Franz Ferdinand: Matinée

Witnessing their astonishing ascent into mainstream adulation, there's an unmistakable feeling that, with their David Byrne posturing and a handful of Blondie riffs, Franz Ferdinand got lucky; that they were the art-school chancers in the right place at the right time.
And maybe that's true, but - to coin football pundit cliché - you make your own luck, and these guys have lived up to everything we so desperately wanted them to be.
With the brutish intro, the beguiling verse, the finger-clicking middle eight and the strutting chorus all recalling the gear-changes of Bowie's title-track on 'Station to Station', 'Matinée' is easily their most ambitious work to date.
Sparkling with Wildean wit, it's also the most lyrically engaging song on the LP. Triumphantly droll, incisively arch and riddled with a self-deprecating charm, Alex Kapranos proves that - like early Moz - he can be oh-so clever while still maintaining empathy with the listener.
Lucky? Lucky us!

Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
I love this, best on the album.
why did they change it from 'The Dark of the Matinée' to just 'Matinée' -
Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
What a song! Does anyone know the midweek chart placing? I reckon it should go top 3 at least.-
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
It's not released for another 3 days...-
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
Ah, got mixed up. thanks.

Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
Are you listening to the same record as me? True the other two singles were fantastic but am I the only one who finds the album distinctly average? This isn't a terrible song but the chorus is crap.-
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
hmmm... im going to have to disagree with you on this i think its a great album but the songs they have released have been kinda over played which has kinda killed them a bit im really feeling michael at the moment -
Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
The song is a good song and is insanely catchy BUT you can't compare alex kapranos to Morrissey in any way-
Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
this song rocks, all thanks to the words
" Terry Wogan" -
Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
It's all a bit affected for me, I'm afraid. It's not that I dislike them at all - some of their tunes are okay - but I can't quite see why the "Saviours of British Music" plaudits are being rolled out for them.
And surely they should be docked at least a star just for the production? It's horrible... -
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
It won't though. Cos its been released after the album. Top 10 hopefully.-
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
somewhere about ten would be my guess as well. between ten and twentty i'd think. although im not sure what else is out...-
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
I'd say top 5. Since they've already had such a big hit with Take Me Out, its now become 'cool' to like them. People will buy anything they think is cool.-
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
hah! i sneer at your antiquated ideas of cool. i shun all things you hipsters describe as such. Like soap. and food. -
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
yes. Alex Kapranos doesn't sing in a way that makes me want to punch my ears out. -
Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
not mindblowingly spectacular - but more flesh on the bone than the average "new big thing" hitting the streets these days -
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
I totally and completely agree...the new strokes in my opinion...over-hyped, over-rated and nothing more than average :) -
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
yeah, you're right. it's become "uncool" to like them. therefore it's cool again. it was just for a whjle in february you couldnt admit it...
We'll say you win on the chart prediction front. although i might have had ground for saying a draw if i hadnt put the ten to twenty bit in.-
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
Actually, i think it's a return to form. i like it much better than take me out, not as much as darts of pleasure.
Just shows how much i know...
(i would do one of those rolling eye smileys to myself here) -
Re: Franz Ferdinand - Matinée
franz ferdinand were never cool. they were good for a minute, then i heard their songs for the hundredth time without actually owning any of it, therefor they are now just shit.
