of exhilaration and authenticity that grows as the song progresses. Think a blunter Bloc Party, a fizzier incarnation of The Fall, all shouty, chin-in-the-air vocals and spazzy but unfussy guitars. The overriding effect of is a genuine sense of excitement, defiance and energy thrusting them forward. And if it's all just posturing, they at least know how to put on a show. Either way, they're intriguing. It won't change the world but it'll set the night alight.

Art Brut - Formed A Band

This song is very, very, very fucking annoying.

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

Hey, imagine playing it over and over again like I have to (I'm the guitarist in the band)...

Keep your ears peeled, we are a band with more than one song :-)

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

You should've made the b-side the lead track, at least it's good, "Formed A Band" is just averagely tedious stuff that one neat nagging guitar riff can't save on its own, especially by the 2nd minute. With the lyrics sending me asleep by then as well. Which is a pain, it sounded like I'd love it from all I'd heard about it beforehand. Can't trust everything that you read though i guess. Maybe my tedium threshold's dropped again, I'll wait for the next single..

Art Brut - Formed A Band

I should hope so.

Art Brut - Formed A Band

Fuck off I think its class!!!!!
Keep up the good work!!!

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

i am liking it more and more, the more i listen to it.

Art Brut - Formed A Band

What a pile of wank, why doesn't the NME change its name to smash hits. These guys are Busted for Grown-Ups with Nothing at all wortwhile to say, what pretentious fucks, 'I wish I was the boy, the man that writes the son that make palestine get along', you're offensive arrogant twats. If I ever see you i'll smack you. Your everything thats wrong with the mainstream 'alternative' scene.

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

Haha, I love it when people say stuff like this. You think we're Pop stars! Have you met us, just because we've got lucky doesn't make us and less hard-working or honest...

OK, we though that some people may find that lyric offensive, but it's purely a statement of intent, why couldn't a song make people all get along, it's not offensive, it's supposed to be positive and look on the bright side of a bitter and nasty world.

Finally, we've only ever done what we do, if the 'mainstream' alternative scene has finally decided to catch up then that's up to them, but don't pass judgement until you've heard more than one song and at least let a group of hardworking, honest and unpretentious individuals defend themselves, try actually talking to one of us or people that know us...

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

I thought you'd take the bait. I used to go to art college aswell, you know, I like to get my teeth into a debate.
I take your point about judging you after one track, it's partly the press surrounding the track that pisses me off aswell, yeh it is a simple (fucking annoyingly) catchy song and that is all, nothing earth shattering.
Secondly, music always brings people together (in the words of the great wise Madonna) , I think it is the most instant and powerful form of expression you can get (second to sex and violence, obviously), just think of band aid, all those celebrity get togethers, eh. Maybe one day you'll be asked to do one. The reason that line in particular annoyed me was because the line is so throw away and pointless within the context of the song, it is just verbatim. Why not say ' I wish I could write a song with something worth singing about in' or ' I wish I could write a song that would help the elderly across the street' or even sing about the details of the problems on the west bank a la rage against the machine, the fall, Public Image ltd, Public Enemy, RATM Etc, and do something to help, not just give a slightly capricious soundbyte?. Who doesn't want conflict to stop?
Anyway, how are you guys being marketed, is it all simply nice uncynical band playing and enjoying the act of that; or is that just your press release.
I know Nick and Alex from Franz Ferdinand and I know that 'official' bootlegs were secretly released before the second single as a bit of a guerilla marketing exercise, and i'm sure that is partly the reason they got so much press over the 2nd single.
I hope that you are a group of hardworking, honest and unpretentious individuals, then you won't piss me off so much and I may actually like you. I just hate the way the music press is so tabloidy these days, always trying to create the next big thing and sway opinion.
Anyway best of luck to you, prove me wrong, I dare you, and then there might be more decent stuff on daytime radio. Take it easy.

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

I'm assuming you're a member of Art Brut.....in which case :-

1) The general music in "Formed A Band" is GOOD
2) I'm sure your other stuff might be good

BUT

Get rid of that bloke who talks his way through that song. From my point of view, the guy saying "this is my normal singing voice; it's not irony and it's not rock 'n' roll" (or words to that effect), he may be right, but it's certainly downright pretentious!!

That guy basically sounds like a more annoying Mike Skinner (i.e Streets). Get rid of him.....and the pretentious lyrics......and you'll have a good band.

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

i heard the Brut were making a song called 'Top Of The Pops' - is it a cover of the Rezillos?

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

if the rezillos song goes

ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!
ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!
ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!
ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!
ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!
ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!
ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!
ART BRUT - TOP OF THE POPS!

all the way through, then yes.

otherwise, no.

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

ahhhhhhhh, so it's a song......thought u were just saying it purely to annoy me......which you probably are :-)

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

that'll be a no, then.

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

What a pile of wank, why doesn't pumpkinagherkin change their name to dickhead. You are an angry person with nothing at all wortwhile to say, what a pretentious fuck, 'I used to go to art college aswell, you know' and 'I think it is the most instant and powerful form of expression you can get (second to sex and violence, obviously)', you are an offensive arrogant twat. If I ever see you, i'd ignore you. You're everything that's wrong with the 'mainstream' 'alternative' scene.

i don't really care, just making a point, if only to myself. and i doubt that there was any intentional 'bait' cast out. Who the hell is to say what a band should do differently? unless they respect their guidance.

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

I thought this was a place where you state your opinion on bands. I made the post because I personally found the track so annoying that I felt the need to write, and see what other people thought. If I was pretentious surely i'd write 'Music is the most instant and powerful form of expression you can get (second to sex and violence, obviously)' without bothering with the 'I think' on the front. Sorry that i'm passionate about things.
I do have plenty of positive things to say about other bands and music out there, I love a lot from Cannonball Adderley to Kid 606 to Jim O'Rourke to RamEllZee. Just not this song by these guys. Why bother listening to mediocre music when there's so much stuff out there to blow you away?
Clever though, the way you deconstruct my points and turn them back on me, like you know me. Saves you having to think of your own opinion, anyway, I wasn't aware I had anything to do with the mainstream alternative scene. Have fun

Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band

i certainly wasn't making the point that negative opinions shouldn't be put on a board like this. i wasn't even really defending the single, i just thought that those couple of pretty strong insults that you directed at them were unnecessary, and would have preferred to have read a posting that expressed your opinion, without 'going out of your way' to be offensive, thats all. which made you sound abit more like a bitter old music journalist, than someone that is clearly passionate and knows what they're talking about. But who am i to tell people what they can and can't do?, not a hypocrite nor a prude.
and i didn't really see my reworking of your post as clever, it was just easier, and a simple way of making my simple point.

Any song that has the line:

"I want to be the boy, the man, who wrotes the song that makes Israel and Palestine get along"

Is okay by me

err, I never went to art college...

I just get irritated when people who don't know you make vast assumptions about you.

Very good fuckin' single. The video for 'Formed A Band' isn't great though. Personally I prefer 'Modern Art' as a song, it has a really catchy riff. Good stuff all round though.

Art Brut - Formed A Band

Don't let all your judgements about Art Brut be derived from listening to one or two tracks - go see them live. Saw them in York at Fibbers. They are unbelievable. Energy? I have not felt this way about a band since...Wire...The Fall...Teenage Fanclub (what?). Yes, that is his singing voice, it's not irony... but it is popular culture... it rox. Art Brut – Top of the Pops, The Chalets – Top of the Pops..
